Guest guest
Hi Debra, Isn't it amazing how one med can work wonders for one person and totally freak out another? I guess that's why there are so many different types out there so we can by trial and error figure which ones work. And if your anything like me you don't want to use your child as a guienna pig for meds. My son was on lithium for two years (started at age 11 when he became suicidal) and it was so scary for me. We've since then discovered that his symptoms stem more from his Aspergers and maybe not Bipolar but him being on meds really scared me. For sleep we use Melatonin. I've been using it since my son was about 5. I found chewable 1/2 mg. melatonin at our Trader Joes store which made it nice because he couldn't swallow pills. I know they also have melatonin in drops as I've seen it at Whole Foods store. For extreme anxious situations, like our trip to Disneyland my son has a " just in case " prescription of generic Atarax. It's actually an antihistimine, used for itching but it's also used for anxiety. I've been told it's what some hospitals give to patients before surgery or IV placement. In some cases meds like this can CAUSE anxiety in people too so there again, it's a trial and error. All it does for my son is take the edge off his anxieties. It's short acting (like benedryl) but it does the trick. I wish you the best of luck in your search. I know how hard it is to both live with anxiety and also have a child that suffers from it. Take care my friend, > > Hello everyone. I joined about a month ago and haven't posted since my intro but thank you, to all of you, for your posts. I have learned so much just from reading what you share. > > I do have a question. My youngest has AS and ADHD. Before he was finally given the AS diagnosis, we tried quite a few different ADHD meds for him and none of them helped. Some even made things worse and the rest only increased his appetite and he does NOT need that! LOL. The neuropsychologist who finally gave us the AS diagnosis in writing recommended Valerian and we tried that too. He had some really bad outbursts/meltdowns while on it and this was after making so much progress with needing just simple reminder cues to help him calm down. So my question is, have any of you also experienced these things with meds and have you found anything that can actually help anxiety issues in your child or help him sleep better at night? I've been thinking about discussing anti-depressants with his doctor but would like to hear from the real experts first...all of the parents who are living it! > > Thanks so much! > > Debra >
Guest guest
Hi there. DD9 has been on Prozac for 4 years now and the difference for her has been night and day. Her tendency to get “stuck” before was the cause of much anxiety and the psychiatrist that we found, whom we LOVE, is very conservative with meds but OK to use when indicated. So she takes Fluoxetine- which is the generic version of Prozac and has also used Risperdol for a while. That we have managed to wean to where she takes 0.2 mg once a day and after today’s appointment perhaps will wean to nothing…I wasn’t jumping up and down to take meds at first but the difference in DD’s ability to cope on the meds was SO dramatic, I am thankful we did. The psychiatrist explained that the meds will help her maintain a better baseline in order to have the successful experiences which will then in turn help her nervous system mature and hopefully learn to cope better once the meds are weaned. So to me- a foundation on which to build success. Hope that this is at least a bit helpful. I know that the opinions on medications are wide and varied. At the end of the day, it’s us parents who are doing what we can for our kids to grow up to be successful at doing life! Hope that the puzzle comes together for your family!Fondest regardsHeidie

Guest guest
My dd has both AS and ADHD, she takes Focalin which helps with her ADHD. She doesn't have an increase in her appetite, its just the opposite. Also you can give your child Melatonin to help him get to sleep.-From: Debra <evsmommy@...>Subject: ( ) Opposite effect from meds? Guest guest
The doctor did an iron check and a check of certain vitamins, d3 is the sunshine vitamins I'm told. I was told our society makes it difficult now for people to get enough of this vitamin. Many schools dont have adequate time outside also. My moms level was also low which made her alzhemiers worse for her. Many people get some D vitamins in milk, but he has asthma and refuses all milk. Now he takes 2 chewables from the healthfood store and I make sure he goes out each day getting sunshine. So now he takes d3, iron, intuiv, melatonin, DHA( omega-3) Daily and albuterol as needed. Guest guest
My son has tics, ADHD, Aspergers and OCD with anxiety and a mood disorder and he takes risperdal, for the anger and tantrums, intuniv for the tics and vyvanse for the attention and prozac for the anxiety and moods. He still has anxiety and moods though so I am never sure if the meds are causing more anger which I have read can be a side effect. His grades and focus really improved on the vyvanse but his tantrums returned. The prozac does help with the hyperfocus and anxiety. How does the anxiety effect your child during the day? We have tried so many meds that actually made him behave worse. I think it is trial and error and also finding a therapeutic dose. The psychiatrist explained sometimes meds are stopped before they get to the right does and are able to help. Good luck, for us it is an ongoing monthly med check with the Dr. and it has been very expensive and frustrating trying new meds that seem to help but stop working.... Trying to guess what is causing certain behaviors etc... > > > From: boogermeanie@... <boogermeanie@...> > Subject: Re: ( ) Opposite effect from meds? > > Date: Thursday, December 2, 2010, 1:14 PM > > > > > My son is 5 and has adhd and aspergers and sensory issues and a mood > disorder. we tried the ADHD meds they made it all worse, then now using INTUIV, > seems to calm him.
