Can you write for him?  My son just can't do it when he also has to actually physically write, even a short sentence or 2, but when we act as scribe, he's pretty much fine.  He's still not nearly as strong in writing (or dictating in this case) as he is in just about everything else academic, but he will actually do the work without a meltdown.  The school has no problem with us writing his homework.  I hope the teacher sees by the silly things he sometimes " writes " that it's really him doing it!  It makes a HUGE difference with us.  Sometimes he will write, for ex., the 1st few spelling sentences and then we do the rest.  I like that because then he is practicing the thinking/writing process.  I don't push him tho because it is sure to cause a meltdown.  He's decent enough when he wants to write something, like a silly note to his sister or something.

Anyway, my understanding is that, yes, it's a quite common Aspie problem.HTH, E.V.On Wed, Jan 12, 2011 at 10:13 PM, judes11111 <wnjfabian@...> wrote:

Judy,

My son too has written expression problems. On his last assessment he scored in the 9th percentile. But the school is too focused on his behaviors to focus on any academics. I am still fighting this issue.

If your son has problems with written expression he might benefit from assistive technology to help him, like a word processor. This way he can focus more on the content of what he is writing. ne

Our son is about the same age as yours and in 4th grade. He has a TERRIBLE time with writing! They have started to "track" his writing per day after they added writing as one of his goals on his IEP. We just got his report card today. It says that he has only been writing 18 words per day!! He hates to write! It causes meltdowns here and at school. They write for him sometimes and we do too. He has worked for years with the school OT on writing, but he still doesn't want to write. He can have fairly decent handwriting for his age at times, but he has to be having a REALLY good day. Otherwise, his papers usually have things scribbled out, large print, slanting letters, etc.

The only thing that I can think of to help is that the school gave us a copy of "Dragon Speaks". It's a computer program where your child can dictate what to write and the computer will write it for him. We have not actually used it because the school didn't really tell us what to use it for (and we're a bit slow around here). But, they say that it's a really good program to use with AS kids. Good luck!!

My son has the same problem. He can't seem to figure out where to start with his

assignments. Open-ended writing assignments are frustrating. But once he gets

started, he is OK. Every once in awhile I will scribe for him. If I do that he

is able to get the " creative juices flowing " and I have a hard time keeping up

with his spoken word. After that I have him type up what I scribed for him on

the computer. He was also provided an AlphaSmart by the school. It is a keyboard

device that he uses to write his notes in school.

I keep looking at the DragonSpeak speech recognition software. It will type what

you say into the computer. I think this will help since he can just say what is

on his mind and then go back and edit the story later on the computer.

We went through the same struggle with my son. Answering open ended questions

was the worse. It took many years and a lot of focus but his writing is now on

the same level as his peers. He is in 10th grade. Writing is still hard for him

but he can do it on his own.

Starting in 4th grade, the school used graphic organizers with all kids. They

just kept using them with my son until he was comfortable writing without them

(sometime in 7th or 8th grade). We had it stated on his IEP that he was allowed

to have less writing output than his peers and extra time if needed. My son was

allowed a scribe for long writing assignments as he has dsygraphia which makes

it difficult for him to physically write. We used to have to sit and work with

him on any of his writing assignments. We found it was best if the teacher

stated the minimum requirements that she wanted from him. Otherwise my son would

try to get away with as little as possible. My son still receives tutoring in

school to work on improving his skills in an effort to make writing less of a

struggle for him. He is finally at the point of writing on his own and editing

his own work. The editing was a big step. He's probably written on his own since

late in 8th grade but it was a gradual process with him needing less help over

the years. We still have the writing accomodation in his IEP but it has been

needed since he started high school. It took 5 years to get my son's writing

level to that of his peers. It wasn't easy to get to this point.

My advice would be to have the school provide extra help for you son in writing

and allow him extra time on assignments if needed (both details should go into

his IEP.) A formal writing program would be best. My son's school used a

combination of programs to help him but it was similar to the Landmark program.

Hello there, I can totally relate, even though Dylan is 7, we are starting to write book reports. He reads the stories (very slowly, not a good reader), then he has to come up on his own what the book is about, write a topic sentence, what happened beginning, middle, end, and a conclusion. I see the future for Dylan and it's scary. He CANNOT put his thougts on paper. Well first of all you need the thoughts. He doesn't understand what he read. He has meltdowns too and a lot of anxiety regarding homework in general. It takes us hours to do a 20 min. project. Don't feel alone.

For my son, I try to organize the assignment in chunks: introduction, body and conclusion. I may also give him the start of the sentence: "In the beginning...", "After that...", "On the other hand...", "At the same time...". Asking him questions after he read a text, I can see he has all the answers - they are all in his head. It's the thinking process to put them down together that kills him. Then I just give him some hints to get him going.

Would it help if he had those small sticky paper. (flagging) when he is reading he can stick them where there is something interesting he needs to remember or important information that he needs to know. when he's finished reading - all he has to do is go back to the sticky paper for a reference to help refresh his memory.

as you flag - (sticky paper) - jot a little something on that paper to help remember about that part he just read. when finished - that's when you go back to all those flagged notes (sticky paper) to refresh your memory.

hope this helps

That is just what was done with my daughter who has AS, ADHD, and dyslexia, dysgraphia.. Just one extra day to turn it in. Forced her into meltdowns and she ended up in a separate day school where she does little work, but she will go to school and she is not terrified. It is sad. You might need to work on "what is a fact, what is an opinion" with him as a goal (in speech therapy? as a writing goal in the IEP? both?) This was a big problem for us with our oldest ds. I remember trying to talk him into applying for a job at a gamer store. I figured he would blend in more there and he knew his games. Well, he could not do that because he could not have answered questions like, "Is this a good game?" lol. I tried to practice some of the things he would be doing with him but right off the bat, that glaring problem came to light.
