Guest guest
just wanted to interject my two cents about our brilliant kids that don't care about school, good grades and just get by because they can. I am a teacher and have found that my son hates repetitive work. For example, if you have a math lesson, he gets it in the first problem in the work book. He doesn't understand why we insist that he complete 30 problems for practice when he already understands it on the first problem. So if they don't do the additional problems, they get bad grades. So, our kids get it right away and don't need the practice as normal students. Why do the schools continue to fit our kids into their box? Guest guest
Oh Deborah, You are speaking wonderfully!!!! When my oldest was home for 6th and 7th doing the Wisconsin Virtual Academy, they worked on the "prove you can do it and move on" plan. It was sooo great for Ian. If they wanted to try to test, they could. If they passed with at least 85% - move on. If they couldn't, they had to do that lesson. It worked sooo well with him. I agree.......they should do it this way in school. So much agrivation could be done away with. Now,,,,,,repetitive problems have their place if a child isn't grasping it. No qualms there. Sigh..........this is what we struggle with here. We know how well a Virtual School worked for us........the "moving at your own pace".............but now that he's back in school and functioning and learning....it feels that that's where he needs to be. Sigh, again. Robin ......A rich man is not one who has the most, but who needs the least..... Guest guest
No snow this time and I'm actually glad. The last three IEP meetings we've had scheduled got cancelled due to snow. If it happened a fourth time I'd think it was devine intervention. I also think I would need a Xanex! So no snow and here we go tomorrow! Lot's of things on the table. It's going to be a long one. This time bringing an advocate and I'm not signing anything without bringing it home to go over it with a fine tooth comb. Nervous as hell, but actually looking forward to getting some things hashed out. Wish me luck! Hope you're enjoying the kiddos and your snow days. I'll let you know tomorrow night if I need that drink again! ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: son depressed?/online schools Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:21 AM Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online. Guest guest
I have also used an advocate ever since our first experience in trying to get help from my son's school. In 4th grade, we had him privately evaluated and he was dx ADHD and anxiety disorder, so we asked the school for some basic accomodations. They decided to have a private meeting and told us he was not eligible for any help since his medication seemed to be solving the problem! OMG, I wrote to the superintendent and told him that this is illegal, and that I did not want to be an adversary, but I was prepared to take legal action if needed. They immediately decided on a 504 plan, without any school evaluation whatsoever! When they were not following his 504 plan and he was getting into trouble, we got an advocate. Since then, my son was dx with AS (at the suggestion of the advocate that he be tested for an ASD after hearing some of his problems) and he has an IEP...all thanks to our advocate. I would not go to any school meeting without her, and she is worth every penny! > > > > > > Yeah i have never heard of Blue Sky..... so i dont know about that one , doesnt > > > sound to appealing tho! lol I live in Wisconsin ( go packers...lol sorry had to > > > add that in there, still excited over last nights game!!lol) > > > > > > > > > As far as other parents of children that go to connections academy for , their > > > kids have loved it , im sure its not the case for every child , you gotta find > > > what works best for yours! Guest guest
Thanks Robin, and I did!! It was interesting to say the least. Let me just say the meeting started at 1200 and didn't end until 5:20, and that is because I ended it to reconvene on the 15th. I did think of this group from time to time during my 5 hour meeting and all the great advice I've gotten. We were talking about how my son tries to be funny but doesn't quite know how and really botches it up sometimes. I mentioned I was in this great support group and how other parent's have seen the same thing with their kids. I mentioned someone saying they bought a joke book for their kid and now the school social worker is actually going to try that with my son. Thank you to whoever posted that! I can't remember who that was. Anyway, I'll have to tell everyone about it in another post. OMG! It's been an emotionally and mentally draining day and I'm gonna have to say "over and out" for now. Hope everyone has a great night! <<hugs to all>> ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: son depressed?/online schools Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:21 AM Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online. Where is the teaching in that? If you would do that, why not call it homeschooling vs. e-schooling. I guess because someone else is grading your work? I'd take the extra time to find an e-school with live teaching if that is what is important to you. I haven't seen the other kind. Guest guest
