There a ton of private schools (and maybe a few public schools) in the bay area of of Cali. I also have a friend slightly over your sons age that goes to one in the Dallas Ft. Worth area. I am not sure however about public schools in your area though I do know there is a couple of them in some bigger cities. The problem I have generally noticed with public schools though is there is not real assurance your kid will get in, most go on the basis of lottery, so who knows. If you can give me more details I can offer you more advice if you want, I am an expert googler! lol

Hi.I am the mother of a 13 year old boy with Aspergers. We currently live in PA and may be making a move in the future. My son is miserable at his middle school. I was wondering if anyone knew of a private school for children with Aspergers's. Also, does anyone knows of any public school district anywhere in the U.S. that had a good program?

Hi, I think when researching this keep in mind there are some

" money maker " schools out there, and definitely investigate. There

is a college for asperger's here in Melbourne FL that is hugely high in tuition

but around here doesn't have that great a reputation. When I've investigated

sometimes I've been surprised at what I find online as far as other people's

neg. experiences, especially as they are usually " for profit " schools. Public

schools? Hah. I just tried

to stay VERY involved even into highschool years. I found teachers

more receptive to email than notes/verbal meetings. LJ

One more thought.

Yes I have also heard good things about

Bay Area special ed schools….one in San comes to mind in particular

We are very impressed with the Elk Grove

School district ( South

of Sacramento in Northern Ca) and have not had to fight for services at all….very

accommodating and responsive. I am not sure if that extends to high school as

we are only involved in head start and elementary campuses

Ulster County in New York has an Aspergers program at their Alternative

Education site at BOCES in Port Ewen. The program is called the APIE program.

Paradiz, author of Elija's Cup was involved with the original program

called the Aspie program in the Onteora High School. Woodstock NY is included in

the Onteora district. But you could live anywhere in Ulster County and be

referred to the APIE program. I moved here to get my daughter in the program and

we are seeing some success. She's been in so many placements and says this is

the best one ever. Other towns that are interesting in Ulster County are New

Paltz and Saugerties (voted one of the top ten coolest small towns in Budget

Magazine. Ulster County is nestled in the Catskills on the Hudson Valley. This

area is rich in art history, with the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt mansions near by

in a neighboring county. This area celebrates the harvest in any way you can

imagine. Apple Festivals, a Garlic Fest, Pumpkin picking in the fall, plentiful

farmers markets and a wide variety of low or no cost family functions abound.

Worth looking into. All the best, Betsy

I should try to find a job there, the school district in my area is very bad...

I eventually will sell my house and move a place where my girl can have the services she needs. She is going to middle school now, I am thinking if I can stay in the class with her for two days to look the enviroment and makes her fell confident. ( ) Any schools specializing in Aspergers? Sadly, there is generally strength in numbers. Reading many of the posts over

the years it seems as if you are in an isolated area where there are few cases

of ASD, the support you get may be lacking. But, if you are in an area that has

a high occurrence of children on the ASD, you may find school administrators

more willing to work with you.

I live in the Mercer county area of NJ and this seems to be a " hotspot " for

autism. Because of that there are many schools and programs in the area that

specialize in teaching children and adults on the spectrum. These would be both

private and public. For example, the Mercer County School for Special Education

(public) was a wonderful resource for early intervention and the early years of

my son's education (up to pre-K). As he entered the grade school he was moved

back into district because of budget concerns. There were probably 8~12 kids his

age from our town being sent out to the county school. Each child was costing

roughly 25K. The school district felt it was more efficient to build a program

in district to properly address the needs of the students. Of course, we were

concerned at first but since there were so many actively involved parents,

nothing was shortchanged that I can see.

Again, strength in numbers; I wonder what type of help would have been provided

if there were only one or two voices in the crowd instead of 10 or more.

Speaking to other parents in neighboring towns who have children on the spectrum

they mention that the same thing happened. Their school districts have built up

pretty strong programs for children with different needs and learning abilities.

My son is in 5th grade and in a mainstream class room with a support teacher. He

has an IEP that is appropriate and reviewed in timely fashion each year. The

teachers are pro-active and excellent, never had a problem yet. Hopefully that

stays the way, since next year he goes to the bigger middle school and changes

classes each period.

Just my $0.02.

