I find this very fasinating that thyroid causes anxiety attacks. I am on 2 meds one in the morning ( Lexapro ) and 1 at night ( Elavyl) so I can get through the day and then get some sleep at night.

I was diagnosed with Post traumatic Stess Syndrome and Agoraphoba and somethng about germs. I hate going to the store or any where crowded and I have quit driving all together because I get so anxious and have panic attacks.

I have hypothiroidism but was never told this culd cause the anxiety.

I am only happy in my own home or my moms otherwise I am very anxious and can't wait to get back in my house.

Maybe I should check with my doc about the thyroid?

There

are medications that target panic attacks. I take Remeron every night to avoid

them. One type of Remeron is a soltab that dissolves in your mouth. The real

ones work great and taste good too. The generic version doesn’t work for

me and it tastes terrible. Even if it worked I don’t know how long I could

put up with the taste! It is also available in pill form.

Even though my son is only 7, he has full blown anxiety and I have been considering putting him on an SSRI. My psychiatrist only wants to address the ADHD with Ritalin, and it's not enough. Does anyone have good experiences with Zoloft in younger kids? Do temper tantrums get better too? I can't change my doctor cause he's literally the only doc covered under Healthy Families insurance. Can I demand new medication? I don't know.

Hi!

Not sure if this will help or not but...my 15 year old started with Zoloft about 4 months ago...what a huge difference! When you get down to it, it is all about Serotonin anyway...just not enough and thus anxiety. As an aside...she suffered from horrible eczema since the age of 9. Was diagnosed that the root cause was allergies...NOT!...it was anxiety the whole time. Guess what...her skin is clear and gorgeous and she doesn't take any antihistamine anymore.

Good luck!Kathy McClain

Hi,

My son too, started taking zoloft at age 10. He is now 13 and it helps a lot. We've had to increase the dose over the last three years though as he has grown. It was he who actually alerted me to his anxiety being the root cause of some of his issues. It was a commercial on the car radio that listed some of the symtoms of anxiety. The commerical then said if you had these symptoms that you could be suffering from anxiety and told the listener where to go for help. All of a sudden my son blurted out "that's how I feel, I probably have anxiety....Mom, what is anxiety?"

Up to that point he rarely would tell us if he was hurting or anything unless it was really bad. He always had a high tolerance for pain and didn't know how to express himself in how he was feeling emotionally or physically. So when he said that I was amazed and right away talked to his dr about it who put him on zoloft. Since then he stopped having the vomiting episodes and diahrea, and his meltdowns significantly decreased. Not saying this is the cure all, but it sure has made a difference.

Hi,

My son started on Zoloft when he was 11, due to anxiety. He has Asperger's and lots of attention issues as well as sensory issues, as well as anxiety that started a few years ago, gradually worsening. He is on stimulant meds for attention which have helped a lot. I had asked for the stimulant medication to be increased, but his doc wanted to first address some of the anxiety, because anxiety can also interfere with attention. Zoloft has helped his anxiety and attention both very much, and he has really no obvious side effects from his meds.

For our 7 yr old, we did try Abilify before considering Zoloft, the doc wanted to level out his mood swings with it. It only created temper tanrums we couldn't conrol. We got off it. Now we want to try Zoloft.

You might order the book "Clinical Treatment of Autism" by Dr. Hollander and ask the doctor to look at it.There is data on results of trials of kids on the autismspectrum as young as 2.Dr. Hollander favors SSRI's for kids with autism to reducemany symptoms of irritablity, perservating, compulsions etc.I too ask my therapist, won't the psychiatrist be offendedif I bring a book in? She said parents have to be the experts.Dr. Hollander is a professor at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYCand is well respected. My son's dr also added ambilify to his zoloft last summer and it worked much better than the resperidon. He was much calmer and less iirritable. But he started gaining way too much weight from it so I had him switched back. I sure wish I could have kept him on it. ne

You are absolutely right Kathy, they are very special. Many times I find my son's personality refreshing because you know that "you get what you get". There is no "implied" meanings to what he says. If you ask him, do you like my new hair style and he doesn't, he will say "no, I think its ugly". You at least know just how he feels. ne

Yes, we used zoloft with my ds who was severely impaired by anxiety as a child. It was about 10 days before it kicked in and made a huge difference in his anxiety level. I think he started at about age 6 or so.