OMG! If they were both in school!!!!! Here is how my fantasy day would go... I would first make a bagel with cream cheese, get a cup of coffee, and sit down and read the paper. Then I would pull weeds, vacuum, read a magazine, and dust my house. Then I would do laundry and enjoy the quiet of it all, while watching the news. Then I would make one lunch, whatever I felt like, and sit and read a book while eating it, talking to absolutely no one. Then I would cook dinner early, while watching some dumb TV program talk show, half paying attention, and then I would pay bills in silence, and when the kids would come home everything would be done, I would be relaxed, and they would have smiles on their faces and willingly take their belongings in their rooms (clean rooms, mind you) and nicely start their homework. I would never see a teacher, ever, and I wouldn't recognize the school phone number on any phone. As a matter of fact, my phone would never, ever ring. I wouldn't even need one. Then, they would politely assist with setting the table and we would all eat together, all the while saying nice things about each other. My husband would also make it home at 5 pm every night exactly, right as dinner started. Then, everyone would shower, smell good, and wear clean pajamas, brush their teeth, and we would all go happily to bed at 8 am, where I would continue reading my book in peace and quiet........ Guest guest
An IEP should take as long as it takes. If the school does not allow enough time then they need to reschedule.Make sure you know you rights! The procedures for IEPs are written out and you should be able to get them. They decided to have a private meeting and told us he was not eligible for any help since his medication seemed to be solving the problem! Guest guest
Fawn, Call your state's parent training center or go to yellowpagesforkids.com and look up services in your state. Every state is required to have free advocacy services available. Once you locate an advocacy organization like the Arc, call them and say you need to speak to someone about your situation. They will listen to you and work with you. They will also usually meet with you and go over your assessments or IEP/504 to ensure your childs needs are being met. Also see if there are any parent training workshops in your area and try to go to one. They will train you to advocate for yourself and help you understand the special education laws. The sooner you go this the better for your situation. ne From: Fawn Kazmierczak <lostfranklingirl@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Sort of Changed topic / WAS : son depressed?/online schools Date: Friday, February 4, 2011, 12:34 PM How did you ladies go about getting an advocate? Guest guest
I used to believe the same thing. That THEY set the time. But I learned otherwise. When I said I wanted a meeting I told them that we would have to allow at least two hours for the meeting. This way I knew I had at least that time. Also, I did an agenda and passed a copy out to everyone when I got there. That way they new what I wanted to cover and we weren't leaving until either a) we did or I decided to reschedule. That way they stay on track and don't drag their feet on subjects like behavior and there is no tiime for anything else. This has happened to us at every meeting this year. The whole meeting is discussing behavior and the Behavior Support Plan and how it is not working. (because they didn't do a proper FBA). So when it comes to academics we run out of time. I used to feel rushed and allow them to schedule it when they knew they would have to go back to class or whatever. But I got smart over the last year and don't allow myself to be bullied anymore. Get the book "All about IEPs" from slaw.com or even better "From Emotions to Advocacy" as well as "Special Education Law 2nd edition". What has been empowering for me is the knowledge I've gained and now having an advocate that I can go to when I'm unsure of something. It made such a difference at yesterdays meeting and I was able to stay focused and not get emotional. OMG! What a great feeling. I had them stuttering when I asked "So if my son were to be placed back in mainstream tomorrow how far behind would he be?" His teacher literally cringed. The director of middle schools was there this time and he was amazing. There was a lot that was being handled wrong that he didn't know about. I brought up all the suspensions, of being threatened with juvenille authorities because my son was refusing to do work, about the daily phone calls and my son spending hours in the office every day! Oh, I was polite and I was professional but I was also candid and matter of fact. I spelled it out in so many words that they have not been providing my son FAPE without actually saying it. They "got" it and the director of middle schools was very proactive and so far I got everything I asked for. I had my binder with all my documentation and when the school psychologist tried to say something to imply "oh he's not that far behind"..I pulled out all my son's assessments and started quoting percentages and scores. I'm sure she and his teacher called me a few choice words after the meeting but I don't care. I am usually very accomodating and tolerant but only to an extent. Usually when someone gets me to the point where "I'm done" then I'm truly done. I think they got that picture. Instead of me saying "Can you please send me...." or "I would like to request..." like I have been doing for years. Now it's "I'm going to need that documentation prior to the meeting in order to review it. I appreciate your assistance with my request. How soon can I expect that?" Well anyway....I use to be the biggest chicken when faced with a room full of people all there to tell me how bad my son is or how he's "just fine" academically. I use to get so anxious that my hands would shake. I was SO insecure. Now, I'm still nervous but there is much truth in the saying that knowledge is power. There is also strength in knowing you have a support network when you're unsure. This group has been amazing for me. I just hope that I can return the favor. Thank you all! To be continued.... :-) ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: son depressed?/online schools Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:21 AM Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online.
