Guest guest
What is he dx'd with - a learning disability? I would ask to have an educational evaluation done. Just tell them how school is going for him and they usually know what to do from there. Tell them you suspect a learning disability. I went to my pediatrician the first time with my oldest dd and I just said, "She works hard but she isn't getting it" and he set up evaluations. If they don't do eval's then they can usually recommend someone who does. I would probably appreciate an outside evaluation because they are not biased and sounds like you have a lot of years of bias going on with in the school. But if you think they will do a decent evaluation, then request a full educational eval be done and do it in writing so they can't put it off too long. Guest guest
Wow Debra, CONGRATS!!! Remember they need to do a Summary of skills. You might find having one handy if he goes to college and needs accommodations. I know how you felt exactly. When my oldest no longer would go to school, I was just so depressed and couldn't imagine stepping through that door into another room, so to speak. But with private tutoring, he did so much better and had time to get himself together too. It worked out so much better than I ever imagined. Then when my next ds was having so much trouble in middle school, I didn't wait for them to do any more damage. I had already checked out other options because I figured that the day was coming based on previous experience. It was really scary to do it though. Even the second time. I was numb. I kept thinking, "Am I nuts or what?" lol. It's considerd "OTHER" health issue on his IEP. I'm going to ask his Ped for an educational eval. Thanks so much. Guest guest
Robin, I'm teetering on the same dilemma. My son's school is horrible and he has gotten further and further behind. I don't know what to tell you because I'm stressing over the exact same thing. I hope things get better for your son. This is just so despicable that our children have educators that just don't care. ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: son depressed?/online schools Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:21 AM Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online. Guest guest
ne, I know....it's horrible.Ya know what really ticks me off? Me!!!! I have and will continue to fight for my kiddo's. I have always been nice and sometimes even make myself sound "dumber" than I am JUST to make me NOT look like a cocky mom....and to have them EXPLAIN to me their thinking. (Hope that made sense). I have thanked anyone who has ever given of their time - even thought they're supposed to give it. I take their word of my kids sometimes, too.....thinking that after all these years and my other kids, they are doing their best. But.....then I get home....or have a rough patch.....or go over old papers of the kids' and look over past emails and I panic and get really ticked. I have verbal conversations with myself looking over the stuff. Arguing to "no one" while I'm the only one in the house how ridiculous certain things are.........crying about the struggles the kid I"m crying about at the time is going through,......arguing to myself about how long I've noticed problems. Hell, even arguing out loud WHY they can't do this or do that!!!! Then,,,,I say, "crap, we've been dealing with "these" issues for his entire school "career". Maybe it's time that we try something else. My problem is when, though. Do I give 6th grade a chance? New school. New "sped teachers".............part of me says, "Sure". But,,,,,the scared, pissed off, sick-of-the-failures- part says that if we wait to give 6th grade a shot, that's another YEAR. Sigh.......... I've said it before......many others have, too,,,,,but I wish we could all live in a communitiy together. Our kids would have friends. Our NT kids would have other NT kids as friends that understood crazy, loud, obnoxious households. We'd have gals who understood why we sometimes wear the same fricken shirts for 2+ days in a row (not me-,,,,,I've heard this is done...he he). We'd also understand why "so and so" didn't want to be sociable and only wanted to stay in for a while. Our kids could try out different sports or things.....and we wouldn't have to stand guard waiting to hear a horrible comment and pounce - further alienating our entire family. Sigh........................ I'm gonna go make me an Old Fashioned. Mama needs a cocktail. Robin ......A rich man is not one who has the most, but who needs the least..... Guest guest
Robin, Did your cocktail help? We've all been there. It's just my opinion, but I think you're doing the right thing by letting your son continue in school for 6th grade. If you work with him until then, get some tutoring, maybe you will see some progress. And then see how school goes for the beginning of the year. If it goes bad, and you want to pull him out in Dec. or Jan., at least you can say you tried everything and it wasn't working. At that point, you would know he needs the one-on-one teaching he could get at home. In the meantime, you can prepare yourself better to help him so it will be successful.Oh and I have some houses for sale in my neighborhood, if you want to start that commune. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Suzanne suzmarkwood@... I want so badly to protect him and do what's best, as we all do for our kids, and during rough times, the "right thing" can seem so clouded. I'm taking it day-by-day. Going to talk to his PED and see about getting an Educational Evaluation done. That way,,,,,,,,,with his dx, maybe I (and the school) can better suit his needs. Sigh............... Guest guest
