,I'm curious what gives him an AS diagnosis and bipolar? My son (8) is an Aspie with anxiety, tics, anger outbursts. A few drs have floated the BP thought b ut his psych says it's too early to decide in his case and that his current diagnoses explain his issues. I have my doubts and wonder if BP is in our future. and E.V.,

I have a child with both AS and BP. For us, the BP dx came about when he

started having episodes of paranoia when he would get extrememly upset or

stressed out over something. The first time we saw it, he was at home,

thankfully. As opposed to the school, I mean. Well, not technically at home

since we were in the middle of a military base and he decided I was a spy going

to hurt his sister and was screaming this in a parking lot..... Not a good

thing!

Kirsten, our son was already diagnosed with Mood Disorder - NOS. Had been for

several years. Like you, docs had floated BP around several times, but declined

it due to age or not meeting enough criteria. The paranoia was what pushed it

over the edge this time. We see a lot of stuff with AS, but paranoia and

delusions aren't generally among them. Now, even with pretty strong meds to

control it and the anxiety that causes it, we see some delusions under stress.

Like he turned to his aide at school the other day and asked " They are all

pointing at me. Why are they all pointing at me? (meaning the other kids in

class) " The problem with that was that no one was even looking at him (he sits

in the back of the classroom so that noone CAN stare at him), much less pointing

at him. We have begun to use this as a first-line indicator of when a situation

is too stressful for him. We don't have any other clues before that any more.

My son is like yours. One minute he's raging mad, the next he's crying that he

should be in heaven (or hell depending on which way the wind is blowing) and

then the next he's raging again or happy as a clam.... Enough to drive US all

over the edge... Haven't ever tried Zoloft with him. Tried quite a few other

things, but not that one.

Keep the faith. E.V., if you want to talk, let me know.

Hi,

The dx is not closed yet, but my son (11) is bipolar since last year. This behaviour started just after a traumatic bullying event at school. Sometimes he is also paranoid(and violent) against people staring at him. Everything was fine before and he was, even considering his typical Aspie behaviour, a very good student. At the moment, he is not going out. In my opinion, after reading so many reports of this group and others (two groups in Brazil and one group in the UK), I believe he is not the only one "Asperger Plus..."

All the best.

Pedro,

I was thinking about my son's behaviors when I was reading your post. We have

always had problems with behavior issues and mood swings (usually just when he

gets denied something he wants) but we never had anything more or swings that

came out of nowhere until recently. I was trying to see if I could find an

event, like you were able to. I know that when this started, we were under a

lot of stress at home with my husband starting a different job and switching

shifts for the first time in 15 years (he's always worked afternoons/nights, and

now he works days). I wonder if that is what started his paranoia's, the stress

of the change. Now he slips into them, briefly, whenever he gets overly

stressed. Even though he's on a couple of pretty strong anti-psychotics to

control them, when he's too stressed, they start again...

Hmmm. Makes you wonder if stress triggers it in Aspies?

Hi E.V. :)

My 13 yo son started becoming suicidal around age 11. First he started to sink

into a deep depression. I was used to the explosive " I wish I were dead "

comments during his rages but this was different, it was a calm eery emotion. He

would lay there and quietly tell me, while tears streaming down his face. " I

just want to be dead, I wasn't made for this earth and I want to kill myself " .

The difference was the mood, it wasn't just anger lashing out, it was calm,

matter of a fact, " I will kill myself " mood.

When that happend the first attempt at meds was Prozac. Only being on it for one

week he was manic, his teachers met me at the car when I picked him up and asked

" what is he on!?! " He was crawling up the walls at school, singing, poking

people, just as if he was being driven by a motor. The doctor FINALLY considered

bipolar at that point. My grandmother suffered from bipolar and so does my

mother and my husbands brother. Since it typically runs in families so strongly

they finally decided to treat him for it. He's been on lithium for two years now

and even though it seems to shut down the sad, I want to die talk, it doesn't do

anything for the rage, anxieties and other stressers he deals with everyday.

As far as his actions coming from the AS or the BP, I really don't know which is

which as they so commonly are comorbid I think they tend to overlap. I've done

nothing but research since he was two yrs old and other than the suicide talk

and the extreme manic from the prozac I tend to wonder if he's more AS than BP.

