Guest guest
Yes, I think many people do not know their rights in a public school system. If anyone needs help understanding them check out wrightslaw.com, study it. We have had a large amount of corruption in Georgia Public Schools. In Forsyth, the money is not trickling down to the classroom-- illegal in many ways and they are overspending on the top end, so parents must know what to do and what they are entitled to. I very much hope parents understand in any district you can correct issues if you bring them up to the district in a group and you must learn early on how to advocate. Don't put up with bull. We have had facilitators that will actually lie to your face and stab you in the back here. Learn what you can do so you can get what is rightfully yours out of a public school system. Remember Shrenko? http://atlanta.fbi.gov/dojpressrel/pressrel06/moneylaundering071206.pdf Many of her associates are still employed in Georgia.. Know your rights and learn to advocate early. Never fear your school system either. You must be fearless to obtain FAPE in Georgia. Guest guest
Anytime she is being removed from class, she is missing the learning experiences and not receiving FAPE. You need to be aggressive with this nonsense, IMO. Go to the psychologist personally to sign that form. While you are playing tag with the psychologist, write notes and emails with dates stating, "I attempted to meet with you on (this date) at (this time) and you were unavailable. Please let me know when we can get together to sign....blah blah blah" A paper trail is important to create and if you find that over time, they are literally avoiding you, you need to contact a superior in the system to complain and get some action. Write a letter letting them know that she is missing a lot of class time and you would like a "FBA" functional behavior assessment done by the autism consultant (or bring one in) asap to avoid her missing important learning experiences and information. Definitely go see the autism society in your area or any advocacy group so you can get some people to help you. You definitely want a written account of when she is sent to the office and also, why. If they are not providing this information to you, then you need to call them and get it. If this happens daily, I would call or go in to see that teacher daily and get an explanation: was she sent to the office, for how long, why, what did you do to try to fix the problem before sending her, etc. Roxanna Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again. ( ) fape? Now I am wondering if a child is even getting a fape if they are out of the classroom so much they arent even being taught? my dd is in 4th grade so has 2 teachers, 1 for math/science, 1 for english/ss and she also has a teacher for gifted enrichment 1 day a week) and IMHO she is not being taught in her english/ss class b/c she is in the office. We were upset by the fact that we werent being notified when she was in the office so I requested the teacher let me know when she is in the office and why she was sent so I can do like a verbal social story to walk her through what happened so she doesnt do it again. Since we all know punishment works oh so well for our kids I figure prevention was better. However her teacher stated she was in the office every day, sometimes twice a day (and she only has her for 2.5 hrs a day) so it would be easier to just let me know when she has a good day. as far as ive seen she does nothing but sit when she is in the office and now she is supposedly failing english and social studies yet they arent keeping the online grade reports up to date so I can see that (online she has an 83 and 63 which are passing). So is that actually receiving an education? In addition to the email I sent requesting to be notified when she is sent to the office I will be calling the autism society today since they offer parent school partners and I will be calling the school psychologist to see what the heck is going on with her evals since we have yet to receive a permission to evaluate (coincidentally our state doesnt start the "timeline" until that is signed even if you have a request in writing, though our state also states it is illegal to put off having this signed for any reason at all) -- -mommy to Emma, Becca, , and Girl Scout cookies are coming! Guest guest
Thanks for the reply. I ended up finding a mentor through the sc autism society and after a good 2 hour conversation I feel like I have someone on my side. She said just that and said to contact the special ed director at the district, gave me her # and said she knows her and has worked with her many times if I need to use her name. Like I said I also contacted the teachers about the frequent office visits. I also contacted the psychologist about the permission to evaluate. The buck got passed on that one, I gave it to her teacher who gave it to her other teacher who put it in her cubby and when becca was made it must have been in the papers she threw out of her cubby and we can't find it anymore. But contacting the teachers and psycologist appt made an impression I wasn't playing around b/c I got a new one sent home and a copy mailed to me that same day. I am also learning that email is more powerful than phone calls, maybe it has to do with that paper trail? On a better note, the slp is on a much better ball. She sent home the permission to evaluate on monday, returned it tuesday and wendesday I received a note thanking me for returning it promptly and stating dates of when they would be evaluating her speech and that is right after spring break. On another good note she was only in the office twice this week. However there were only 4 days of school, half of 1 is spent in the gifted class she does well in and she started the social skills group this week which is 2 afternoons a week during the class she does the worst in. However the 2nd office visit that week my husband got the phone call (I was in storytime with the los) and it was from the vp we hadn't dealt with yet b/c the one that usually deals with becca was out. So dh got to make sure she knew everything and express his concerns about her being in the office so much. Which her reply was that she wasn't really to which my dh responded that was interesting b/c we have an email from her teacher stating he was there almost every day, sometimes twice a day so it would be easier to let us know when she wasn't there. Then they talked about behavior plans, etc. Dh figures the more ppl he freuqnetly " reminds " and are involved the more accountability there is so he was eager to make sure she knew EVERYTHING! And coincidentally he was planning to go up that afternoon to see rebecca so 2 hrs later he was up there to check on her and talk to her. So I think they may still view me as a pushover but are realising quickly that dh doesn't mess around (though he does negotiations and management for a living) On 4/2/10, Roxanna <MadIdeas@...> wrote: > > Anytime she is being removed from class, she is missing the learning > experiences and not receiving FAPE.
