Guest guest
Wow..... I'm not the only one living with this? Ours is electronic parts, pieces of plastic, "experiments" in various stages. There was a period of time that only pins and needles could be used for the electronic experiments, since they made the best connectors and they were accidentally getting left on the carpet all over the living room. THAT was one of the worst.... ( ) She's tearing my house apart! My daughter is 12 years old and has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome with ADHD and depression and anxiety. She is driving us nuts with her continued destruction of our house and belongings. She has peeled the veneer strips of all of our bookcases, her bed and her brother's bed. She currently is stripping the bathroom door. She breaks most of them into pieces about 3 inches long and collects them. She carves wood banisters with a knife(I hid all knives). She breaks and chews pencils into pieces and collects the leads. We are all tired of all the slivers of wood in our carpets/furniture/laundry! These are things that have begun and increased with frequency over the past year. She began Middle school a year ago. She is more destructive than ever! Has your child done this? What can I try to get this behavior to stop? Is it sensory? impulsive? compulsive? what???? Can anyone help?
Guest guest
I have been going threw this since my almost 14 yr old began pulling up! we have replaced doors, windows, furniture, heavy appliances, electronics (the latest being our new flat screen hd t.v) so many times that the only thing we will replace anymore is doors going in and out of our home! I have also had and still do have the shavings and pieces of wood to deal with.He is constantly cutting and breaking wood insude or outside. He just tore our front porch and steps down off the front of the house and it went all the way across! Oh,almost forgot,he also has completely destroyed the guest bathroom, broken the commode and sink. And we have more holes than walls in our house. We have NO doors inside, closet doors, bedroom doors, none. I have no idea what is causing it! best of luck, Tricia > > My daughter is 12 years old and has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome with ADHD and depression and anxiety. We don't have this problem, but it sounds compulsive and maybe obsessive to me. My Asperger son is not ADHD, so maybe that is a clue. My NT son is like this to a point, just not so extreme. And he has problems with attention, just not to the clinical level. My guess would be it has something to do with the ADHD, which makes me wonder if it would respond to medication. Have to talked to your meds doc about this? Ruth
Guest guest
Try googling " xylophagy " and also " pica wood " as this deals with possible mineral deficiencies that lead to a need to imbibe wood amongst other non-food items. http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Nutrition/Are-weird-cravings-sign-of-possible-miner\ al-deficiency/show/2279 is a link to a forum discussion on various non-food items people crave and might provide a little info. Hope something in the above helps… a > > My daughter is 12 years old and has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome with ADHD and depression and anxiety. Guest guest
Ask your doctor if a medicine would help with her problem. pjFrom: gal220gal <gal220girl@...>Subject: ( ) She's tearing my house apart! Guest guest
Meds might help but my 10 yr old aspie breaks things too. He has broken many of his toys and collects the pieces. Last week he broke the shower head out of the wall and we had to repair the sheetrock. He has tore a hole in our the back of our couch. The window on his side of my durango does not roll down because he stuck gum under the button and pressed down until the motor burnt up. Every drawer in his bedroom furniture is broken-the list goes on and on. You are not alone. I have no good advice but we rarely leave him out of our site. It is absolutely exhausting. I know this is not the best thing I could be doing but when I need to get something done or just need a break, I turn the tv on and he will sit (bounce) and watch it.
