Guest guest
Welcome to the group, a! Â Roxanna " The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. " E. Burke ( ) Son recently diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome Hello my name is a and my 16 year son has recently been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome this past June of 2009. I can tell you that my son and I were quite happy to finally hear this information. I had done alot of research and reading books and knew that he had AS, it was difficult to get my family doctor and the school to recognize it. We have been struggling for years since he was in kindergarten because he was clearly having problems with school. He has been diagnosed with a learning disability in expressive language oral and written and math. He is a visual and Kinesthetic learner (all clear indications of AS). The doctor how diagnosed him as AS told us that he requires the assistance of an Education Assist and I went to the school to advise them of the same and was met with much resistance. I am tired of the battle with the school. We was put on medication for the OCD symptoms and his thoughts of suicide and insomnia. I have recently taken him of the medication as he w as losing a lot of weight and it was not helping his insomnia. Now, he is doing good in terms of sleeping. It has been a long battle and I would just like some guidance from others in the same circumstances.
Guest guest
Thank you for your support and comments. I can tell you that my son felt a sense of relief when the doctor told him that he has asperger syndrome. It has been a long battle, one which I am sure is long from being over. I just want him to have a happy and successful life. These kids are brilliant in their own unique way. We are not supposed to be all the same. Can you image how boring this world would be. -- In , Deb Newman <Debbieln60@...> wrote: > > I don't know if I can provide guidance as I am new to this too. My son was > dx in May > and he is 15. Guest guest
Hi a!! Welcome !! I, too, just joined in about 2 wks. ago and my 17 yo son just got dx about 2mo. ago. And like you, have been educating myself about AS and the more i read, the better understanding i had about our son and how we missed the signs especially the inability to do well in social situations. I have worked with special ed. myself for about 6 yrs. now but more for the moderate to severe cases. But here I am gifted with this special boy myself. I think my career has definitely developed the patience I needed to have to deal with my own son who unbeknown to us has been dealing w/ this his entire life. But around 10th gr. his teacher has noticed that he has been withdrawing from peers and suggested a psych. so we did go privately (thnx to my great insurance) and this dr. he's been going w/ for 8 mo. never even noticed it. we had to go to a diff. psych who was able to dx my son on that 1st hr of consult w/ him. amazing. And now it made so much sense and was such a relief and very liberating feeling. my son, too, felt like a load off his shoulders. now he understands why he is so different from peers. Like your son, he is battling w/ insomnia. he says that his mind just can't shut down. it keeps going and going like an energizer bttry. He is undergoing neurofeedback which is suppose to help calm him down. still haven't seen much imprvmnt though. I have just been self-medicating him with tylenol PM which works sometimes. What did u give your son that has not much of sideffects?? you said he no longer suffers from it. I tried putting him into karate but did not help much and hated it. He was suffering from depression at one pt so he was given lexapro, but made him a bit jittery so just stopped it in 1 mo. In terms of IEP's i'm kind of new myself and is just in the process of getting one for my son. so far, the school has been cooperative. my son does not struggle much w/ the academics aspect, so I hope that they are still ok w/ doing IEP, just needs help with social skills. This is a great support group, i am learning a lot. hope u do, too. just to get the support and encouragement. and boy do we need it huh!! God Bless!! Guest guest
In terms of medication, my son was on Cipralex. It was prescribed my his doctor and was helping him sleep at night and controling his anxiety but then it was not working for his insomnia. So we have him drink milk before bed and he eats a banana. Which helps with the seritonin. Apparently it is a imbalance of seritonin which causes the anxiety. So, I can tell you that he is sleeping better now and even his mood is better. I found with the medication, he was acting kind of funny at times. My son is the exact same way in terms of what you said with your son at night time. He tells me that he does his best thinking at night. You see, he is an artist and loves to draw and this is when he is the most creative.
