Guest guest
Hi Karla, Does the state have Katy Becket where you live? From what I have been told, Katy Becket is where the state pays the medical bills (just like medicaid). If the parents are over limit for medicaid (low income insurance) and they just go off of the child's income. From: karla smith <llamattude@...>Subject: ( ) Question on SSI Date: Saturday, January 23, 2010, 10:34 PM Hi; I have a question about SSI and assitance. We signed up for SSI last year and got approved right off the bat. Then we were told that we could not have x amount of dollars on hand at any one time and we could not make so much or we would not qualify. What little checks we did get from my son was just enough to pay for the doctor bills that insurance would not pay for. Then six seven months into all this things going good, we had added in payments for neuropsych evaluation and a school advocate in there. We were told that my husband (who is the only one working) made to much money and we not longer qualified for SSI. Then this month it started up again. However, that does not help what we are out of pocket for last month and could not afford. Now we are deeper in debt than we were starting out and we were just about to get a handle on things. Because we are not allowed to have over so much money to save up or anything. Then we did not know that this was going to run out after six months. Now, we are starting a new year and we are having to pay an extra doctor out of pocket as SSI will not pay for them either. We do have the other two paid off, but still after with this new doctor it is higher. We are not sure what we are going to do when six months roles around and we are told that we no longer qualify and will have to do things on our own when we are barely making it now. My husband works two full time jobs and in this area that just is not enough. It does not help that we are still making payments for taking my son to the first doctor who diagnosed him, we were making bi-weekly trips 350 miles one way when gas was at its highest. After maxing out 4 credit cards we and about to go broke we had to call it quits with that doctor. My question is, is there any other programs out there that may be able to help us as I'm almost in a state of panic at this point to see what one month done to us and here we stand a chance of facing this with six months. There is no way we can do that and take care of my son properly as well. Thanks for any help. I stay so confused with all this stuff. Guest guest
Hi Karla, Have you applied for state health insurance? I don't know what state you're in but here (MN) we can apply for State Ins.. be turned down for "making too much".. then apply for TEFRA, which is Ins. based on medical need and not on earning. They charge a monthly amount based on a sliding fee scale, ie: $300.00/mo. family of 5 making ~60,000. / yr. and it also qualifies families on that Ins. program for MANY other medical/mental health related resources with in the community. Also, does your dh have the option through his work to put money aside (untaxed) in advance for the upcoming year?? Many employers offer this unbeknown to their employees. The kicker is, if you don't use ALL the monies earmarked by the end of the year, you lose the balance. Might be worth looking into a low interest 2nd mortgage loan. The interest on that loan is around 8.2 %... considerably LESS than the 14 and 15% being charged by credit card companies. Then you could pay off the credit card balances which are killing your budget in finance charges, and pay a more modest amount. This may also free up some fluid cash to use as a buffer until you get the Ins., stuff straightened out. GOOD Luck ! Guest guest
Yes, the medicaid waiver program has been a Godsend to us. My husband and I both have Medicare due to disability (he's working disabled) but then my daughter would have nothing if not for the waiver b/c he makes too much money. Guest guest
Thanks all for your replies. To explain we have to pay out of pocket for doctors because the closest doctor that knows how to treat my son that takes the insurance, this last one does not speak english, we have had the experience of medicade paying for three months then deciding they will no longer pay and then having to find a new doctor. That has been very determental to my son, as he can not get the proper treatment. The doctor's they want us to go to are about eight hours away, which we simply can not do. Between the cost factor and my other son going to school, no we have no one to help us with my kids. So, we found a really good one that we like that was dropped after three months and just paying them out of pocket for his treatment. As for TERFA and other state insurance, KY does not have anything like that, or we have been told there is nothing else. There is KCHIP, which we were on for a long time, and were told that dh made $20 to much for that so we went to SSI for my son and paying out of pocket fairly high insurance on my other. I have none as we simply can't afford insurance on all of us. I do know of some states that have insurance for children no matter what the income, that they may have to pay so much, but they will be able to get insurance. As for the employers dh works for, they don't even offer retirement much less anything else. They are local government jobs, and they offer nothing except insurance on dh and that isn't very good. We found out how bad when he had to have a heart cath last year and we were stuck with the whole bill. Luckily his problems wasn't his heart, just stress, which he was told to reduce the stress. Easier said than done. As for a second morgage, we do not have a morgage at all and told that we can not get one because our house has no value to it, it is so old. The only vehicle that we own with any value to it we are still making payments on. Thanks so much for your help. Karla
Guest guest
I don't know how much of an income would be too much to qualify for help from charities, church, etc. I would try Easter Seals, United Way, and other Autism or Disability websites like: http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/helpinghand.php http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer?pagename=kentucky and folks here may be able to help you find more: http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer?pagename=research_info Another thing I have to ask (please don't take this the wrong way!) but have you thought about moving? You said your husband works 2 jobs but doesn't make enough for where you're at? Also if there's no good services nearby for your son you will be burning yourselves out very quickly there. Just a thought. Guest guest
Hi, I just started this group thing, so pls bear with me. Depending on the state you live in, you may be able to get a Family Subsidy payment for autism. Michigan provides this & it is not something easy to find out about. Go through your state web site for that search or contact your local Community Mental Health Dept. to ask them. I hope you can find if you are able to get it or something like it. It does help us and is for your exact situation. G. mom of with AS > > Hi; > I have a question about SSI and assitance. We signed up for SSI last year and got approved right off the bat. Guest guest
Hi , Glad to find someone in MI. I am in Traverse City. I have a 6.5 yr old son with Aspergers. Hope you can get this too. It has been a huge help. Have you ever gone to a DAN doctor? Does your son have any eating disorders? Hope to hear back soon! > > > > Hi; > > I have a question about SSI and assitance. Guest guest
I know you can apply on line and there are calculators to see if you qualify financially. Avery qualifies because of his down syndrome but we don't qualify financially, so he won't get it till he is 18. I know in TX if you get at least a dollar SSI you get medicaid. We were able to get it when he was little and it helped to pay for medicine and some co pays. Our reg did didn't accept medicaid and we didn't want to change. We applied over the phone when he was little and it was pretty easy. We just had to go to the office and bring documents.
