Guest guest
Thanks Robin, I'm sure glad too. The only ones that really acted that way was the school psychologist and my son's teacher. Go figure! I have to say it was exhausting but it's been a long time coming. A lot of things needed to be dealt with and we covered a lot. We still have a ways to go though. I hate making people feel unconfortable or to put them on the spot but they pushed too far....You know how we MOMs are, don't mess with our babies!!! Guest guest
I am soooo glad your meeting went well, ne. Our meetings are usually pretty quick......but all teachers are there. Soc worker, school psych. Everyone's really nice and open and acknowledge my kids' issues. I have time to bring up all my crap.....and they are pretty darned accomodating. Sigh..... My prob is that when we leave the meeting and real life starts up again, my son still comes home (and used to for my older son) sometimes upset, frustrated, angry and sometimes heartbroken. Sure,,,,,,,unlimited test-taking time is great. But, he loses out on recess then. Sure - everyone acknowledging that he writes freakishly slow is great.......and saying that he should get notes written out and given to him ahead of time so that he can follow along better, is great.............but it isn't done consistantly. Sure....acknowledging that he has issues to where he is a follower and needs help realizing when to walk away and NOT hang with certain kids and do what THEY say is great,)it's in his IEP) but when he is still losing his recess because he hung with some naughty kids and did what he said he KNEW was wrong....what the hell?Sure,,,,,,his ways may be understood, they say,,,,,,,,but when he is still bringing Math home and hasn't a clue as to what to do........what the hell? I'm totally confused. I honestly feel good at the meetings,,,,,but deep down know that I'm probably being played..................but I don't know how to fight it or what to say. Cause,,,like I said, they acknowledge it all. Put things in place - like the longer test-times........sos skills class 1 x per week. Notes given sometimes when it's longer sutff to write. But,,,,,,he's still behind. He's still not "getting" math. He still hasn't a clue as to periods, comma's, capitals.......(and he's in 5th grade). Sigh.............. Guest guest
Robin, If your son is having trouble in math and language arts how are his grades? When was his last benchmark test and how did he do? Ask them how they are going to get your son where he needs to be in math and ask for data that he is making progress. Does he have goals on his IEP in these subjects? I know exactly what you mean about these type of meetings. Where everyone "seems" so agreeable and accommodating with great ideas, but then NOTHING ever happens or changes afterward. This is where you write a follow up letter after the meeting saying that you just wanted to follow up the meeting with a letter thanking everyone and that since so much was discussed you just want to make sure you understood everything. Then you say..." At the meeting Ms. So and so stated that she would do this or that. Will that be implemented right away and how soon can I expect an update on how things are going." etc, etc... Do this for everything that they agreed to do for your son and ask for specifics. This is your documentation then. When your son brings home math and still doesn't understand. Send the school an e-mail stating you concerns. Say something like..."At our IEP meeting two weeks ago Ms. So and so said she would do xxxx to help my son. After doing homework with him this evening I noticed that he is still having a hard time in this area. Maybe we need to have another meeting to discuss a different strategy..." It is very time consuming and can be very frustrating but this is the only way sometimes that you can make them see that you are serious that your son needs help and you will not let them just play you. I use to be afraid to do this. I didn't want to put them on the spot or get them angry at me. But you know what, they were playing me and in the process my son was suffering. Why should I be afraid of them getting angry because I'm expecting them to do their damm JOB! Hello, what is wrong with me? They didn't care if we were stressed out of our minds or that my son became suicidal. So I have stopped worrying about pissing them off. Oh, I am still very respectful and professional, although we have not always been treated this way in return, but I have no problem asking direct questions or letting them know that I don't agree with something. I have learned the hard way, unfortunately, that I cannot take for granted that these educators, principles, special ed teachers etc are going to do what they say, much less do their jobs. I have no trust or faith in the "good intentions" our schools and teachers are suppose to have. It is a very sad realization. I know there are a lot of very good teachers , principles etc out there that truly care and I appreciate them that much more. But it has been years since I have personally come across someone like that. I am sorry to sound so cynical. I'm usually not like this. But I bet if we took a poll on this site we would find an overwhelming amount of people that have had more negative experiences with schools than good. There is clearly something wrong with this picture. Ok, I will stop with my doom and gloom. I should be happy that my meeting went well...and I am. But our IEP meetings going well should be the norm for all of us, not the exception! ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: son depressed?/online schools Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:21 AM Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online. Guest guest
