Hi,

I am a bad speller too. English is my second language. I went to college for four years and still my spelling did not improve, as other problems with grammar.

I had a c in English, I had better grade in other subjects so I manage to graduate with a good GPA.

I work with Computers, it does not require to write well in English, but this problem has limited me for promotion.

You are doing a great job if you are going to graduate classes in spite of your limitation.

Do not be so hard on yourself, I think that English is the hardest language in the world, a C is a good grade, unless you want to be an English teacher..

Might offer you more independence in this and similar classes. Also, is there something wrong with getting a C? If all your other grades are fairly high, one C probably won't kill your GPA or anything. Now I totally get it, as I was once a complete perfectionist, motherhood has cured me of that. So I look at my syllabus and I can't have family friends whoever proofread it (though I can submit it to a company at 20 bucks a pop, which while I could afford it I certainly don't want to if for no other reason then for my principles). So I have no clue what I am going to do in regards to this class... I am sooooooo tempted to drop it right now because I know I will have a really hard time passing it (nothing but pedistrian language and writing operations can be used). The problem is this class is given special attention along with 7 others for my application to a program I am interested in. I want to get at least all Bs on the classes that count for this.

Online course though the local community college consortium so no classes and no real professor (she exists but is over 100 miles away) though I have emailed her asking her for some advice. I still have a problem with her making me get assignments proofread though a paid service or not at all.

Is it a straight "composition" class? Go up to the instructor on the first day (if you can), talk to them, ask them if they have any suggestions and/or if they can recommend a tutor. Have the tutor proofread and work with you on writing. Sit in the center of the front row and pay attention every day. IMHO, it is pretty rare for a professor to give a bad grade to a student they see is giving a good effort every day. It does sound like she may be padding her pockets by requiring all students to use the same laundry service. There is a tutor she won't object to and it may not cost you anything; a tape recorder. As you complete the pages, read them aloud into a tape recorder. THen listen to them for clarity and grammatical errors. Sometimes just being able to hear what you wrote can make a big difference.

Her exact words are, "Students may use the www.smarthinking.com weblink for peer editing throughout the course. Now if I had to pay 20 dollars to a tutor to proof my assignment, I would have no problem with it. But to give 20 dollars a paper to some business that no doubt paid her to make this rule... that goes against my principles.
