My son is 14 and was bullied most of his life now he has become popular and a regular teen with raging hormones and explosive emotions. He is on abilify and prozac. Does prozac effect irrritability because he just got put on this med? He stormed off from the principle and demanded to go home today because he was angry. Yesterday he punched a door because he was angry. Doeas anyone have any suggestions?

Prozac is suppose to reduce compulsive behaviors in

autism spectrum kids. It alone can decrease or increase aggressiveness

depending on how the child responds. But if he has been

on it a long time it is unlikely the source of the outbursts.

Prozac at 20mg is a standard dose for a kid your son's age.

What is he on, how much? Some kids do well on less 8mg. Some

do well on more 40mg.

The Abilify is suppose to reduce irritable and aggressive behaviors. It improves

serotonin levels as does Prozac and acts to also balance

dopamine levels.

If prozac is too activating, zoloft may not be.

But for aggressiveness and anger in ASD kids they usually

look to the anti-psychotic drugs such as Abilfy. Rispedal

is used with young kids but often puts on weight.

If these drugs are not working the psychiatrist may start

looking at mood stabizers in the anti-convulsant drug

class. They often are helpful too and affect other

neurtransmitters in the brain than the anti-psychotic

drugs.

I hope your son's psychistrist can help figure this out.

How long has he been stable on prozac and Abilify?

Sometimes kids with ASD are so sensitive that medications

can't be increased too far, so another drug is added

in instead.

Best of luck trying to figure this out.

You can read about all this in " Clinical Treatment of Autism "

by Hollander at Mount Sinai Autism Center in NYC.

I ordered the book off Amazon.com it is very helpful I

think to understanding medication and how to trial them.

Recently the doctor put our ds 10 on prozac. It made him very irritable. Our

normally happy son was angry and irritable most of the time. He also had more

" blow ups " . We finally took him off and after the meds wore off our happy

albeit anxious son was back. I know meds are different for everyone but I hope

this helps.

My son will be 14 in a few days and zoloft for anxiety and depression with

resperidom for aggression has worked best.

This is very interesting....my son 15 with raging hormones and explosive emotions (mainly at home) is on Prozac too! He has broken his computer because he got angry at a friend and then when suspended...he got angry and threw his phone. It all happens when he get upset ...angry with friends ...he lacks impulse control. His adderall was just increased ...but now I am wondering if the prozac is adding to his irritablity. I think I will email the doctor about this.

My son also takes Prozac and we have had to adjust the dosage on at least one occasion due to increased irritability. Oh and you may want to start at a very low dose of prozac 2.5mg

and increase after one week to 5mg and so on. This is often

recommended to use low doses with developmental disorders.

Our doctor titrates up too fast. I always start lower than

the doctor says ...I follow guidelines in Clinical Treatment

of Autism by Hollander rather than guidelines

for typical kids.