Robin, I wish I had taken my son out of school when he was in 6th grade. Things were never great with school but they got 10 times worse when he started middle school. I too am always very polite and always thank them for their time and efforts. Then I get home or I look over paperwork later and realize just how hosed we're getting. Now, I question everything and ask for documentation. I wish I had done this all along. After finding changes made to his IEP in Oct that we never agreed to I will NEVER sign anything without taking it home first. I get so mad at myself (like you said) for not catching it or for taking what they say as well intended. It's all crap! It's disgusting! They think parents are stupid and I'm personally tired of the whole game. Why should I have to dumb down for them to stroke their egos. I've done it for years and I would apologize and say I understood how frustrated they are and that I want to help them and I would bring them information to help them understand. All I got was my son still getting suspended and him falling further behind. Oh, let me stop! I'm venting. Sorry! Your idea of a community of our own sounds good right now. Where's that drink? Think I'm needing one today!! ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: son depressed?/online schools Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:21 AM Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online. Where is the teaching in that? If you would do that, why not call it homeschooling vs. e-schooling. I guess because someone else is grading your work? I'd take the extra time to find an e-school with live teaching if that is what is important to you. I haven't seen the other kind. Guest guest
Robin, You son is in 6th grade? Right? That is the hardest year...believe me...it was hard for me and for my son. It was the worse year for discipline...he actually was suspended one day from school for spitting in his ex-girlfriend's hair...ugh! And, now when I look back at it, would you believe I get a chuckle. It was so typical aspie. He knew it was wrong...but he didn't care...he didn't think about the outcome. It was the year i had him in Sped classes (worse mistake). He got this girlfriend who really was wrong wrong wrong for him. One day she kept making fun of his "big brother' an older neighbor boy who he looked up to. He was in an auto accident and almost died...he had to wear a neck halo....she was making fun of it. My son got angry and told her if she didn't stop he was going to spit on her...well, she kept it up and guess what...he spit on her. OMG. He was suspended. I guess I could have fought it ...but i wanted my son to realize how unhealthy and inappropriate his actions were. And, to tell you the truth, he loved being home and I told the school that. We did have a talk at home and I told him I knew how he felt but you can not spit on people. I think he learned. I had to try to talk to him about girls and such. Girls can be so mean...catty...etc. Well, I pulled him out of some of the Sped classes....even though he didn't want to...but he flourished. He is in inclusion classes...has moved up to jr. High..9th grade. Next year is high school (10-12). I stopped bugging him about school work. I told him the choice is his...he is the one who will suffer if he fails. I have let go some. I have given him the freedom (to an extent) and responsiblity. I stopped hold him back by holding his hand and doing every thing for him. Yes, we still have problems but as far as school work he is doing okay. He could do so much better but we don't fight at home. He has an 80 in English and History, 86 in Algebra and 95 in Reading and 76 in Band. He probably could have all 90's if he really applied himself and studied...with me pushing him...but you know what...life is so much better this way. I told him for every grade in the 90's he gets $20 and every grade in the 80's he gets $10. I know it sounds like a bribe...but it helps especially now that he has a girlfriend. He earned $50 and instead of the money....he opted for a pair of new pants...whoo hooo.... Remember, 6th grade is a rough one...I think it gets better...at least it did for me when I was in 6th grade and for my son. Guest guest
Jan, Well,,,,things sure HAVE gotten better for you and your son. I remember reading some of your old posts and almost crying along with you. Sigh. Ian, actually is in HS, 9th grade. Another son is 5th (6th next year- he's the one I've been writing about THS week...he he). I'm shocked to hear about girlfriends with your son. Ian hasn't cared. I think he does now...just by seeing little smiles here and there when comments are made or when we're watching a show. BUt....no outwardly verbal announcing that he wants' one. As far as acaemics, he too, is really good. If he actually tried, man, he could be amazing. I think that's the way it is with ANY teen, though, when academics aren't a problem. With my other son and one of my daughters, they have real academic issues....and that really sucks. he he. I pay all my kids for grades. We started this year. Maybe because Ian started HS, and grades are starting to matter more (for life).......but with he and the ones who CAN do well acedemically, we pay $15 for each A and $10 for each B. There are only 3 grade periods, so it's not like we pay by the week. Anyway, it really is a source of work for them. They know that if they put in more time, they get more $. Like life, in a way. My others that struggle academically, we pay what we pay the ones listed above (so it's fair)....but tell them that as long as their grades don't go down for a reason such as not turning in work.......they'll be rewarded. So...if their marks still say P (progress noted) or S(satisfactory) then we tell them they've done their part!!!!! Kids sure are different, aren't they? Sigh.
