My son brought this book home from his school library.

" There's a Frog in My Throat: 440 Animal Sayings a Little Bird Told Me "

It's about what some common sayings mean. I know our kids can struggle with this

as they are very literal.

It's got great goofy graphics and is fun to read. It also has an index so if you

need to look up something you heard you can find it.

It's still a little over his head at 5, but would be good for kids a little

older.

As we were going through the book, there were only 2 of the sayings he knew the

real meaning of. After he said them, he reached around and patted himself on the

back...apparently his teacher says 'give yourself a pat on the back' when the

kids do a good job :)

Another good series is Amelia Bedelia books for the younger ones. It helps with what is said and how something may be meant differently. It has led to discussions with my son and the books are really entertaining.

I concur. Amelia Bedeila herself takes everything very literally which always ends with her doing silly stuff. Its both funny because its obviously ridiculous and at the same time you can explain what she was supposed to do.

that is a great one - also loved this one below I copied the info for you - we found another one I can not remember the name of at one of those discount bargain book stores at a local outlet mall- I will have to find it at home ( we just moved and it is still in a box) and get the name for you- it was an awesome flipchart almost like an idiom a day or something but illustrated and brief so my 1st grader now second grader can flip through look at the pictures and then read why people say it and what they mean - that was my alltime favorite one

"Super Silly Sayings That Are over Your Head: A Children's Illustrated Book of Idioms"

Grade 1-4 - Especially designed for children with autism spectrum disorders, "foreign language backgrounds, or language-learning impairments that make it difficult for them to comprehend figurative language," this book presents idioms and their definitions. The sayings are broken down into sections by category or topic, such as food, clothing, and body parts. Three phrases on the left page face rectangles containing colorful illustrations that depict their literal and actual meanings. For example, "When someone says, 'It knocked my socks off,' she really means that something was amazing." The picture on the right shows a pair of feet with socks dangling below them alongside an image of a smiling girl looking at a rainbow. The final page has a section with tips for helping children understand and use idioms. A large foldout flap can be manipulated to cover the text pages and encourage youngsters to focus on the illustrations. An additional

purchase. - Bethany L. W. Hankinson, Elementary School, Newark, OH
