Guest guest
My son has recently been diagnosed with Aspergers. He is not on any meds for the Aspergers yet. Matter of fact they are still going through the finishing process of the testing. My question is he has major stomach issues, such as chronic constipation, and weight loss. His doctor said Aspergers can be related. Has anyone heard of this before? He is 13, almost 14, he has many other health impairments as well too including Type 1 insulin dependant diabetes, and thyroid disease. The doctor wanted him on Zoloft today along with other meds for the other conditions but due to some of the stories of teens becoming suicidal on antidepressants, I really do not want to put him on them. Have any of your children been on antidepressants? What about the stomach issues? He is being worked up for those right now. Its strange because the more I read about Aspergers, the madder I am at myself for not realizing something wasn't right before. Although, I knew he was different, I just could not pinpoint it. Thanks for any of your help, Darla
Guest guest
try not to be mad. We are lucky in some ways to have these labels today so we can learn about them. Years ago if you were different they just cast people off. My husband is an undiagnosed aspie. We know it to be true and he won't be diagnosed. We also think his mom and some others in his family might have it and they probably don't have an idea and would argue with us. At least you are calm and excepting it and not fighting to deny this new information. Remember we are all colored in our own personalities on top of whatever label we might get so he will seem more "normal" sometimes and more weird others and that is ok.From: Darla F <darlalindenmayer@...>Subject: ( ) Newly diagnosed 13 yr old with multiple issues Date: Wednesday, September 1, 2010, 10:29 PM My son has recently been diagnosed with Aspergers. Guest guest
We do have our daughter on zoloft to address anxiety and depression and it really did help. With her there have not been any side effects. We started on the zoloft at 12mg and at each increase (about 1 month apart) I made sure there was not any worsening of anxiety, depression or agitation. It has helped a lot. Is it possible the diabetes is causing the weight loss? Has he been tested for food allergies, celtic disease (wheat allergy)? What does the endocronologist say about the stomach issues and weight loss. I would work closely with this doctor or find one that is willing to help with this. If the doctors suspect anxiety is at the cause of weight loss, then perhaps the zoloft is a good place to start. There are other medications given sometimes to AS kids like rispedal or abilify when the child is acting out, hitting themselves or others. But the side effects are more of a concern especially tardive kineses (movements, jerks). Many kids gain a lot of weight on rispedal too much. I would not use rispedal to gain weight. It should be used for major emotional problems. best of luck, Pam > > My son has recently been diagnosed with Aspergers. He is not on any meds for the Aspergers yet. Guest guest
My dd was on Paxil and then Abilify. I was able to pull her off the pharmas with enzyme therapy and antimicrobes. She is also chronically constipated, which we manage with magnesium and occasional Oxypowder (expensive but effective). She had chronic head and stomachaches, which totally resolved with enzymes. She was also a Pandas kid, misdiagnosed with ocd and tourette's for 7 years. Don't beat yourself up about the delay. Many Aspies go into the teens before they are properly diagnosed. Try some of the protocols discussed on the lists, and you may be able to avoid the pharmas. On a sidenote, if you do try pharmas, both Paxil and Abilify caused tremendous weight gain for my daughter (several years back). Since your son is underweight, the side effect might be a blessing in your case. Good luck, Darla ( ) Newly diagnosed 13 yr old with multiple issues My son has recently been diagnosed with Aspergers.
