Did any of you experience your child being so smart when they were young (3 or 4) that they could fool the "experts"???

For those who have AS diagnosis' for their much younger children (before Kinder), how did you get that diagnosis and what did you see??

After the meeting at the school district yesterday, I have to admit I am questioning myself and wondering if I am trying to place something on my daughter that isn't really there.....

It is so frustrating. Moms have to become the experts to try tofigure things out and get treatment. And it can be expensive ortime consuming looking for services that fit budgets or insurance plans. So many of us go through this, because when kids are youngthey often manage to pass classes and AS kids usually are notbehavior problems. Here are some things you can do to make a case for AS. You can get a neuropsycological evaluation. He is at the rightage now at age 9 to do this. So many many tests are doneon how he reads facial experession and lots of tests on executivefunction. Has he had an IQ test? There are a few subscores that tell youinteresting things, like is his processing speed slow, doeshe have a deficit in working memory. A neuropyschological testcan sort out many learning issues that the school academictests will never find. Is he slow at doing work, because he is

working slow, is weak in motor or organization skills, is he perfectionizing, redoing and restarting, does he get frustrated easily? AS kids will have some kid of obsessive behavior. It is partof the critieria for diagnosis. This can be repeating the samequestion, touching, lining up, telling information without regard to others interest in one particular area.Does your son have anxiety or hyperactivity? When a child's issues are not obvious than often Moms have to get to be experts or else our kids continue to suffer.I think it is good that you are reaching out to groups to figure out what is going on.Pam>> I will try to keep this as short as possible, but I

may end up writing a book, sorry in advance! My son who is 9 has been seen by 2 neurologist and has been dx with ADHD, I feel that he may have AS but no one is taking me serious, I keep being told that because he can talk and use his Imagination that there is nothing wrong with him other than the ADHD. He has a lot of emotional issues and seems to act more like a 6 yr old than a child his age...I have been fighting to get him some proper help since he was 3 and I seem to be getting nothing. The school system sucks and tells me that because he has passing grades that he dose not qualify for services, although the teacher must always stand over him or cut his work in half to get anything finished. He can't even complete fun projects in the class such as making Christmas ornaments. I am so pissed off at the world right now! (Sorry for the language). I just feel so alone and like people look at me like one of those crazy moms who is making things up about

my child. I am only 27 and maybe that has something to do with not getting the respect and answers I need, but no matter anyones age if a child needs help they should get it. We have meeting with the school on the 13th so we will see what comes of that, but I feel it will not be much seeing how they sent a letter to me and judging from that I feel we may be going to court or something. If anyone else is have this issue or could help please let me know. Thanks for listening to me rant! Hope I get all this "fixed" real soon.>

Pamela,

I am very interested in your answer for my 7 year old. But how do you get a neuropsychological test done? I've asked my Ped, my son's psychiatrist, went to another psy to ask him, the school won't do one, and I"m stuck. Can you relate what steps you did? I think it's the missing assessment I need to finally let the school know the depth of Dylan's problems.

Thanks,

Cathleen

Cathleen, I don't know about where you are, but where I am can cause issues if it isn't an "education based" assessment. I have been told (about 10 times yesterday) that yes my daughter could have Aspergers, but she may not need services at school cause she may not have an "educational need".....

Hello Carolyn,

Do you think she has an educational need? I don't understand these schools (budget i guess) that get away with doing the little possible, testing, accommodations, for our kids that need substantial help. Sorry, I know there are a lot of great schools out there, I'm just a little mad at ours right now.

Well, I have heard two different answers to this :) The school says that not all autistic/aspergers children have an educational need. However, I have heard from other therapists that all children with autism and aspergers do need to have accomodations and supports within the school system. If you look at my daughters testing there is a fairly large disparity in the things she does well, she tests at the top of the range for things and on the same test she tests at the bottom of the normal range for things, unfortunately because she tests so high in some areas it evens everything else out..... I was actually told by the preschool principal that in preschool the "least restrictive environment" would be in the home setting. I have a little girl who will turn four in about

1.5 weeks, she can sometimes count to four, but it is very inconsistent and if you change the objects up on her (add different colors) or change how she is to count things, she can't do it. She does not know her ABC's and they showed me a handwriting sample of hers that was a joke (her S in her name was a bunch of scribbled circles). She knows her shapes, but cannot draw anything but a circle. I definitely think there is a need, but they are convinced that there is not....

Just wondering why you are trying to reenter?? I am starting to wonder if I want her to enter at all.....CarolynFrom: jdarawi <jenniferdarawi@...> Sent: Sat, January 8, 2011 8:40:29 PMSubject: ( ) Re: ?Confused mom?

Hi Carolyn,

Our daughter was diagnosed with Asperger's by a neurologist when she was almost 4. I can understand you're questioning yourself, as I've done the same thing at different points. Even fairly recently, as she can have some very good periods, where I think she is so much better than before. That has deteriorated again, and I am more convinced than ever that AS is a good diagnosis for her.

At age 3-4, she had a lot of Sensory processing issues. Once I learned about this, I took her for private OT. But I didn't think that was the whole picture. She had a lot of tantrums, but also, a lot of difficulty with social interactions and having to have things a certain way. Socially, she often refused to answer people, and would stomp her feet, flail her body and start screaming when people (from church she saw weekly) approached her. She had to have certain things the same way, like arm rests down in the van, exiting through the front door of the van inside of the door near her seat. Very rigid about a lot of things. She was very particular about listening to music from infancy, choosing her favorites. The more I read about AS, the more it seemed to fit.

I read the "Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome" and typed up how I thought the different criteria for AS applied to her. I brought it with me and presented it to the neurologist. He diagnosed her from the first visit. He said we didn't need to see a psychologist, he was sure of the diagnosis. I didn't have such good results from school. They used the same info, plus their testing, and refused to label her with ASD, but kept the Early Childhood Developmental Delay label. They didn't think she had obsessive tendencies that affected her "AT School". That was the big thing that was hard for me to prove.

Now we are trying to re-enter school, after 1.5 years homeschooling. Her MET/IEP is Monday. Now the reports are suggesting 2 other possibilities to why she wouldn't qualify for ASD "At school".

I hope that helps you,

I can relate to your story. I am interested and confused why they wouldn't accept the neuropsychological results. A doctor is a doctor. I am wondering now if I need to find out from my school whether they would accept one. Do you think your school will provide adequate testing? Ours did not. Sounds to me (and I'm no expert) that your daughter needs more services than a handwriting class. Is the testing being done for an upcoming IEP? What are her other issues at school?

Wow, this sounds so familiar. I have an AS just turned 8 yr old daughter. I had her sit through 8+ hours of neuropsychological testing. I was told by my school district they wouldn't take it because the DR. isn't a LSSP. So, they did their own testing and I was told by the school psyh that she most probably won't qualify for services. Yes, she is a A student, but also has anxiety, ADHD,and can't write where it is legible. She is in habdwriting class thats it. I could go on and on. We continue to wait on the school district to give us our final ARD. Cathleen, the answer to this really depends on the school. Some school districts will accept physician diagnosis' hands down with no issue, but far too many are not willing to because it is not "educationally based". It makes me sad that the schools are fighting us so hard. I keep thinking that we are supposed to be working for the patient's good not for their pocketbooks....

Seems they are still getting all her test results together.> >> > I will try to keep this as short as possible, but I may end up writing a book, > >sorry in advance! When you get a private assessment done ask the dr for a "psycho-educational evaluation". Then they usually accept it. At least that is what I'm told. That is what our district calls theirs as well. ne
