Guest guest
A speech therapist is hopefully very knowledgeable about pragmatic language problems. So just ask if they have experience working with it these kinds of issues. You can ask if they also have social skill groups as well which may help as he improves or gets older. If you don't mind, share with us what kinds of things your ds is doing in feeding therapy? I would love to hear about it. I wish we had done more when my ds was younger in this area. He is already in Occupational therapy for Sensory Processing Disorder and has feeding therapy with a Speech Pathologist for problems eating food with textures. The developemental Ped. said that he needs additional therapy for pragmatic language with a speech pathologist as well as play skills therapy and social skills therapy. Does anyone know what I should ask a speech pathologist to find out if they are trained in helping with pragmatic speech? My little boy is very advanced cognitively, but is rigid and repetitive in language and play.
Guest guest
Yes, I would like to hear more about the play therapy and social skills therapy at this young age. I would also like to hear more about how your son got diagnosed. A lot of us have older kids that we had trouble getting diagnosed, as we heard things like "He will grow out of it. Every 2 year old throws tantrums."SuzanneSent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Sender: Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2011 09:24:51 -0500 (EST)< >Reply Subject: Re: ( ) 2 year old just diagnosed with Aspergers A speech therapist is hopefully very knowledgeable about pragmatic language problems. Guest guest
Suzanne, I knew my DS was different from birth. He cried non-stop (well, except when sleeping in my arms) for the first six weeks. At 6 weeks, we found out he was allergic to milk and soy and had to start Neocate formula. He was not meeting early milestones such as smiling, cooing etc. My DS was not very good at latching on to a bottle. It was almost like he didn't know what to do with it. Sometimes he woulsd scream and scream when I would try to feed him. He just didn't know to close his lips around the nipple. At 3 months, he was diagnosed with Torticolis and started physical therapy. The therapist noticed weakness on the right side of his body (arm and leg), which may have been because of the torticolis. She worked with him on meeting milestones such as rolling over. He was late meeting all milestones. She said that he lacked internal motivation. My DS and I joined mommy and me classes and that is when it was clear that my DS was different from the other children. He was scared of so many things at Gymboree classes and during music classes he would freeze and star at the speakers. At 5 months of age, he gave up sucking and we had to feed him his formula by spoon. We thickened his formula with a stage two fruit and beech nut oatmeal. I took him for an evaluation with early intervention at 10 months of age. He was diagnosed with Sensory processing, motor planning challenges, and oral dsypraxia. My DS started occupational therapy and feeding therapy. He was unable to tolorate textured food because fo the sensory processing and motor challenge. He didn't know hoe to chew and would gag when food touched entered his mouth. It became even clearer that my DS was different when I continued mommy and baby classes and joined a mom's group. I met with the mom's group for weekly play dates. The children (mostly younger) were way ahead of my DS in play skills and the was they communicated with their moms. My DS is cognitively advanced. At 13 months he could identify every letter and say every letter sound. He can count on and on and wanted to learn how to count by tens to 100. He can spell " at " words and wants to know how many letters are in his name. He can also read some words. He just turned two in Nov. He loves to identify pictures in a book, but won't sit for a story. In the spring on 2010 around 15 months of age, I took my DS too a Neurologist and scheduled an appt. with a developmental ped. They have been following my son's since last spring and during our visit last week with the developmental ped., she said that he is a child with aspergers. He lacks conversational skills and does not do any pretend play. He is rigid and repetitive. This is how we were able to get a diagnosis at such a young age. From what I've discovered though is that social group therapy is not really available at such a young age. However we are going to see a speech pathologist for pragmatic therapy in the upcoming weeks. Guest guest
Roxanna, My DS has been in feeding therapy for almost a year and a half. It has been a very slow journey. HIs first feeding therapist believed in force feeding to desensitize. That did not work at all and we were with her for 10 long months. We swiched to a different facility and new therapist. She has been fantastic. We used a lof od facial massage, oral biting toys, nuk toothbrush and other things inside his mouth to help desensitize. Now my DS can eat anything I eat as long as we put it in the blender to puree it. Kim > > Yes, I would like to hear more about the play therapy and social skills therapy at this young age. Guest guest
Your story is very interesting Kim. You have been through a lot already with your son! I think most of us with older kids will recognize some of the things you have mentioned as symptoms we saw in our kids at that age. My son did reject baby food and cereal, but he drank a bottle, so he was OK nutrition-wise. I can only imagine how you felt and why you had to get him into therapy so young. I also remember Mommy and Me classes around 2 years old, and I spent most of the time in the hallway, since n kept running out. I can laugh about it now, but it was not funny then! I think it's great that they are diagnosing earlier, it can only help them address their issues in the right ways. I feel like we did a lot of things wrong when our son was younger, but we just didn't know the best way to help him. It sounds like you are definitely doing all the right things. I hope you see good results. Do you have any other children? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Suzanne suzmarkwood@... Guest guest
Thanks for sharing that. My ds is 14 yo and nobody took us that seriously at the age of 2. Keep working on it because it can become a big big problem down the road.
