Guest guest
People do say that if you wait long enough, they will eat what you give them eventually. But, it isn't true. I have one like this and believe me, we've tried everything. We don't buy him McD's each day but I bet if they stopped, they could substitute for another kind of food product similar. My ds will not eat what he should but eventually will substitute something similar if we wait it out. At any rate, it's not so simple as just don't get him what he wants. How long does he starve himself/have tantrums for if you refuse? Guest guest
My son was just like this too and even diagnosed as failure to thrive as a baby and toddler because he never hit the weight curve until age 4. We went to children's hospitals, nutritionists, did pediasure and all sorts of tricks to make him gain weight like adding nondairy creamer ( the high fat kind) to everything he ate. Nothing worked until we started to do biomedical interventions. He is still very picky but we found, as soon as we started biomedial, that he had a zinc definiciency which made food taste weird to him, he was gluten intolerant, so not gaining weight because he could not process the foods he was eating and addicted to and that, in combination with his sensory issues could not tolerate many textures. Now after sensory integration therapy and OT, GF/CF diet and supplements, he has gained about 1/2 and inch height wise and 1 pound or so at least every six months. He used to look anemic and pale and unhealthy witht he ribs sticking out and distended stomach like he was froma thrid world country, but now he is taller, still thin but not gaunt, and muscular. The first six months of the diet he gained nearly 10 pounds; now he is on abilify , which many report makes kids gain weight, so I watch him carefully, but he is slowly growing taller and filling out in a good proportion. The abilify did make him hungry all the time but he has such a speedy metabolism that we have not had the weight gain issues others have had - it would have been welcomed for a while but probably not long term. I have to say though, we did not start the abilify until fairly recently though and we saw all these improvements to my sons ability to grow long before he started taking any medications. He was addicted to chocolate and sweets and we found him sneaking candy and eating it behind rocking chairs and other furniture, then stuffing wrappers in crevises like he was never fed. He would be extrememly prone to temper tantrums if not given milk, or bread, or sugary foods. We found once we started some of the antiyeast treatments, that his obsession with these types of foods just went away. He still like candy and treats but he will ask now and take no for an answer. We don't find wrappers hiding everywhere and we can leave candy in plain site withut inducing a meltdown. this was all prior to biomedcial and now he is absolutely a changed kid in terms of food obsessions. Guest guest
Just wanted to say I too have an extremely picky eater. He is still living and breathing. So, we have to go out to the nearest mcds or call a express order for him. Then at night, another yogurt with another cookie.I can count with my fingers the food he likes. But he is a very healthy and happy child. I am just worried that this kind of food is no good for him in the long run.I "offer" him other kinds of foods together with what he normally eats, but he acts as if I served him a stone or a plastic apple. He does not seem to understand that that is food, even if we all seat with him to eat our own food. Guest guest
Very picky here too. I thought he broke his foot last night rough housing and the first thing that came to mind was his terribly limited diet. No break, and he's doing ok so far.
