Guest guest
My son does both - he frequently covers his ears when something is too loud for him, but at other times, he will shout over the sound (often music) that he finds too loud. I would say that he tends to cover his ears for sudden sounds and loudly talk over background noise like music. It seems like for a lot of sensory related behaviors it is pretty common for kids to be inconsistent (such as those who are both sensory seekers and avoiders). Guest guest
For my son (AS/ADHD, age 8), it really depends on the noise and the setting. For really loud noises in open spaces (think fireworks) my son acts like yours.... covers ears, gets anxious tries to hide. In a more closed setting (movie theater, crowded store, crowded room) he becomes over-excited and extremely loud. For him I think its all about sensitivity to space. If he feels like he's drowning with nowhere to go (in an enclosed place) he's more prone to be loud, I think in some ways, so people will give him space to breathe. ( ) question about noise and hyperverbal???? My son and I joined a social skills group. The adults meet in one room, children in the other. Most of the parents report that when their children experience high volume of noise (in crowds or such) that their children become even louder or over excited. I was the ONLY parent that reported my son hids, covers his ears and becomes extremely anxious. Which is more typical??? I thought aspergers kids can't tolerate noise? Also most of the kids were hyperverbal. My son is hypoverbal ... if that is a word ... Is hypoverbal common with aspergers or hyperverbal? Just wondering? Guest guest
I second what Bridget said. My son is sensory seeking and avoiding depending on the situation. in Colorado > > > > My son and I joined a social skills group.
