You might try the drug for another week, but if you aren't getting any

improvement in behavior, then the stimulant approach to his attentional issues

probably isn't the right, and I would move on. The behavioral symptoms

(attention, OCD, etc) these kids have are not typical, and their response to

meds is often different as well. In general there is a lot of trial and error

involved with psychiatric meds. Start researching the meds on your own, and

don't rely only on the doctor.

I'm new to this group, and we don't have an official Aspergers diagnosis yet but we think that's where we're headed. My son is in first grade. We currently have ADHD & ODD diagnosis, but have had meltdowns in school this year on the Vyvanse which we didn't have before since he started on the generic Ritalin. We did some research and talking to a bunch of people and it was suggested we use the Ritalin in conjunction with Clonidine, which is a blood pressure medication but has been found to help with the meltdowns of Aspergers better than the Ritalin, which appears to address attention & focus more than the hyperactivity and outbursts. We've had good success over the past month, and have had only two visits to the principal's office, whereas it was getting to be almost daily before. Good luck!

Hi Patty:I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time right now. But I can relate, so hang in there, you're not alone! My son (8) has been on Vyvanse 30 mg for a little over a year now, and it's been working very well for him. However, he is also on Luvox as an antidepressant. My sense is that the Vyvanse works well for 's ADHD but it does not treat his OCD or anxiety, and he has a lot of both. had a lot of the unhappy/depressed/anxiety signs that you are describing, and the Luvox helps a lot. We've also added Omega-3 supplements to his diet and that helps with his mood as well.Hope this helps you. Hang in there!PattiFrom: Patty <sheridonsmom@...> Sent: Tue, November 16, 2010 11:17:29 PMSubject: ( ) Vyvanse experience anyone?

Hi All,

my son who just turned 7 switched from Adderral 20 mgs to Vyvanse (longer acting) 40 mgs last week. Teachers were not seeing any improvements for the three weeks he was taking the Adderral and now I'll need to get their feedback on the new Vyvanse med. Has anyone else experienced their child having heightened emotions and meltdowns on this drug? At first I thought the Adderral was wearing off just at the time he was coming home from school but found out last week that the teachers had not seen any improvement at all either so maybe the stimulant is just not the right choice for him. It does not seem to calm him down which I believe is the outcome we would hope for with the stimulant- to have the opposite effect than it would have on a typical person? I don't know where the Dr will go next... I left her a message this evening after more volatile behavior from Blaise. Has anyone else had this happen? If so what med did

the Dr try next? Could it be a sedative type med or an antidepressant? Teachers are saying he is very negative at school so maybe he is depressed- he's not a happy boy much at all I'm very sad to say...he can get excited about a new toy (his birthday was last week) and then wants another new toy, wants to spend all his b-day money right away and then is angry when he doesn't have any money left. He is never satisfied with what he has. There is just no reasoning with him at all- everything is a foot stamping violent outburst or sobbing cyring incident. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am getting pretty depressed over the whole situation myself, I hardly want to come home from work knowing what is in store for me when I arrive.

Thanks everyone. Patty and I have Sheridon 8 RTS and Blaise 7 Spitfire/ASD

my son (9yr old) takes 20mg vyvanse and 2mg intuniv; we're actually cutting

back to 1/2 dose on the vyvanse and hope to cut out all meds soon as we moved my

son to a much better school with more support.

Hi Patti,

I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. I just wanted to give you my experience in hopes it might help you. My Aspie son, now 13, never did well on stimulant meds. From kindergarden to 5th grade he was put on Ritalin, then Concerta, then Adderall, varying the doses and times of day he received them along the way. None of them worked and some even seemed to make him worse, especially when they wore off. When he got to 5th grade we got a new dr that was like in his late 70s and had been treating AS children for over 30 years. He told us AS kids do not do well on stimulants and he changed his medication to Stratera. He also added Zoloft for his depression and anxiety. It was amazing how it worked, at least until about a year ago. It seemed to start making him more aggitated and arguementative. We finally, just last week, convinced his dr to try him on Vyvanse. He is also still on the Zoloft and resperidon. He is only taking 20 mg in the morning

right now and will increase to 40 after two weeks. So far we have seen an improvement. Not sure if it is actually the Vyvanse or him no longer being on Stratera yet. I am hopeful though.

All I can say is that AS kids almost always have compounding issues, like ADHD, sensory issues, anxiety etc. It is difficult to treat all symptoms with just one medication. It is always a constant trial and error between medications, dosages, suppliments, diet etc. Something might work for a while and then they grow or their bodies change like my son going through puberty now and you have to start over. I hope you find the right combination to help your son. Omega 3 and melatonin suppliments can help many kids. I recommend do your own research and continue to ask other parents. With our children and desciding on medication you often have to weight the pros with the cons. Good luck and keep us posted.:)ne
