Guest guest
Hi! MY DS who is nine was just diagnosed this week. We currently live in PA. However, we are considering a move closer to family in Michigan to have more family support. We are wondering if there is anyone out there in this group who we could chat with about having an asperger;s child in MI. We are specifically curious about what kind of assistance and services that are available. Thanks!

Guest guest
We live in SE Michigan. My son is 11 (today) and he's in 5th grade. He was diagnosed in 3rd. The school has been accomodating and this year he is finally having a good year, thanks to having a good teacher who is familiar with AS. He participates in a social skills group thru school and checks in with the school social worker as needed. I requested that some of the kids from the social skills group be in his class this year and this has helped a lot as he actually has someone to talk to and eat lunch with. We are not in any outside support group, but we have a good therapist and psychiatrist that we work with and it wasn't hard to find them or get in for our initial evaluations.I hope this helps.Suzanne M Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: "Ann" <anne_logan@...>Sender: Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2011 20:44:37 -0000< >Reply Subject: ( ) Anyone with an asperger's child in Michigan? Guest guest
Hi Ann, We live in Michigan. So far, Autism doesn't have to be covered by insurance in Michigan, so a lot of people have trouble getting therapies covered. Many are working to change this, though. We live in the greater Detroit area. There is a place called the Judson Center, that has Autism Connections. They have quite a few low-cost services such as social skills group, behavior specialists, and parent support groups. They cover all ranges of the spectrum. In school, we've had a hard time getting services. Our next IEP meeting is on Monday. We are trying to get our 7 y.o. daughter certified under Autism Spectrum Disorder label. However, the language in the criteria seem to be more geared toward more low-functioning Autism. We hope to get her services one way or another, even if under another label. Is there anything more specific you'd like to know?
