Guest guest
le, My son was put on concerta in 1st grade when they ran all dosage variations with ritalin and it didn't work. He went all the way to 54 mg within three months and it only made him more irritable and anxious. He would hid under the tables during class. He was switched to adderall at the end of first grade and it seemed to help for a while. But concerta never worked for any of my kids (2 older ADD and ADHD). How old is your son? What other meds have they tried? My son takes stratera now and it seems to work the best but in low dosage. He takes 25 mg a day. When he was on 60 mg it made him more agruementative and irritable. ne From: Dani <Dmgallagher83@...>Subject: ( ) Concerta // Side Effects Date: Wednesday, February 2, 2011, 10:40 AM Hi all! I'm relatively new to this board and was wondering what others' experiences with Concerta were? My son is currently taking it and has started to develop compulsions. He is now picking up pencil tips from the floor in the classroom and has gone as far as breaking them off other children's pencils. This appears to dominate his mind during the school hours. Also, although the med seems to be curbing his hyperactivity, it isn't doing anything for his focus. le
Guest guest
My son is currently in the second grade (age 8). Since December of 2009 we have tried: Prozac, clonidine, Strattera, Aderall and now concerta. He was on a combination of Strattera and Aderall for close to eight months and it worked wonderfully. He was able to focus and curb his impulsivity and actually be able to socialize well with his peers. However he started developing flat affect and was not eating nearly enough towards the end, even though we had the same dosage for pretty much the entire time. He lost a lot of weight and due to health reasons, I wanted him off of it. That combo seemed to work the best. Right now I am in the middle of discussing what else to try with his psychopharmacologist. Since the Adderal appeared to work well with him, we are looking at switching to Focalin or Ritalin LA because they are in similar class of meds. le ( ) Concerta // Side Effects Date: Wednesday, February 2, 2011, 10:40 AM Hi all! Guest guest
My son has been on concerta for almost 2weeks and it works great as far as keeping him calm and being able to stay on task with his work...I have noticed that he is having some facial ticks, this also happened when he was on the focalin only he would jerk his head to the side. He was on aderall xr but because his insurance would not cover it the dr changed it to something that would be covered by medicaid, I put a call in to the dr but have not talked to him about this yet...I want him back on the adder all but the dr seems to think that the concerta is the same....we will see. > > > From: Dani <Dmgallagher83@...> > Subject: ( ) Concerta // Side Effects > > Date: Wednesday, February 2, 2011, 10:40 AM > > > > Hi all! > > I'm relatively new to this board and was wondering what others' experiences with Concerta were? Guest guest
Sounds like you've been through the typical trail and error with medications generally perscribed for AS kids. Have you checked with your dr about Zoloft? Right now my son takes Strattera, Resperidon, Zoloft, and Clonodine, along with his alergy meds of zyrtec, singulair and nasonex. After 8 years of trial and error this seems to be the best combination so far. All kids are different and metabolize medications differently though. As far as I have been told by my son's dr who has been treating kids with ASD for over 40 years (he's almost 80) stimulant meds generally don't work on AS kids. Strattera is a non-stimulant med. I don't know what will work for your son but I hope you can get it worked out. I know how frustrating it can be trying new meds or dosages and then waiting to see if it works or they have side affect then starting all over. Good luck and let me know how it goes. :)ne From: C <stick_n_blaze@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Concerta // Side Effects Date: Thursday, February 3, 2011, 8:04 PM My son has been on concerta for almost 2weeks and it works great as far as keeping him calm and being able to stay on task with his work...I have noticed that he is having some facial ticks, this also happened when he was on the focalin only he would jerk his head to the side. Guest guest
Fawn, Many kids with AS have ADHD as well and because of all the issues they have trying to fit in and not having or being able to keep friends they have a high risk of developing depression. The demands of middle school and adolescence also can cause AS kids to developer depression. My son had such a hard time the last few years that he became suicidal. This is very common for these type of kids. ne From: C <stick_n_blaze@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Concerta // Side Effects Date: Thursday, February 3, 2011, 8:04 PM My son has been on concerta for almost 2weeks and it works great as far as keeping him calm and being able to stay on task with his work...I have noticed that he is having some facial ticks, this also happened when he was on the focalin only he would jerk his head to the side. Guest guest
Fawn, Very rarely will you find a child/person with AS and nothing else. There are usually always other comorbid issues. ADHD is the common one. Robin ......A rich man is not one who has the most, but who needs the least..... Guest guest
I must have one of the odd ones, although we might be having situational depression due to his father. I am trying very hard to get that straightened out in court. But he doesn't have OCD, ADD, ADHD..... He might have a touch of ODD. I know my dad does. I guess I may have to get more testing done.FawnFrom: and/or Robin Lemke <jrisjs@...>To: Sent: Sun, February 6, 2011 6:30:17 PMSubject: Re: ( ) Concerta // Side Effects Fawn, Very rarely will you find a child/person with AS and nothing else.
