, If your son has an IEP, have the school write in that the teachers have to provide him with the notes. I have it written in my ds IEP, that way you won't have to spend the money on getting a smart pen. Just a thought.-From: dweeny123@... <dweeny123@...>Subject: ( ) Need feedback on Smart Pen Date: Tuesday, November 9, 2010, 7:50 PM

Considering buying one for our AS 9th grader, failing History. His teacher will not post notes and he talks way too fast for our son to capture every word!

Thanks,

A couple of years ago I was looking for an easier way for my son to take notes

during class. A coworker told me about his wife's experience using the

Livescribe pen. Here's what he said:

*******

....using Livescribe for several months and loves it. It records with pretty good

audio quality. It does handwriting recognition now, a free software upgrade, and

that works well, even with pretty sloppy writing. (Since they capture each

stroke of the pen, the recognition is not as difficult as scanning handwritten

text and recognizing that.)

To be useful, he'll still need to take notes pretty steadily during class, but

they don't have to be super detailed. (Of course, good notes have their own

value.) Later, after uploading the pen to the computer, he can use those notes

to cue up the matching audio. For example, if his notes look like this:

Columbus

Portugal

Queen Isabella

money problems

boat building

provisions

.... then clicking on any of those words will cue up the audio from when he was

writing them. On the other hand, if he doesn't write anything for 20 minutes,

he'd have to fast forward and reverse through 20 minutes of audio to find

something he wants in that section of audio.

Along with the handwriting recognition, you can search on the computer for words

in your notes.

I'm pretty impressed by it.

**********

We debated on whether to get the pen only because we were afraid that my son

would lose it. We opted not to get it because of his propensity to lose things.

(Who can afford to lose a $200 pen?!) I am still considering getting him the pen

for later in high school or college. Right now he's a sophomore. One other

consideration is whether the school has any rules against recording class

sessions. You may have to get permission to use the pen.

As mentioned adding something into the IEP may help eliminate the

problem.

If he has an IEP, request a copy of the teacher's notes. Alternately, they sometimes let a good student provide a copy of notes if the teacher is that uncooperative.
