Guest guest
Madeline brought up trying out for softball next year and it makes me nervous. Along with her running her ability to self-soothe and just take the good along with the bad has me cringing. She tried Tennis summer camp...didn't go well, gymnastics awhile back..I think if we found a different teacher it might've been better..team sports haven't done good for her, but I am hoping it will be better for him! Guest guest
There is hope. is 11, she tried soccer at 3 (long before any diagnosis) and wouldn't even do anything (even though she wanted to play). Since she wanted us we retried at 4 but with my husband as the coach (so he was on the field with her) still nothing. We retried at 5 (mainly b/c a friend was the coach and needed my husband to assist), she went out for very short periods but all through all 3 tries of soccer she " didnt like ppl watching her " so didnt really do much. We tried dance at 4 and she was OK if she was always next to the teacher or at the end of the line. but at open house she hid under the bench, that was in front of only about 15 parents. yet in front of a whole auditorium for recital she was fine. then she tried softball at 9 and was actually ok (well i mean you could tell sghe was different but she played and no outbursts) so she played again this past year, horseback riding she does ok too so is doing that again now. as always, the only predictable thing is that shes unpredictable lol On Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 12:18 PM, patricia <Zazoo81198@...> wrote: Madeline brought up trying out for softball next year and it makes me nervous. Guest guest
All my sons played soccer, only 1 has AS/OCD. I remember at that age how cute all the kids were. My AS son (tho not the only one) would get distracted a bit (notice something on ground, notice some scratch on his arm to study...) so a bit of yelling to " go! " As he got older I did find that he played better at defense, in front of the goal. Telling him to keep the ball away from the goal, kick it away, etc. But after showing him where he was to stand, he stayed in that spot. Waiting for the ball to come there. Took 2-3 games to get him to understand he could move from there and where all he could go, but then go back to his " spot " (position). Anyway, he did really well once he got that down. So he wasn't having to make decisions, follow the ball down the field, pass, etc., this was a good sport for him. We did baseball too. The T-ball type where the coaches pitched was good. Later as he got older and the kids pitched and were MUCH more serious about winning, we quit that. For mine, he just had a problem with knowing what to do in the heat of the moment (fly ball, stay or run, where to throw a ball....). Just some thoughts, > > Our son is 4 and his dx ranges from " he has every marker " to another doc saying his AS is very mild. Anyway. > > What has been your child's experience with team sports? Guest guest
We tried to enroll my son (age 4 next month) in soccer, the previous summer and last summer. The other kids age 3-4 yrs old seemed to get it, they did the drills and followed directions. My son, didn't want to interact with the other kids, didn't follow directions and spent the time arranging the cones and and touching the flags. He did like kicking the ball into the goal net, but that was it. We will try again next summer, but I am thankful they let us do a trial run before paying for soccer class/camp! Guest guest
We tried soccer with my son at an early age as well and he was very cute but not real great lol. He would say, " Why do I need to get the ball- my team has it and they are doing greeat! " I pulled out of soccer after that first season and put him in MY GYM- tumbling class. He loved it and it helped immensely with coordination and large motor skills. We put back into soccer when he first turned 9 and he's been playing since. He isn't great. BUT he has a great coach who understands how to teach him. You have to always call his name and then be VERY explicit with instructions. As has learned the rules of the game he has got better. Since by nature he is a rule follower and wants to please people. Sometimes the other kids get frustrated with him but other than that I think it's good for him. > > Our son is 4 and his dx ranges from " he has every marker " to another doc saying his AS is very mild. Guest guest
oh man- you just described our experience with soccer in previous summers! The first time we tried it- he did the cone rearranging ,etc and the coach was not very helpful. This past summer.... both boys were old enough to play together and it was great. Plus, and I think this is key.... we have an amazing coach who is great with all kids, but especially special needs kids. I told him after the first session that my son has Asperger's and he was like " ok- thanks for sharing that with me. I will do what ever I can to make him feel comfortable! " he never pushed him too much or berated him. He would just ask him to join the group and say- it's ok, whenever you are ready. And sure enough.... my son would run out there to participate! I think having his little bro there too helped! > > > > > > > > > > > Madeline brought up trying out for softball next year and it makes me > > > nervous.
