Guest guest
One thing to remember with e-schools is that the kids are in real live classes with real teachers and real classmates. There is interaction going on but of course, it's not face to face. Some of my ds's teachers use their web cams so you do see them live while they are teaching. But the one we are using has a forum that includes a chat section. Those kids can type faster than you can imagine as they chat through the class. The teacher can control whether it's on or not to keep the kids on topic. For example (a little brag moment for me!) my ds was in History the other day online and they were playing a game to study for their test. My ds did great and answered a lot of the questions. He had peers cheering him on the whole time (boys against girls). So it was a good experience for him. We ended up doing MN Virtual Academy. I think I've heard that MNVA pushes kids even more than Connections. I don't really like the push, push, push. But, I do like the home atmosphere and the idea that you work when you work and don't have "homework" (even though it's literally all homework). So, Connections may be the way to go. I will look into it some more. I have another issue with this: My other son has begged to do homeschool at times. We don't think it's the best fit for him, though. He is 10 and has Bipolar. He thrives on social interaction and even though he doesn't have any friends at school, he likes the classroom social atmosphere and has a good relationship with his teacher. So, there may be some jealousy, as there always is, if we decide to do online school for B (12) for 7th grade this coming year. Jealousy for my son with BP can mean aggression and property destruction. Guest guest
This year we decided to try Connections Academy. Both of my boys absolutely love it. They intereact on a regular basis with teachers and students. They are invovled in clubs and activities to increase this interaction. To get the additional social experiences they need to have we joined the local YMCA. Guest guest
Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online. Where is the teaching in that? If you would do that, why not call it homeschooling vs. e-schooling. I guess because someone else is grading your work? I'd take the extra time to find an e-school with live teaching if that is what is important to you. I haven't seen the other kind. Some may be "live" with direct teaching in real time. Others are simply assignments being e-mailed back and forth. Guest guest
We did the "other kind" where everything was on our own. Once every couple of weeks per subject there would be a mandatory "meeting on line" with other kids and the teacher. But,,,,a teacher was always available for help, if needed.I loved it because it allowed him to move at his own pace. Quickly with some of the subjects and then with others, like Composition and things with writing, we got help and moved slower. He finished 6th grade Science my mid-January cause once he got started, he got on a roll. I, personally, would like having the actual classes, cause man, sometimes, I really struggled with helping him, but it wasn't available here. Robin "Normal is just a cycle on a washing machine....." Guest guest
I can imagine that would be hard to do! We do the kind where you have regular classes and teachers each week. we do work at our pace within limits. Most teachers let the kids have a week after the due date to turn in assignments. So we usually have time to slow down on some things, speed up on others. That is what I have liked. When we started in mid-year, my ds was struggling with math (he is very advanced in math, so it was puzzling...) and so I started him back at day one in the math book and he finished it in 2 months. It would have been sooner but I made him go slower than he wanted to go. They were all great letting us work this out and we figured out what was wrong and moved on. I guess what matters most is to have people who can work with you to adjust things as needed.
