Guest guest
Hi Everyone, We are new to GAPS. We have a 5 year old son that have been diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis a year ago. (EE for short). We have been on elimination diet with some success yet not enough to get rid of the entire symptoms. We now are planning for GAPs diet which makes a lot of sense from what we have read so far. He is an exteremely picky eater and has been having rough time in school allready with his current diet and we are having hard time planning his launch during intro stage. We were wondering if anyone in the group has any experience with eosinophilic esophagitis and went through the GAPS diet. We would like to hear your comments / experience and any tips that would help us. Thank you for your responses in advance. Hatice & Seylan Daspinar. Now that's room service! Guest guest
Dear SeylanWelcome! My son Asher also has eosinophilic esophagitis. We have done a modified version of the GAPS diet with success. My EE son is now 7. He was diagnosed with EE at 18 months, but started having symptoms at age 8 weeks (not at birth). Asher has a very severe case of EE. We tried eliminating the top 8 allergens plus all the things to which he tested positive on the skin prick, skin patch, and blood tests. That didn't work. Then we took him off food completely (!) and forced him to drink this nasty tasting medical formula (Elecare Vanilla) for 100% of his nutrition (no food at all!). If you read the SCD book, you notice that the SCD diet is pre-Elecare and Neocate. So rather than do the SCD diet, you're better off using one of the new medical formulas - either Elecare or Neocate. Going medical formula only lowered the eosinophil count on the biopsies (didn't remove them completely), but caused a lot more issues for Asher. My belief is that even though the medical formula was giving him a 100% nutritionally complete diet, his impaired gi tract wasn't able to obtain all the nutrients, so he was mal-nourished. Not to mention, Asher failed every single food trial. Apple caused an analphylactic reaction even though the allergy tests (all of them) were negative. I can go on, but you get it.The thing that really turned things around for Asher (your son's case may be different) is going to an integrative medicine doctor and testing his blood, stool, and urine. We found he had the bacteria MRSA in his gut. Once we treated the MRSA, he was a different kid. He hasn't failed a food trial since. But now back to the GAPS diet...GAPS uses a lot of dairy and nuts, which I'm too nervous to try. In fact, the GAPS diet has a lot of things I'm too nervous to try. However, the broths are great. Asher loves them and they're really good for him. We do the pro-biotics and the supplements - I believe that's helped a lot. Feel free to ask me any questions - here or offline. I'm happy to help.Big hugs,On Sat, Feb 12, 2011 at 6:27 PM, Seylan Daspinar <sdaspinar@...> wrote: Hi Everyone, We are new to GAPS. Guest guest
Hi , I just also saw one of your posts asking about enzymes. We found http://www.transformationenzymes.com/ that these enyzmes were suggested by Dr Lipski. Dr Fuller who is the founder of the company cured her daugher of EG with her enzymes before she founded the company. We did some research and there are no fillers or any alergens in them. I hope this helps to you in your research. We are also using probiotic from Kirkman brand. Dr Bock who is a very known Dan Doctor for Autism is a contributer of this probiotic. We will try Dr Natasha's probiotic during our GAPS. For now we are preparing my son with Cod Liver Oil and he seems to be somewhat Ok with it. Seylan. Hi Everyone, We are new to GAPS.
