Guest guest
Hi, I have a 7 year old son who may have Asperger's Syndrome. He is in a regular 1st/2nd grade combination class at a public school. He receives Speech therapy and has a few modifications that I'm sure the teacher isn't even aware of. He is reading better than any of the 1st graders and his math skills are well above average as well. He is adjusting to the class. He has a bit of trouble on the playground but nothing drastic. We have a behavior contract and the target behavior is keep his hands to himself. He has had mostly all perfect days! The speech specialist wants to exit him from speech because he has done well on her tests. Yes, he has a great vocabulary. But he uses some words incorrectly. He always mixes up today, tomorrow, and yesterday. He makes up words like beround for around. And he does not use prepositions correctly. He knows on top of, under, and so on ... but he uses to, for, from, by incorrectly. I dont' want him to lose his accomodations and feel he still needs speech therapy. I read a book on Asperger's Syndrome that says that the CELF IV is a test that evaluates the pragmatics of conversation which I know would show his need for speech. Do you know the name of any other Speech Evaluations that would show this therapist that my son does indeed need speech? Thanks,
Guest guest
One of the best and most useful things we've ever done is have our son evaluated by our city's best Children's Hospital. He had a full round of evaluations by top professionals, including a full speech and language evaluation that highlighted for us his pragmatic speech issues and areas of need, including inferencing, understanding multiple directions, and other pragmatic weaknesses. Guest guest
yes, the TOPL (test of pragmatic language). I don't know the ages for that off hand. One thing to do is to request a test for pragmatic language. But also be cautious. My own ds scored really high on the TOPL a few years ago because he knows how to give the right answers. His ability to do these things in real life was another story. Luckily, his ST knows him well and put that in the report. One thing that helps is to have an evaluation that includes observations. Have the therapist sit around and observe how he functions in regular situations, at recess, class, etc. You can also write up your own list of observations to show the team. Just saying, " He needs this because he has this problem " is one thing...but to have examples (data) to back you up is so helpful. In addition, if you disagree with the ST evaluation, you can request an IEE (independent educational evaluation) at public expense. Get an outside independent eval might be really helpful.