I would like to wean him off the lithium to see however it scares me to death to

actually do it. So for now he'll continue the lithium and I'll continue to

research AS and BP an apply ideas/suggestions to his life and basically just

wait it out. It is what it is, even though I wish things were different.

I too have heard " I'm not worth being on the planet " . My son also is up and down

but not so much happy then sad, it's mostly things like he's happily playing a

video game and I ask him to brush his teeth or tell him it's time to feed the

dogs. All you know what breaks loose and you'd think I asked him to perform

brain surgery!

I " m sorry I'm not much help as I'm living the chaos on a minute to minute basis

too but at least it's good to know we're not alone in this,

Taker care!

My son too experienced a tramatic event in school, back in 3rd grade he was in

the bathroom and a boy burst in, held him down and touched his privates. He

didnt tell us until a couple years later but it's something that still (4 yrs

later) bothers him. It makes me wonder if something tramatic can throw an

underlying biplar person into full blown symptoms? Almost like a post tramatic

stress syndrome?

And I believe you're absolutely correct, it seems like Aspergers is comorbid, or

accompanies so many other " syndromes " ie. bipolar, ODD, SDI, etc. Looking back

to when I was a child I can see so many of my sons symptoms in myself however

back in the 70's things like that weren't looked into like they are now. I just

assumed that everyone was bothered by things like seams in socks and itchy

clothing tags. And I too suffered from extreme anxieties but my mom just blamed

it on other things. Which tells me that aspergers, sensory issues, bipolar are

also STRONG in the genes too.

Look forward to hearing more about what has or hasnt worked for your family.

take care,

I have know since he was less then 2 he had something going on but my EX-mother in law kept telling me it was me. I wasn't disciplining my child. I told her many times I put him in time out, spank him, and just about anything legal you can do at that age. He was kicked out of a day care at age 2 for being aggressive with kids. (A lot). Finally we put him in a church day care where there were many who could not deal with him but this one lil older lady one, was able to get through to him some. He stayed with her til kindergarten. Another thing he has always had was speech. In kindergarten I asked and they said they could not test him in kindergarten because it could be maturity. In first grade we started speech. He is on vyvanse ans zyrtec and singulair for asthma. He did ok in school but still very aggressive and defiant. I thought he might have picked up some aggression from his father who was abusive to me and was uncontrolled spankings to steven. He continued and I just felt that I just didn't know how to help him. His younger brother is 4 yrs younger. He beats him kicks him hits him and tries to hurt him. He waits til I'm in the bathroom or laundry room or away for a few minutes and I will hear andrew the little on crying. This continued for a while. I couldn't put him in counselling or psychiatrist because of money. My ex's insurance was so expensive. I went down to DSS but I made too much money. WOW. Lol. He said if ex would drop him from his insurance he would guarantee he had medicaid. Told dad and he said NO. That ticked me off. Upset me because I couldn't get help for me and my little andrew. Well for steven because he is so frustrated. So just this past year., steven is 9, I made a way to get him seeing psychologist and psychiatrist and this has been what we find. He does well in school. No AB's but average except in reading. Hates to read he is finally getting a psychological testing done soon. Thank God. There is more but it is so much. I can tell you how many times I cried because I thought I was a bad MOM. It hurts. I noticed you said your son is on singulair. My 12yo was on it until a couple

of months ago for asthma as well. I started seeing some threads on this board

and another one with parents talking about singulair increasing aggression in AS

and Autie kids. I talked to my son's ped and asked her about it. She hadn't

heard of it, but agreed we could try taking him off of it and see what happened.

At first the aggression seemed to be getting better off the singulair. Then we

had the paranoia start, but I'm pretty sure the two aren't connected.

The school telling you that they can't test in K for speech is stupid. I just

love how the schools try and get out of providing services when they can!

Keep your head up, ! You didn't cause this, nor did his dad. We can't

kiss it away either.... Keep pushing. Hopefully things will get better with

psychiatry and counselling.

We're here for you!

