i have to go do one of these on monday, was told it would take an hr, maybe longer.  is this a yes/no or an always, often, sometimes, never type questionare.  does it only have a results of either they do or dont have autism?  does it account for pdd-nos, aspergers, hfa etc?  has anyone had a hfa (or aspergers) qualify as autistic on it?  the school has decided we may be able to get her iep done faster depending on the results of this test.  i guess if she qualifies on this than they arent going to make her redo her wisc, woodcock, etc (hers are only about 15 mo old, from last school year).  so that would mean we could be moving onto the iep writing process as early as next week if thats the case, b/c the adaptive and behavior scales are coming home to be redone today and she has been doing her speech evals this week and her observations are already done.  i am guessing her observations didnt go well since I got the phone call today about this and she kept talking about not wanting to have to redo these others if they dont have to b/c she has been under so much stress, etc.  but I have been told by many people that high functioning children frequently dont qualify as autistic at the school district, department of mental health, etc so i am assuming it is the rating scales that do this b/c she is clearly in the autism dx if you use the dsm.  I have already done at least a half dozen behavior rating scales, conners, adaptives, etc through the years so know what to expect of those but have no information or esperience at all with the autism rating scales.  I couldnt find any, actually helpful, info with a google search, just mainly a very brief description and places you can buy them if your a psychologist.  so would love any info ppl can offer/  i have a really hard time with the yes/no questionares b/c I guess I forget that even sometimes is a yes but instead start debating in my head of exact instances and if I cant think of them I answer no even if I feel the answer should be yes or if it has only happepned a few times i feel like it should be no as well, does anyone have a clue what I mean in all my babbles?

I took our dd to the children's hospital/clinic to be assessed by someone who

deals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Questionnaires of the yes/no and the

always/often/sometimes/never types were tough to get through...stressful,

because you don't want to make a mistake by being too extreme either way.

However, it's probably best to lean toward the side of noting what you have been

observing, rather than not; if in doubt whether or not your child exhibits the

tendencies often enough to report it, it's best to report it. If you underplay

the 'symptoms', he/she may not get the assistance needed. If you've noticed

something during the past six months, it counts...it matters, and should be

recognized. It doesn't matter that much what started any meltdowns, for example;

only that the meltdowns happen. Don't second-guess yourself. If a symptom is

there, it's there. If it's often enough to concern you, it's often.

Well, this may not have helped much, but I hope it answered what you were

wondering about. Take care! -Kari