Thanks, ne, I'm gonna pull out his latest IEP, find out the "goals" and any strategy's (the specifics) and move forward. There is nothing in place to help him with Math because although he fails every test and gets B (beginning) and a few D's (Developing) - that's how they are rated (B, D or S (secure)) - he aces all of his homework in Math because I do it for/with him at home....one on one. If I had him do it alone, he'd be totally failing. I've told them this and they commend me on being "such a good mom". Sigh...... Guest guest
Robin, When you're checking his IEP, I just thought of something, also check how his progress is suppose to be measured on his goals. Does it say teacher observations, or teacher made tests? If it does you want this changed ASAP. It needs to say data collection or some other type of concrete method of documentation showing whether he is making progress, staying stagnet, or regressing. Ask them how they are going to measure your son's progress and how often you can expect updates as to how he is doing. Tell the teacher that you have no problem helping your son with his homework, but it is not your job to teach him math. This is their job. You are too accomodating. Tell them your son needs more one on one in order to "get it". Ask the teacher what she does in class to make sure your son has understood what he is suppose to do? I feel for you honey, but you are too nice. My son was getting As on all his math homework and classwork but failing every test. I asked his teacher how that can be. Thats when I found out that she didn't grade homework or classwork on accuracy!! Are you serious? I asked her, then how do you know if your students are learning? Especially like my son who is failing every test? She said "well I go around the classroom and check their work. I said my son is obviously not getting it because when I help him do homework I can tell. I said he needed more one on one. She said, "well I have eight special needs kids in my class". I asked her, 'well are all of them failing??" She had no answer for me. Really??!! Your son should be getting the help he needs from his teacher. Keep pushing! Good luck! ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: son depressed?/online schools Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:21 AM Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online. Guest guest
Jack is/was like that, too. I remember that until 3rd grade, he would look up at the big list of letters that teachers put up above the boards. He'd look up there when he had to write some letters. With 1st grade, if he had to write Goat, for example. He wouldn't know how to spell it, so he'd be told "g". He'd sit for a bit, then look up to the letters. Then, he's actually start at "A" and say the alphabet until he got to "g"!!!!! Once he got to "g", he would literally sit for a bit....almost like he was "impriinting" it into his mind. Now......if, 5 minutes later, he was asked to write a "g",,,,he'd have to do the same thing again. Once he got to 3rd grade and now, in 5th,,,,,,,,,,,he doesn't search for the letters, but spells everything wrong. He takes a long time to write,,,,,,,and most words are spelt phoenetically. Like, if he has to write "happy", he'll write hape. STILL!!!!! He writes "with" like "Wif". Switches a lot of his "th"'s with "f"'s. Part of me is getting really sad now that I'm writing to you guys. Another part is getting really pissed. I know he has Slow processing speed and ADHD. He doesn't understand Math,,,,,for the most part. His spelling/wriitng is horrible. So.........I tell myself that he's not the 1st one to have an LD. Right? So.......we will get through schooling the best way we can. I'll help him and help him and then the school will help as much as they can/will. Our goal will be to graduate.......and then he'll move on. Sigh........... But..............then I think, crap. He's got issues. One on one teaching would be best. He needs to come home. I know he'll be with a class next year (6th) that has a SPED person in it. The IEP peope here, have agreed that next year, getting notes given to him ahead of time would be great. BUT,,,,,I wonder how the hell he's gonna "get" math. Crap!!! I almost think he needs a one on one person......assisting him constatntly, just so he can be corrected all day.....so that he can try to catch up a bit. I feel so torn,,,,I'm in tears right now. I've helped him do all his work. Every fricken night. He turns it in DONE....and correct. But it was becasue "I" did it with/for him. He's at the lowest 10% on all State testing that they do. Dammit. What do I do....... Robin ......A rich man is not one who has the most, but who needs the least..... Where is the teaching in that? If you would do that, why not call it homeschooling vs. e-schooling. I guess because someone else is grading your work? I'd take the extra time to find an e-school with live teaching if that is what is important to you. I haven't seen the other kind. Guest guest
