Guest guest
Well If you want to get him a taste of camp there is one that a lot of misfits— some with Asperger’s--- end up going to. It’s Circle Pines Center and it’s www.circlepinescenter.org. You can do work exchange where he goes to camp for two weeks (it’s an overnight camp) for free and you work in the kitchen or help run activities or something. I worked there for a couple years and the staff is amazing. They are all concerned about social justice and are aware of disabilities and such. Guest guest
I JUST signed my son up for a Summer Camp, yikes big bucks! 5 days 9=-3 600. I have NO idea how im gonna pay for this. I thought I would solicite family. Im finding out about grant money that will pay for therapy ( since this is a therapy camp ) Its through a program called MRDD (here in OHIO) I found out about grants and all the little hidden treasures that are out there by going to Autism Society meetings. As for school paying, welll call you states board of education and ask to talk to ther person incharge of grant money for a disabled child. Our summer camp isnt till August, I plan to have some fundraisers > > ok- just gonna through this out there... > > My son is 6.5 yrs in K all day and he needs camp this summer. Guest guest
In NYC some of the special needs schools run 12 month programs... It's noted on the IEP. If your program is not 12 months - I think you need to prove regression without services in order to qualify - and even then, I think it's individual services - not a full day camp. Another alternative is with Respite care - if you qualify. > > ok- just gonna through this out there... > > My son is 6.5 yrs in K all day and he needs camp this summer. Guest guest
If he has an IEP than you can ask for extended school year so that he doesn't regress in social skills and school attendance. But then the school usually has this program at the school he attends. If you find a school for AS and it teaches social skills and he doesn't receive it at school or else you want him to take it you can request to the Child Study Team and to the Director of Special Services that he needs more social skills than he is getting. I am sure that there is some way to advocate for a year round program, it may mean that he attends a special needs school for the summer. It may mean though that you need to advocate for a change in school placement, since he needs a year round program. best of luck, Pam > > ok- just gonna through this out there... > > My son is 6.5 yrs in K all day and he needs camp this summer. Guest guest
I don't know if this is a possibility,,,, But, in WI, there is the Easter Seals Camps. There is an actual Aspergers camp 3 times a year. My son is actually going to the 5 day one in July. He's gone to the 2 day one, before. Anywho - this isn't a school-sponsored camp, obviously, but there are ways that the program says to try to pay. They suggest Social Services, the Elks Club, and a few other organizations that have been willing to pay in the past. This may be an option for you, too. I believe Easter Seals is everywhere.Good luck. Guest guest
camp question: as Pam mentioned you could try using ESY (extended school year) services here's a link to information about it on the wrightslaw website. http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/esy.index.htm Tami > > > > ok- just gonna through this out there... > > > > My son is 6.5 yrs in K all day and he needs camp this summer. Guest guest
I'm not laughing at all. This services is called, "ESY" or "extended school year" service. It really should be discussed with the IEP team on a regular basis - every year. Go to http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/esy.index.htm to read about ESY, what the law states, etc. Then once you are prepared, call and ask for an IEP meeting from whoever is in charge of arranging those at your school. Let them know you want to discuss ESY. Guest guest
You can definitely get the school to pay for camps or anything else that would be determined to meet the needs of the child requiring services. It should be individualized - so one child may need a camp, or a group or individual therapy or all three. There is no set limit on what is available except what is available in your area, of course!
