Guest guest
Please tell me you're taking copious notes on all the incidents and asking the school for copies of their incident reports. You need documentation. This latest incident should get you a functional behavior assessment if you don't already have one. The school/teachers obviously missed all the triggers before your son snapped and poped someone. It could have even been a result of unresolved issues from days or weeks before if the school is not catching what's happening on a daily basis. Ask for an iep meeting with a behaviorist and tell them you want that meeting tomorrow or Thursday at the latest. Bring in your documentation and ask them how they plan to help your son and keep other children safe. Btw, get a copy of your school's bullying policy and read it. Bring that to the meeting, too. Unless there were witnesses, the school will likely tell you they didn't see the bullying. Be prepared for that. Consider having your son write down on paper or the computer how he's bullied and you bring that to the iep meeting you've asked for due to the latest incident. Guest guest
This is a great idea! He should not be suspended or punished. There should be a behaviorist involved in this. Usally schools assign an aide at recess and lunch when incidents like this happen. Your son needs a supportive setting to cope and stay regulated. Guest guest
maybe it will end the bullying? Taste of their own medicine. We wanted our boy to stand up for himself - he is sensitive and geeky- he went a bit overboard though - he definitely won the fight with a kid that always hits other kids. I can understand how he couldn't take it anymore (and the chemical that triggers rage was also still in his system for a trial). Guest guest
I'm not sure why you would conclude he is depressed because he punched a bully. To me, that is a natural response after a continued problem that nobody else has managed to handle. I'd pop the bully one too. Roxanna Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again. Guest guest
I've been wondering if depressed because easily provoked to rage (especially with additives in his system) and a natural chemical that blocks serotonin that makes me depressed makes him rage. The long-term bullying and lack of friends makes him sad and angry. 2 key bullies have backed off (1 after I talked to him) and another steps up to the plate to have a go (but my boy definitely won that fight - he was really mad and fought back as had a chemical in his system still) He is refusing to go to school today - he is fearful of more attack and getting in trouble. We are telling him that word will get around of what happened and if they have any brains they will leave him alone. Guest guest
My son came out of class crying. His teacher came out too looking concerned. She managed to tell me the boys were fighting in class. Then my son grabbed the other child but the collar and slugged him 3 or 4 times - hard. After he calmed down, he said the other boy had pushed him, hit him and called him a crybaby (because cried - he gets called a crybaby a lot). I phoned school to see if allowed to come in. they said yes and still investigating. My child is refusing to go as fearful of further trouble. Waiting for phone call back from school Miranda > > > > > > > > > > > My 7 year old flew into a rage after getting bullied (yet again) and > > > punched the other child in the face several times. Guest guest
Agreed! This has happened with my son on SEVERAL occasions. Before we could get someone to pay attention, he was written off as the BAD kid, and scapegoated anytime something went wrong. Now that he’s in a good school, with people who PAY ATTENTION, when this happens, we ALL know that was pushed to his absolute breaking point. You can’t punish a child for hitting their breaking point. I completely understand the “panic†you must’ve felt in having to weather that news… but know that your boy was doing the only thing he had the capacity TO do at that point. I wouldn’t panic too much. Can you talk to your school about an education session on Asperger’s Syndrome? In ’s school, the “elementary†kids (Grade 4, 5 and 6) do most things together… activities, eat lunch together, etc… so we had it with them. The principal was involved, but I gave a presentation to the kids about Asperger’s, and also purchased a DVD (Coulter Video “Intricate Mindsâ€) to share with the students. It has made a HUGE difference in their understanding and acceptance of . I have been there, done that, SO many times. So talk to me anytime   I think our boys are lucky, believe it or not, because they OUTWARDLY (even if wrongly in our eyes) show us when they can’t cope anymore. I’d rather have them be outward, than turn inward and try to cope without the necessary skills to do so. THAT is when I’d be worried about depression !!! =) From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of RoxannaSent: Tuesday, June 15, 2010 7:38 PM Subject: Re: ( ) son snapped and bashed another child I'm not sure why you would conclude he is depressed because he punched a bully. Guest guest
I actually agree with you both. At least my son gets his anger out of his system, not bottling it all up like I did (while being a compliant child) and then suffered from anxiety and depressive disorder. On positive note, the school acknowledged that both boys lacked social skills and both did the wrong thing and are getting identical punishments (a school detention). Other boy's mother was upset her boy got punched, but he started it. " Fair and square " as my father would say. Also he seems to have gained new respect. When we finally got to school, a boy that used to bully him greeted him in friendly manner and patted him on the shoulder as if to say, " well done " Miranda > > Agreed! > > > > This has happened with my son on SEVERAL occasions. Guest guest
well today more drama. He had a tiff with his 1 friend so hit under slide because upset. A girl went up to him and said she was going to dob him in so he hit her. He was like a cornered wild animal and his perception is distorted. He doesn't have good regulation of emotions. Plus he gets angry when have food chemicals that make me depressed. Guest guest
When someone is very stressed they will rage. In kids depression shows up as being very irritable. Many AS kids and anxious kids are more the type to avoid more stimulation when scared or provoked. Or if they hit is is to push someone away. But some kids have the type of regulation issues where they don't retreat when overstimulated or anger but they lash out or argue or break things etc. This kind of behavior is also shared with kids with ADHD. Regarding school avoidance. Get him back at least half a day. IF you can pick him up for recess and lunch do that if you need to rather than have him stay home. I had to use these strategies to keep my daughter in school. If he won't go to recess/lunch don't force him, you can advocate that he has an alternative setting for both. You may need to get a therapist involved to help you advocate for this. Schools do not want to provide extra services if they aren't forced. Guest guest
he does hate school (after months of being bullied). I agree that most of his rage is because of school. I don't think home schooling would be healthy for either of us as I have AS too and would feel trapped with him 24/7 and I don't think I am good role model for gaining social skills. Plus I need to get a job (currently out of work) - we've been struggling financially because of all my health issues etc over years (made worse by stress, and having an AS child like mine that loses the plot regularly is stressful). Guest guest
I posted too soon too, Things got worse - punched a girl went felt cornered like frightened animal Miranda > > > > Agreed! > > > > > > > > =) > > > > > > > > From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Roxanna > > Sent: Tuesday, June 15, 2010 7:38 PM > > > > Subject: Re: ( ) son snapped and bashed another child > > > > > > > > > > > > I'm not sure why you would conclude he is depressed because he punched a bully. We had long weekend and I did a test run of a chemical in a drink (to try and get timeframe right). Unfortunately, it took longer to get out of his system. Guest guest
Ideally, I would like him to go for half a day. Is that realistic long term? My son has both anxiety and ADHD features. The medications would have opposite effects? I know he gets overwhelmed by sensory stimulation plus he is very rigid thinker - both reasons he gets easily frustrated. Also has auditory processing disorder and tic disorder Mirand > > > > > > I'm not sure why you would conclude he is depressed because he punched a bully. Guest guest
Have you thought of sending him to a private school? I was at private school one year, and because it was so small I did well. On 6/16/10 6:55 PM, " miranda.flemming " <miranda.flemming@...> wrote: he does hate school (after months of being bullied).