great ideas. I usually email them my list of concerns in advance and they come prepared with ideas - sometimes they try to dismiss but I always have a list of evidence to back up my concerns so they know I am not playing around. I also let them know I will not sign if i do not agree. Apparently they only need that signature every 3 years, so I tell them I want a review meeting at the end if I do not agree and say we need more time to work on a,b, and c and that I want my son's team outside of school to review the IEP as well if they can not make it to the meeting. From: susanne hansen <s_hansen34@...> Sent: Fri, February 4, 2011 10:20:56 PMSubject: Re: ( ) Sort of Changed topic / WAS : son depressed?/online schools I used to believe the same thing. That THEY set the time. But I learned otherwise. When I said I wanted a meeting I told them that we would have to allow at least two hours for the meeting. This way I knew I had at least that time. Also, I did an agenda and passed a copy out to everyone when I got there. That way they new what I wanted to cover and we weren't leaving until either a) we did or I decided to reschedule. That way they stay on track and don't drag their feet on subjects like behavior and there is no tiime for anything else. This has happened to us at every meeting this year. The whole meeting is discussing behavior and the Behavior Support Plan and how it is not working. (because they didn't do a proper FBA). So when it comes to academics we run out of time. I used to feel rushed and allow them to schedule it when they knew they would have to go back to class or whatever. But I got smart over the last year and don't allow myself to be bullied anymore. Get the book "All about IEPs" from slaw.com or even better "From Emotions to Advocacy" as well as "Special Education Law 2nd edition". What has been empowering for me is the knowledge I've gained and now having an advocate that I can go to when I'm unsure of something. It made such a difference at yesterdays meeting and I was able to stay focused and not get emotional. OMG! What a great feeling. I had them stuttering when I asked "So if my son were to be placed back in mainstream tomorrow how far behind would he be?" His teacher literally cringed. The director of middle schools was there this time and he was amazing. There was a lot that was being handled wrong that he didn't know about. I brought up all the suspensions, of being threatened with juvenille authorities because my son was refusing to do work, about the daily phone calls and my son spending hours in the office every day! Oh, I was polite and I was professional but I was also candid and matter of fact. I spelled it out in so many words that they have not been providing my son FAPE without actually saying it. They "got" it and the director of middle schools was very proactive and so far I got everything I asked for. I had my binder with all my documentation and when the school psychologist tried to say something to imply "oh he's not that far behind"..I pulled out all my son's assessments and started quoting percentages and scores. I'm sure she and his teacher called me a few choice words after the meeting but I don't care. I am usually very accomodating and tolerant but only to an extent. Usually when someone gets me to the point where "I'm done" then I'm truly done. I think they got that picture. Instead of me saying "Can you please send me...." or "I would like to request..." like I have been doing for years. Now it's "I'm going to need that documentation prior to the meeting in order to review it. I appreciate your assistance with my request. How soon can I expect that?" Well anyway....I use to be the biggest chicken when faced with a room full of people all there to tell me how bad my son is or how he's "just fine" academically. I use to get so anxious that my hands would shake. I was SO insecure. Now, I'm still nervous but there is much truth in the saying that knowledge is power. There is also strength in knowing you have a support network when you're unsure. This group has been amazing for me. I just hope that I can return the favor. Thank you all! To be continued.... :-) ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: son depressed?/online schools Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:21 AM Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online. Guest guest
Oh ... You poor thing....having to see a grandbaby and in such horrible conditions. he he. Hope you had a wonderful time!!!!! I love the snow, actually. I love knowing that snow is coming. I get all "nesty" and "prepared". And once it's snowing, the feeling of looking out when it's all warm inside. Ahhhhhhh..........I love it. I feel the same when a storm is coming in the spring/summer, too. Aside from the "end of driveway snowplow crap" that I hate, I absolutely hate that when you walk inside my house, you don't see a mudroom. Just like, 8 pairs of boots laying strewn on wet, dirty rugs. If you happen to be able to jump over the rugs and boots, I hope-to-God that you don't land in melted snow (water) and wipe out on your back. Sigh.................................... It seems like you deal more than enough with the school, so let him have a chance too.
