Guest guest
Hi, just wondering if anyone has had success with Abilify. I have a 6 year old DS with AS. He is on Tegretol for seizures and 2 mg Abilify. It seemed to be working great for a while, then the psych upped him to 4 mg. That made things worse so we went back down to 2. Things were better. But all of a sudden last week, he took a turn for the worse. . . not sure whether it has been the transition back to school, or if it has to do with the meds, but he has become very aggressive, confrontational and just plain mean and he is withdrawing socially. It's like he's back to where he was before he started the meds. Not sure what to do but yesterday he hit his friend in the eye with the remote control for his spy car and I worry so much about this kind of aggression. I have other children and I hate to admit that I am beginning to fear for their safety.
Guest guest
Abilify was a nightmare for us -- actually caused a couple of seizures. If you are seeing an increase in aggression, I would def talk to your dr. That being said, we have had a tough week with the transition back to school so maybe that's what it is. We had an increase of physical aggression this week plus several general meltdowns. HTH, E.V. Guest guest
Don't know if it is coincidental or not, but that also happened with my daughter and abilify. great for almost 10 months and then increased aggression, seizures, confrontational and withdrawn. At that time she was 13-14. She also gained 40 lbs. But the first 10 months she was the ideal child behaviorally. Guest guest
Hi, My psych. put my ds on Abilify 2mg to stabilize his mood swings. At first it was ok (like you say) buy quickly Dylan changed-more temper tantrums and worse ones, way more OCD and anxiety. Fighting with family seemed like all day. It was so obviously the wwrong med for him that we stopped it. Nothing has replaced it yet, but he's back at his baseline, no better, no worse. Guest guest
Abilify also has some severe withdrawal effects when the dose is lowered or stopped. They can go on for weeks (we saw our son's withdrawal symptoms as defiance). Leah
Guest guest
I am so sorry to hear this struggle. This is a short summary paper on medication and autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Hollander has a more in depth book on " Clinical Treatment of Autism " . There is all the results of clinical trials of the major classes of medications for ASD kids and the side effects of each. Dr. Hollander prescribes the anti-convulstant class of meds for ASD kids as a mood stabilzer and autism but does not seem to be a big fan of the antipyschotic drugs. He writes that there is not enough evidence yet in reducing autism symptoms with this class of medications and there need to be more trials in both areas.
