I cured myself from arthritis when I was 26. I was on the candida diet (very similar to GAPS). I stopped eating all wheat and all forms of sugar.I don't know about dates... I'm waiting for my copy of the book, too.

Hey, thanks so much for your reply....was your arthritis very bad

before you cured it? Because mine is just getting worse and worse and

it's scaring me. I used to have Candida too, and I also don't eat

wheat, (hmmmm, maybe we're onto something here!) but I have been

eating other grains like corn, and of course I love potatoes. So

that's where this diet will be even more restrictive for me than what

I was already doing.

Dates are okay as long as they don't have syrups added to them. Sometimes it's hard to know whether something has been added. In general, the book says that the dates that don't stick together are okay (like Medjool dates). We buy dates at our local coop that are kind of sticky but the produce people swear there is nothing added, I don't know for sure.

Chocolate powder is not okay on the diet.

I think Dr. Natasha said at the conference that her next book is going to be about how to use the diet to heal all sorts of autoimmune problems (including rheumatoid arthritis), so it's definitely not just for kids and "psychological" issues (which she says are gut issues anyway). I am becoming convinced that gut dysbiosis is at the root of most health problems!

It was so bad that the pain would wake me up at night. It started in my knees and was spreading to my elbows and fingers.ARe you sure you don't still have candida? How did you cure it?

Well when I had candida really bad I really could not function, I had

so many symptoms (but NOT arthritis at the time) and the brain fog was

so bad. So I guess I figured I didn't have it anymore because all

those symptoms that I did have went away. I went on a sugar free,

wheat free diet also, and I took antifungals, and I did metals

dextoxes, and I basically changed my life over to the Weston Price

diet. The difference it made was life changing for sure. But now I

have arthritis despite all that, so it's puzzling to me, but obviously

my body is telling me I still have some work to do on my health. So

maybe I still do have some Candida remnants.

Thanks so much, this was very helpful and reassuring to me. I'm glad

she is expanding in her next book.

Did you take high doses of probiotics when you were working to clear up your candida? When was this? Are you doing anything that might be killing off your good bacteria (i.e., birth control pill, antibiotics, drinking tap water)?

Candida can resurface. It happened to me when my doctor put me on the birth control pill earlier this year. Within a couple of months, many of my old symptoms started coming back. You have to add massive doses of good bacteria to get them to colonize -- and then you have to maintain them. But you can't just eat maintenance doses of probiotics (kefir, sauerkraut or over the counter probiotics) if the yeast has grown out of control. You have to take very high doses for a while until the yeast is under control -- then you can just do the maintenance dose.

I hope that makes sense!Ann Marie

Yep, I did, and still do, take lots of probiotics, both the " food "

kinds, and also I take EM (efficient microbes--a liquid probiotic)

everyday. At the time I did a ton of them from Garden of Life,

can't remember the name but their standard one. Now I just do the

EM, and sauerkraut, etc, but I ordered the Biokult. I DID do birth

control pills for many years, and I'm sure that's one of the things

that caused it in the first place. We do have a water filter. But,

I do know enough about Candida to know that it very well could have

returned, maybe I wasn't being careful enough with my diet and I was

probably letting too many not-so-good things sneak in since I was

feeling better. Well, this GAPS diet is very restrictive, and I am

already mourning my sprouted corn tortilla tacoes, and my raw cream

and kefir, but I will give it my best and take the Biokult and we'll

see what happens! Thanks for pointing out that it could be the

return of Candida, you're probably right.

Well I don't think it will take you very long to kick it. The key for candida is VERY high doses of probiotics. The good bacteria colonize and then they can attack the yeast. They have to overpower it and they can't do that until they have large masses (colonization).

I have also heard good things about Candex, an enzyme specifically for candida. Also Donna Gates recommends a green drink specifically designed to heal the gut.Just some ideas. Let us know how you do.

Thanks--I will! The arthritis at this time is more than just pain, it

is also large bony overgrowths on my wrists, knuckles, knees, and

feet, and this has happened only over about 6 months time. My hands

look like I'm about 80 and I'm only 40! So I really hope that if it's

candida or if it's something else that is causing the arthirtis, I

hope the diet and whole program will make a difference either way with

the arthritis. I'm trying to cover all my bases.

Suze, could you tell me how you plan to make the sodas without whey? has suggested using kraut juice as a starter, just wondering if there are other possibilities too. I've only ever used whey, which is out right now... Thanks,

RE: [ ] Re: Dates OK? and Arthritis

I don’t know of any other inexpensive GAPS-legal probiotic drink other than lacto-fermented sodas made with honey, which I’m going to start making this weekend.

Hi Sara,

I suffered with arthritis as well and thought it was all related to wheat. Then I went in to my NP's office for some testing with an allergy frequency machine and it turned out to be corn! I am allergic to the two molds that grow on the surface of all corn, even organic. I eliminated that and whalla, no more arthritis symptoms. Who knew!
