I don’t know of such a camp (except the one someone posted the other day) but I worked at a camp in Michigan, Circle Pines Center that, because of its small size and emphasis on social justice, brought in a lot of kids with issues such as ADHD, autism, and anybody else who just doesn’t “fit in” in the “real world.” Most of the kids are neurotypical but are very understanding. Plus, the counselors are on top of everything and are well aware of such issues.

The website is www.circlepinescenter.org

Hi ,

I don't know how "in depth" this camp would be as far as "living skills", but my son at 13 went to a weekend camp through Easter Seals. It was a specific "Aspergers camp".

They also provided a couple of week-long camps, as well.

We're in Wisconsin, but Easter Seals is everywhere, I'm sure.

Good Luck.

Another idea may be to check out your counties Social Services. We have an "Aging and Disablility Center within Social Services as well as an independent, non-profit ARC.

Check for any private schools for AS in your area. Sometimes they have a summer

program that does all of those things (and you may be able to get your school

district to pick up the tab).

My Son went to Summit Camp in PA. He had a great time. Not academic based, but

they have a wonderful staff and great staff/camper ratio.

Yeah, now I know where it is. We've gone through it when heading up north!!!

First, and foremost....OF COURSE I'm a Packer fan!! he he. And,,,,it IS the worst thing to NOT be one. he he.

I'd love to get together some time. Oshkosh would be a great place. Right in the middle!!!

I know of just a couple gals in Osh, but LOVE going up to Appleton. Man, the shopping is insane there!!!!

Lunch would be great and beer would be great too. Ha!!! Or.....lunch with a beer. Sorry - that was bad.

How many kids do you have? Ages? I was just thinking - we should take our chat off the group site. I'm sure others are thinking that, too. he he.

Overview

The Asperger's Summer Program creates an environment to develop peer relationships, gain "social capital", and learn new social skills. For the past 7 years, we have been providing our Summer Program to dozens of children and adolescents with Asperger’s Syndrome, PDD-NOS, and High Communicating Autism.

Answers to common questions

The Summer Program is a combination therapeutic and recreational environment.

Participants may sign-up for either a 4-week or 8-week session.

We meet 6 hours per day.

Participants may sign-up for 3 or 5 days a week.

The days of the week the participants meet are pre-set.

We pro-rate for prearranged time off (e.g. family vacation).

Ages range from 6 to 22 years old, and participants are divided into age groups.

We go on outings every Wednesday to everywhere from the museum to Six Flags.

We have 1 staff member for every 3 kids.

Staff members are Masters, Bachelors, and college level.

The Program Directors, Tim Kabara, Ed.S and Kara Felsman, MA spend the full day with the participants at least 3 days a week.

Insurance will typically fund at least a portion of the program.

The program is coverable through The Autism County Waiver.

We do not offer transportation to and from the site. However, we recommend Let it Ride Transport to those with transportation needs. Their phone number is 414-350-3088.

We offer child-care before and after the program.

Partial scholarships may be available for those who self-pay, or have lack of insurance coverage.

Yes, there is an emphasis on fun. Although we target many skills, we also have water balloon fights, go to the beach, have a talent show, and play lots of games.

Bottom line, Bears have been great allllll season. Packers have kept getting better each week. Sigh..........

Meaghan,

Our house is crazy, too. Hubby is a Packer fan but loves to cheer for the Bears since that's where he's from.

2 of my kids adore the Patriots. My 2 gals love the Packers, like they SHOULD.

I tell everyone that if they can't shut their pie-holes during the game, then out they go.

My hubby and I joke that we're not sure if our marriage is strong enough to weather a "mixed" marriage (Die-hard Packer fan and So-So Packer fan).

I guess football can get people a little freaky.

As far as chatting about the game on Sunday.....I hope I'll be chatting and not crying. hehe

Yeah, we talk trash.....big time. Course, what's worse to me is that, honestly,,,,he likes the Packers.....cause he never really got into the Bears when he lived down there. But,,,,,,,,to the untrained person (him), he thinks it's funny to make comments about the Packers. Bad move. he he.

Yes, he went to Iraq and got back 2 years ago. We were both in Saudi in 1991, too. We met and got married right before we went over...he he. and we call our time spent separately over there our "Honeymoon". he he.Any plans for being sent back over? I guess that was a dorky question. Can't say it, if it's for sure and as long as stuff is going on over there, of COURSE there are plans. Duh.

My computer wouldn't load very fast, so I have to watch your youtube vid again, but what was the occasion for him at the football game?

My husband has been deployed four times, twice to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan. Each time for a year, except the last one where he was sent back early for a heart condition that needed surgery.

Technically he was suppose to deploy last August and would be gone right now. But our older son got hit by an IED in Afghanistan right about the time my husband was suppose to leave and then with all the problems with my son's school and our son becoming suicidal they allowed him to stay back this time. They figured there was only so much they could expect us to handle at one time I guess.

They are talking about giving them two years between deployments now, so if that happens then he shouldn't have to go back until 2013. I hope it's never!

What was it like in Saudi? How long did you have to stay there?

My husband was trying to get tickets to a Bears game for one of his soldiers back in November. He never heard anything back until a few weeks ago when he was asked to be a representative of the 101st Airborne Division for the 3rd Qtr Salute to the Troops during the game . He of course agreed, being a die hard Bears fan. He just wanted to go to the game. LOL! Definitely a once in a life time experience.

Darned right, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!!! How wonderful!!!FIrst,,,,,,your son was hit. My heart goes out to you. How is he? Dear God. Husband over and son over. Hugs and admiration to you. My oldest is only 14, so I'm not there yet. The conflict of being so incredibly proud and yet, so scared. Hugs, again.

I'm sooo sorry about your son being suicidal. Is he still? On meds? What did you do? Still struggling?

Yes, hopefully he won't go over again. I konw that the rotations go by jobs, but darn, it should be more "equal". Not that I want to go over more. BUt,,,,when ya hear about situations like your hubby.......that's just tooooo much.

We have a cousin, as well, that's on his 4th tour over there. Sigh.
