Guest guest
Kids with AS go through so many ups and downs and it is very hard to figure out what is causing it and what is helping it. No medication will help if the environment is wrong. It would help to find out if there have been any changes at school that would upset him. Also concerta can make anxiety worse. When my son was 7 we started him on Lexapro. It is an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant medication. It has worked well. He started Tenex for attention last year and that has been great. We started the lexapro when was in a school where the staff were clueless! Cluelessness in any staff people can wreak havoc. If the principal and assistant principal do not get it they could be pressuring the teacher to do something different like treat your son as a behavior problem rather than a child with a disability. Does your son have an IEP? Sorry, I'm sure you've probably already covered a lot of this but I have a terrible memory for these things in this group. There are SO many people to keep track of. Miriam > > My son was diagnosed with AS about a year and a half ago and we tried to avoid the medication path, but we ended up having to put him on Conceta and Tenex about six months ago. He almost imediatly started to settle down at school and his attention span increased and his agessive behavior greatly improved; but, now he is acting out again and is becoming more violent and seems to be more moody and aguminitive, and almost never smiles anymore. I know that sometimes meds stop working and you have to try others until you find the right one; but, I want to know what we could try in the meantime, while he gose though the adjustment period; we can't keep him out of school, but if he gose he will just keep getting into trouble ( his teacher seems to understand, BUT the princapal and asst-principal don't). >
Guest guest
Hi! I don't know anything about Tenex, but my 11 year old AS/ADHD son is on Concerta, and has been for the past 2 years. We have had to consistently increase his dosage as it would start to not work after a while. We started on 18mg, and we are increasing to 54mg today. It is so scary to have him on these meds, as he also started on Zoloft recently for his anxiety and depression, but at this point he is actually begging for an increase in his Concerta because he hates to keep on getting into trouble in school for his inability to focus and his impulsiveness. I don't know how much more they can increase his dosage...we may have to try a different medication soon, but this is the one that has worked well for him. Good luck to you. > > My son was diagnosed with AS about a year and a half ago and we tried to avoid the medication path, but we ended up having to put him on Conceta and Tenex about six months ago. Guest guest
Hey my son took concerts and got all the way up to 54 mg and it didn't work. We were told that most stimulant meds don't work for Aspies so he's been on Stratera now for three years and it works. We have to keep the dose low because at 60 mg it made him too agitated. He takes 25 mg in the morning and it helps. Hope you can find something that works. Sent from my Verizon Wireless Phone <craftmasterk@...> wrote: >Hi! Guest guest
If he has an IEP you can ask for breaks in his day, to limit sustain attention to no more than 20 minutes and then a break. Stimulants can increase agitiation and aggression when the doses go up in kids with AS. It is hard to say if an increase is going to help. If not you can try an anti-depressant for the mood/irritability issues. In the antidepressant class prozac has been the most studied in kids with AS and has been shown to reduce irritability, outburts, compulsiveness ....more doctors seem to like to prescribe newer SSRIs like zoloft, celexa, lexapro ... there is not the quantity of clinical trial data but they work too. Guest guest
Like. Pam said, stimulant meds don't often do well with AS kids. At least that's what our son's doctor has told us. He is almost 80 and has been treating AS kids for over thirty years. In our case he was definitely right. Since kindergarten our son went from ritalin to several doses of concerta and adderall. We recently even tried vyvance and it mad him act just like you described your son. Ask your Dr about stratera, added with zoloft and resperidon has worked the best. Hope this helps, just my thoughts. ~ne Sent from my Verizon Wireless Phone Pamela <susanonderko@...> wrote: >If he has an IEP you can ask for breaks in his day, to limit >sustain attention to no more than 20 minutes and then a break. > >Stimulants can increase agitiation and aggression when the >doses go up in kids with AS. Guest guest
Does your son have any depression with the Stratera? We were told it could increase our son's depression so they are avoiding that one. I am not sure which one they will try next...I guess they can all have their side effects. Thanks! > >> > >> My son was diagnosed with AS about a year and a half ago and we tried to avoid the medication path, but we ended up having to put him on Conceta and Tenex about six months ago. Guest guest
No not from the Stratera directly. He had an issue for a while with depression but it was mostly due to school issues. We had to move him to a differenct school and have finally somewhat ironed out a lot of issues. But he also takes Zoloft which we had to increase anyway for anxiety so I'm sure it also counter acts the depression. It is a constant trial and error situation with medications and dosages. But of all the things we have tried this in the only one that we've seen improvements with. ne From: <craftmasterk@...>Subject: ( ) Re: My 7 year old aspieis having a new round of acting out.
