I just want to say that I was on Seroquel for over a year and it

took me about as long to wean off that nasty drug. Horrible! Be sure

to do a careful wean to reduce suffering! Wish I could help with the

tardive dyskinesia. Just get him off of that drug...

Hi, has anyone's child been in this situation? My 12

year old son has been taking 300mg Seroquel

for 6 months. He has had intermittent motor tics since

pre-K, with a surge in the frequency of them for 2

different periods of time. Well, there was a sudden

increase in the motor tics a few weeks ago. I let the

dr. know, but then upon reading some things, I just

asked her what the difference was between tics and

tardive dyskinesia. She said it can be hard to tell;

the plan has been to slowly decrease the dosage, so

she wants to continue that.

However, I have done some research, and they are

going to look similar! But, if it is tardive

dyskinesia, they can be permanent, so I need to figure

this out.

I have e-mailed the doctor and asked to have him

seen, she said I can bring him in sometime tomorrow.

Has anyone else been in this position? I am really

stressed.

Thanks,

Liz T.

been there, done that. 9 year old son on Risperdal. Developed tardive dyskinesia on it. Tried to taper it and he was NUTS. TD went away off Risperdal but we couldn't live without the meds. We started Abilify and pushed the dose up high and we are able to manage. Added back in 1 mg of Risperdal with 27 mg Abilify and he can safely live at home this way. We have tried numerous times to slowly lower the antipsychotics, but it is scary and awful and we can't stop them. No TD now.

When I got tardive dyskinsia like uncontrolable movements from medicine before, propranolol (which lowers blood pressure) worked for me and once off the meds that caused the twitches,  the td like movements/twitches went away.

This was explained by my son's nero doc as something that does not go away. He

did say that they could if caught early enough, but it still makes me nervous.

My son was seeing the nero for tics that started 2 years ago while on Concerta

(although they say the Concerta had nothing to do with it....I don't believe

that for one minute). I was also told that the tics can move around and change

in severity. I know we have thought a few times the tics were gone, only to

have them come back worse! They started out with an eye thing, then a

nose/mouth thing, and now it is more a neck/mouth tic. They were so bad this

summer that my son would complain about his neck hurting :( The neuro also

explained that these could be considered " childhood tics " and that most kids

outgrow them by the age of 12....which serves as a little comfort, although my

son is only 8!

We have tried Clonidine and Intuniv....both blood pressure meds...but neither

helped the tics and both made him very sleepy. The neuro also tried Strattera

as I guess that sometimes can stop them (did not work either). We just switched

from Abilify to Risperdal a few weeks ago as I felt the tics were worse on the

Abilify (although it could just be a normal cycle of them being worse). It

seems like they slightly improve when we start each med, but soon return. I

have noticed a slight eye tic the last week or 2 along with his neck/mouth tic,

so I'm not sure the Risperdal is going to work for him either. I want to find

something to help him function better (he has been a much happier child since

Abilify/Risperdal), but worry so much about the tics becoming something more.

If anyone has suggestions on a med...I am all ears. It seems to me we are about

out of options :(

So, you are not alone. I know just how scary these tics are!!!!