Oh my son is on abilify keppra and vyvanse. Seems to do ok. My hardest thing or challenge is morning. He is not a morning person. When he wakes up he cuses every word in book. I try ignoring because he don't understand he is doing it I guess. With the impulsiveness. I also have a hard time with him wanting to be the boss of everyone and and hitting brother worse than the brotherly love. He loves his brother but bosses him and hits him throws things. Puts holes in walls. Please tell me this can be normal things with all this. Hi / All,

Stress / changes is a very relevant factor for Aspies / HFA or even for Neurothypicals. I have many stories with changes(*) or stress. I also believe that the hormones related to the adolescence (Victor is early in this aspect) and the "recent discovery" that he is very different from the others are affecting his behavior. Last month, he tryied to jump from the window (4th floor) after a fight with his brother. At the very last minute, It was possible to hold him from his shirt!!! Imagine, we almost went to the front-pages of the news! After this episode, he was saying, crying, that he wanted to kill himself and was born in the "wrong planet".

Last Saturday, we went to a new doctor (younger generation w/ a post-doc in autism in Brazil and in the USA). This new doctor said that Victor does not have BP or schizophrenia (sometimes I wonder, with his belief that everybody is watching him..), but inside a very strong depression. The doctor said that his comorbity is a deep depression that comes with the adolescent with AS. He recomended a new anti-depression medication (I forgot the name now).

Let's see...

All the best,

Pedro.(*) The worst "change" or BIG mistake was made when we decided to visit my sister in London. During that period, I have no one to stay with him. He hated everything: the food, the climate, the "wrong" position of the drivers, etc, etc. In summary: it was a desaster. He said that he does not want to visit this "upside down" country anymore. Sounds funny, but this created a lot of problems when we went back home. I love London/UK and will visit this city again, but not with Victor. In reality, I not am sure when I will travel with Victor again.

Pedro,I was thinking about my son's behaviors when I was reading your post. We have always had problems with behavior issues and mood swings (usually just when he gets denied something he wants) but we never had anything more or swings that came out of nowhere until recently. I was trying to see if I could find an event, like you were able to. I know that when this started, we were under a lot of stress at home with my husband starting a different job and switching shifts for the first time in 15 years (he's always worked afternoons/nights, and now he works days). I wonder if that is what started his paranoia's, the stress of the change. Now he slips into them, briefly, whenever he gets overly stressed. Hello Pedro,

In reading your story, it reminded me of my son (7 yrs old w/PDD-NOS). We went to Guam over the summer to see the Grandparents who he loves very much. It was our first time on such a long flight-15hours!! The flight actually went well b/c they had movies on board, but the trip itself was a disaster, as you said. He hated the food, the people, the heat, the ocean, pools, and rain that Guam has. He wanted to go home every day. I don't think it was your fault, about the decision to go to London. It is the nature of our kids to not take change very well, at least with my son.

Don't beat yourself up though,

Take care,

Cathleen

Thank you Cathleen.

I just had a conversation with a old friend that is studying autism (genetics) during the last 20 years and he desagrees with the "deep depression" dx from the new doctor. According to my friend, this doctor did not consider the quantity of medication that Victor is taking at the moment (07 mg of Risperdal / 02 pills of Depakote 500 mg / 20 drops of Dogmatil / 20 drops of Verotina). Victor is taking this amount of drugs recomended by the best recognized doctors available, following an intensive therapy program and he did NOT improve during the last 8 months. I do not know what to do...Sometimes, I have the feeling that Victor left us 08 months ago...

All the best,

My son was first diagnosed with Mood

Disorder-NOS, then PDD-NOS, then Mood Disorder was upgraded to Childhood

Bipolar.. now they are thinking that PDD will be upgraded to Aspergers (but due

to his age, almost 6, they are hesitant) AND he carries a genetic duplication

22q11.1 which is complicating a clear diagnosis.

Hi / All,

Stress / changes is a very relevant

factor for Aspies / HFA or even for Neurothypicals. I have many

stories with changes(*) or stress. I also believe that

the hormones related to the adolescence (Victor is early in this

aspect) and the "recent discovery" that he is very

different from the others are affecting his behavior. Last

month, he tryied to jump from the window (4th floor) after a

fight with his brother. At the very last minute, It

was possible to hold him from his shirt!!! Imagine, we

almost went to the front-pages of the news! After this episode,

he was saying, crying, that he wanted to kill himself and was born

in the "wrong planet".