Our current location is excellent. email me privately and I'll tell you more

about that. My son will be 13 next week and is getting amazing help. Not all

kids love it, but seems to be doing well emotionally and most of his

academics are good too. He failed math because prealgebra is pretty abstract

and I think he isn't quite ready but his teacher is tutoring him on tues/thurs

mornings. He has a 1:1 support guy and lots of accomodations. HIs math teacher

said he could pace up and down the aisles if he needs to move around. She asked

if having a rocking chair in the classroom would help him stay in there more.

County land is excellent as well. was diagnosed there at age

3.5 by childfind. I don't know how middle school is, but I know the services go

from one school to the next and that the people there all seem to get what

asperger syndrome is.

Texas was a very bad experience for us at first. We found one elementary school

that worked very well but there was no guarantee we'd be able to get the same

thing in middle school. Most people have to fight for services for kids with AS

because a lot of the educators just don't " see it " .

I'm so glad we didn't stay in PA. I grew up in Bucks County.

I know there are other kids in my son's school and in private schools in my area with AS but how do you reach out to them. The school can't give us any info because of privacy, which I understand. On our local AS support group site, there are only 2 kids the same age. Parents are afraid to let anyone know their child has AS because of being labeled by others. I talk to everyone and ask questions, not necessarily telling of my kids dx but trying to get suggestions for better behavior modification. I talked to a woman at a yard sale about her kids and mine and she referred me to a free advocate, which I didn't know existed. By reaching out to others, I'm able to gain more info and resources, but others aren't so open. I feel like posting signs in the supermarkets and around the neighborhood to find other AS

/ ADHD families so we can share ideas and have a local support system, organize group events for out kids, and stand up for our kids as a group. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Gen in Phila, PA area

My son fell through the cracks at the public high school and so we switched to a

private school for AS called Springstone in Lafayette, California. This school

literally saved his life. You should check out their website so you can compare

their program to what you can find in your local area. There's another school

for AS kids close by to us called Orion that also has a great program that

emphasizes academics more than social skills. I looked at the curriculum and

decided that Springstone would be a better fit for my son.

Anyway the point I want to make is that there are a lot of great schools out

there for AS and other quirky kids. What you need to look for is one that will

be a good fit for your child. One size doesn't fit all when it comes to clothes

and one AS school doesn't work for every AS student. My son is really

intelligent and thrived in the small classes and the individualized attention he

got at Springstone.

If you can't find a good program for AS close by or that is affordable, then my

advice would be to find a way that you can duplicate the experiences that the

great schools offer for AS kids. If I had to do it all over again and didn't

have Springstone close by, I would homeschool my son and try to do what they do

- build in lots of volunteer work, encourage them to try new things, and work

with each child's strengths and areas of interest.

What we ended up doing was starting an Asperger Support group ourselves, a couple of parents. We used Meetup, and set it up so that kids ages 10 and up could come with their parents. We didn't provide childcare, which is why we couldn't have younger kids.We met in IHOP restaurants for many years, until we got some space at a local church. The group grew to over 600 families in 7 years. The very best part about it was how wonderful it was (and still is - I moved away) for the kids to socialize with each other. The group is in Orange County, CA and the name of it is Autism Spectrum of Support. Meetup is a really terrific way to find other people who have the same interest as you do.Sarawww.aspergersupport.com> > > >> > > > Hi.I am the mother of a 13 year old boy with Aspergers. There is a public school for AS kids in Crystal MN, just west of the Twin Cities. This is their first year of operation, so its not perfect, they're still working the 'bugs' out. Also, there are so many resources in Minnesota, with a little digging it really offers a tremendous amount of support.... not the least of which is the Pacer Center... located in Bloomington, which is absolutely amazing: free advocacy, therapists, legal advice, classes, workshops, support groups resources, contacts, life skills and so much more. That contact alone has made a world of difference for me! Good luck to you! Kate

Hi Colleen, I understand your fustration. I have the same problem with my 14 year old boy. The schools do not know how to teach our kids, and do not know how to relate to them. I have been fighting my school system for 4 years to get better placement for my son, even when he fails 3 classes a year they still push him through to the next year. So now i have a 14 year old boy ( mentally he is 8) who does not know how to tell time or tie his shoes. My hubby and myself have visited a school for autistic kids( seeing that is what aspergers is (a high form of) ). It was terrible. They did teach the kids about school stuff only 1/3 of the day, the rest they sat folding boxes, walking around or doing nothing. And i knew that was not the right place for my son. So you reaaly have to visit the

sites. As for my boy he sees his brothers go to there friends houses and have there friends come over, and he gets sad. Because he has no REAL friends, per say. But we just keep trying to keep his spirits up. Don't give up,.

Sincerly,
