My son had constant viruses from age 1 to 3 years. Basically, he would get a new runny nose or respiratory infection every 2-3 weeks with asthma symptoms. At age 3 years, his Naturopath did a comprehensive stool analysis and discovered he had an overgrowth of yeast (candida) and didn't have all the healthy bacterial strains needed in the gut. Since the gut is 75% of one's immune system, frequent illness means that the gut is unhealthy and is unable to protect the body and ward of viruses. She treated the yeast with a 2 month course of Nystatin and he has been on strong probiotics 3x daily, plus fermented foods (Kombucha, fermented vegetables, etc.) and Green Pastures fermented cod liver oil. His asthma is gone and he only gets a cold every 3 months or so. We did the GAPS diet for about 8 months. Before GAPS my son was a picky eater but now he'll eat almost anything. I fine the bone broths the most healing part of the diet. The juicing was also very helpful.

Sugar plays a big factor in all this too. It's weakens the immune system and robs the body of B vitamins. I only use natural sweeteners in our diet now (maple syrup and raw honey) and those are limited. I don't buy any processed food either.

Thanks for the replies about yogurt. Helps to know Im on the right trackwith my son. My daughter has the oppisite problemshe was never free of viruses last few years. She has constant viruses for three years and had up to 30 % time off school. She is a fussy eater and the Gaps diet would be difficult for her. I do make sure she has meat and veg every day but she does eat junk at school. Im wondering if she has immune problems or coliacdisease, She does not have typical symptoms of coliac but when she was 8 did get tested and was a possibility then but she went on a wheat free diet for a few years and was fine. Does anyone have any experience with constant viruses. She is otherwise fine and doing well at school.
