Guest guest
Hi everyone, I am trying to navigate the journey of helping my daughter who I think may have Asperger's, she is almost 6 years old. A few questions: 1. Do I get her eval'd by a neuropsychologist, or a pediatric neurologist? 2. How do I get the school to give her services? 3. What books can guide me with the best interventions for her? 4. Can you recommend a good social stories book? Thanks!

Guest guest
1. She is young for a neuropschologist I think and many schools want a diagnosis from a MD. Many people see a developmental peditrician. At age 7 our neurologist said our daughter had anxiety. At age 9 I had the neuropschologist do a full evalaution and then we had the DX. I still had to go back to the nuerologist for the school to accept the DX. When I saw the neuropsch I brought audio tapes of peers interactions to be sure the neuropsch got the full picture. I taped meltdowns too. I documented all the stuff that had to be a certain way. 2. First you have to have a diagnosis. Then you ask for an IEP evaluation by the child study team. Ask for an evaluation of OT, PT, speech. My daughter still appeared somehat typical at 6 if she plays by herself at recess you want to ask for a behaviorist to observe her at recess and lunch this is called a functional behavior assessement FBA. 3. There are so many books. OASIS has a very complete book that is likely at your library. Tony Attwood is a known expert. There is alot on line by Yale Child Study Center. Look at this website. http://childstudycenter.yale.edu/autism/aspergers.html 4. Oh socializning where to start. I really had little luck with social stories my daughter rejects them. But if you have success with this look at the Gray Center. There is alot you can do, one parent training program is called Floortime by Dr. Stanley Greenspan. There are others that are more expensive (relationship development intervention RTI) but the main idea is to be a role model for an autistic child, to draw them out to start to shape non verbal communication and to help them enjoy socializing. http://www.thegraycenter.org/ http://stanleygreenspan.com/ Pam > > Hi everyone, > I am trying to navigate the journey of helping my daughter who I think may have Asperger's, she is almost 6 years old.
