From what I have recently learned, many people can be mis-diagnosed with ADHD

because Asperger's has similar attention like problems. I think one difference

with Aspergers vs. ADHD is that that Aspergers kids are distracted inwardly

(self focused) while ADHD kids are distracted from external stimuli. So, as far

as my son goes, we have a hard time getting his attention and then keeping it

focused on what we are trying to tell him or get him to do. ADHD kids are

distracted by all the things going on around them. Concentration may also be a

problem with Aspergers because they may have problems with short-term memory or

they are just plain not interested in the topic at hand. When I try to get my

son to repeat a couple of things I have just told him (so I know he

understands), it may seem like he has not concentrated because he has difficulty

remembering the 2nd and 3rd thing I told him. Again, he may not concentrating

on he feels is not important to him. A lot of it can be a motivation problem.

In our experience with our 18 yr. old ds, it seems he also had add (attention deficit disorder) along with the asperger's.

Don't know first hand if most aspies have add, but thinking they do.

Although not necessarily needed for the DX of AS many kids with

AS have executive function disorders. Sometimes also a non verbal

learning disability.

There are so excellent books on executuve function disorder and

school accomodations and also on NLD.

Kids with ADHD also have executive function disorders. Some kids

with ADHD have social skill issues in that they are very intrusive

and impulsive. Kids with AS usually miss social clues completely

and miss how others think.

Kids with ADHD will reach out to other kids. AS kids probably

won't (it is part of the DX fails to initiate converstations).

I think they are distinct disoders but both can have executuve

function disorders(disorganized, inattentive, slow processing).

My Asperger son doesn't have attention problems at all, but he still needs

accommodations for attention because of the way he doesn't read situations and

follow the flow etc.

Where do you go to test for this? This sounds just like my kid and my hubby. I want to pursue this. Thanks

Neuropyschologists do a full neuropsychological test. It takes

about 4 sessions at 2 hours each. Then they write a report.

It is much more than an IQ test. And it is much more than

a test for attentional issues. You will have an excellent

idea of all cognitive strengths and weaknesses normalized

with standard scores. So if your child is below average

you know exactly how serious the issue is.

I had no idea my daughter had a standard score in the bottom

10% in attention and switching mindset and processing WOW.

What a deficit yet her cognitive reasoning scores placed her

above average.

This is what they often mean by kids with Asperger's have

cognitive splits. Very high areas with very low areas.

But not all do so don't worry. Some don't have this

issues at all.