Last Saturday, we went to a new doctor

(younger generation w/ a post-doc in autism in Brazil and in the USA).

This new doctor said that Victor does not have BP or schizophrenia

(sometimes I wonder, with his belief that everybody is watching him..),

but inside a very strong depression. The doctor said that his

comorbity is a deep depression that comes with the adolescent with

AS. He recomended a new anti-depression medication (I forgot the

name now).

Let's see...

All the best,

Pedro.

(*) The worst "change" or BIG mistake was made when we

decided to visit my sister in London.

During that period, I have no one to stay with him. He hated

everything: the food, the climate, the "wrong" position of

the drivers, etc, etc. In summary: it was a desaster. He said

that he does not want to visit this "upside down" country

anymore. Sounds funny, but this created a lot of problems when we

went back home. I love London/UK and will visit this city again,

but not with Victor. In reality, I not am sure when I will travel

with Victor again.

Pedro,

I was thinking about my son's behaviors when I was reading your post.

We have always had problems with behavior issues and mood swings

(usually just when he gets denied something he wants) but we never had

anything more or swings that came out of nowhere until recently. I was

trying to see if I could find an event, like you were able to. I know

that when this started, we were under a lot of stress at home with my

husband starting a different job and switching shifts for the first

time in 15 years (he's always worked afternoons/nights, and now he

works days). I wonder if that is what started his paranoia's, the

stress of the change. Now he slips into them, briefly, whenever he gets

overly stressed. Even though he's on a couple of pretty strong

anti-psychotics to control them, when he's too stressed, they start

again...

Hmmm. Makes you wonder if stress triggers it in Aspies?

since last year. This behaviour started just after a

traumatic bullying event at school. Sometimes he is also

paranoid(and violent)Â against people staring at him.Â

Everything was fine before and he was, even considering his typical

Aspie behaviour, a very good student. At the moment, he is

not going out. In my opinion, after reading so many reports of

this group and others (two groups in Brazil and one group in the UK), I

believe he is not the only one "Asperger Plus..."

the BP thought b ut his psych says it's too early to decide in his case

has gotten better since he went back on Zoloft, but still it's a roller

coaster.

Hi Pedro,

My son has had big "rebounding" issues when coming off a medication (Risperidal). And, it lasted way more than a week! It was really, really hard, so I can relate.

I am a mom of a 12 year old child who had a psych hospitalization last spring, and he is now on 3 meds. He is more stable and not as volatile; he is not aggressive now, and the meltdowns are less.

I think getting another opinion from an expert with meds asap is a great idea. I only recognize the amount of Risperidal, and know it is really high; when that was tried with my son, they aimed for 2mg.

I am going to make a suggestion, just to plant a seed- I know I would not ever have wanted to hear it, and I don't want to offend you. I am wondering if your son could be hospitalized and taken off the meds, and see what you have; then try adding one at a time, or a different one, to see what helps. It must be hard to tell what is the meds and what is the AS.

My son's hospitalization was so difficult in so many ways, for him as well as for the rest of us, but I have to say it helped a lot; he hasn't put any holes in the walls, there is no hitting or kicking anyone; my daughter's nightmares about him and his behavior have slowly stopped (I had to 1:1 her because of his aggression for more than a year, and I don't have to 1:1 her now, although I supervise very closely still), etc.

I would be glad to tell you more of our experience if it would help. Hang in there.

Hi and All.I agree!! He is taking a huge amount of medication with very limited results. That is the reazon why we are looking for a second opinion and maybe change all the related therapy (06 different ones). However, considering our previous experience, we do know that we must be very carefull when changing or decreasing medication. The last time we changed medication (Risperdal to Abilify), Victor went inside a very serious "episode". It was necessary to go back. There is no cure for autism, but something is wrong...maybe the "comorbity" is getting stronger. I don´t know. Please, any recomendations? Similar Experiences? All the best for you all,Pedro.
