Guest guest
Awww , Im so sorry I didnt get this 'til now.. I HOPE you pulled it off EFFORTLESSLY!! From: O'Brien <nicole.obrien@...>Subject: ( ) Asperger's Syndrome Presentation... Date: Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 5:01 PM So I’ve been given VERY little notice to prepare a presentation for the grade 4, 5 and 6 classes TOMORROW MORNING, for 5-6 minutes about Asperger’s Syndrome, before they watch the Coulter video “Intricate Minds 3 – Understanding classmates who are differentâ€. I’m kinda freaking out – lol. Not because I don’t have a PLETHORA of information to share, but because I’m not sure how much to share, and what’s going to be the most effective. I’m thinking keeping it to behaviours they might have seen at school, etc… is best. But I want to focus on STRENGTHS, and looking past the difficult stuff, etc… Any advice? Has anyone else given this type of a presentation? I’m so thrilled the school is open to this type of awareness, but I’m really at a loss on how to present this to them !! Thanks in advance for any PROMPT replies (cause seriously, tomorrow morning? EEK! Lol) =)

Guest guest
Thanks for asking, Roxanna! It went amazingly well. The principal, who I’ve NOT had the greatest relations with, did a WONDERFUL job. She talked about respect and empathy, and then allergies, diabetes, and finally Asperger’s. She only briefly touched on it, and then turned the floor over to me. So I had the grade 4, 5 and 6 classes all listening intently to me. I went longer than I wanted, but I was ad-libbing a little in an attempt to TRY and keep them involved and engaged THEN we watched the DVD I bought, Coulter’s “Intricate Minds 3†which doesn’t focus on one DX, but rather touches on Autism, PDD-NOS, AS, ADHD, etc etc… and it is an EXCELLENT video if any of you haven’t already seen it, I HIGHLY recommend it. Very well done. I then left the room, and let them do a question and answer period. They are starting up a “question box†at school, too – incase any of them have questions, and any that come in about Asperger’s, I’ll pick up and answer periodically VERY cool. I just spoke with ’s teacher the other day, and asked her how things have been going in the classroom with his peers since the presentation. And she said VERY well. There are times when the kids ask why “gets to chew gumâ€, or “has that band around his desk legsâ€, etc… BUT then she simply reminds them and it’s a “OH right, that’s fine Miss… I understand.†And they move on. I also think they are FAR more patient with – the students AND the school. They’ve made several accommodations for him, and he’s THRIVING at school for the first time EVER. I couldn’t be happier !! Thanks for enquiring =) From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Roxanna Sent: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 3:52 PM Subject: Re: ( ) Asperger's Syndrome Presentation... How did your presentation go, ? Guest guest
Sounds like it was a success! I'm glad to hear it! I think kids are usually accommodating if they know what is going on.
