Guest guest
Hi Shell, We use an Omega 3/6 combo with our 8yr old and she is not worth being around if she forgets to take it - we use 3 capsules which is a little above the recommended dose. On it she hardly ever has meltdowns and is emotionally less fragile with hardly any endless crying and easily hurt feelings and mood swings between happy and sad. She herself says she knows if she hasn't taken it as without it she feels "tired, ratty and stroppy" (her words). It took a few days for the improvements to become apparent. I know from your other post that you are dealing with a much older child (adult) but if he is prepared to take the Omega 3 it might be worth trying a slightly higher dose if he'll comply. It is also apparently important that Omega 6 is taken in the same balance as 3 but I also know that many people's diets are naturally higher in Omega 6 anyway. We do not use any other medication but I have also found that reducing the wheat/gluten content in our diet has helped with dd's ability to emotionally empathise with others and relate somewhat to the feelings of others, her eye contact is also a little improved. Elimination of wheat/gluten has not brought enough improvements for us to justify the massive effort that involves but reducing it through bread and bread products has helped. I know that many find these suggestions "emotive" and that this forum is not about diet changes etc - I am just saying what we have found helps, but these are not a magic cure by a long shot, at least for us, but any improvement is helpful. I cannot imagine what you must be going through at the moment, but I sincerely hope the situation improves quickly for you. a From: intublu Sent: Monday, December 21, 2009 10:40 PM Subject: ( ) Omega-3 Anyone use this for AS? Guest guest
Can you let me know the specific brand and dose you use? Does your child take them in the capsule? We haven't checked to see if my son could swallow pills or capsules but I'm sure it would be a lot easier to get him to take anything if he could. Thanks,From: a <paulahenderson@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Omega-3 Anyone use this for AS? Guest guest
Thanks for the info a, Life is one long dark ride and it has been for the past.....20 years. On top of everything else I have MS but have only had two major exacerbations in the last 21 years thus I feel very fortunate considering the enormous amount of stress which we all endure as parents with disabled or rather " discovered' (Tony Atwood) children. I just cannot believe what is happening, it's so unreal, so frustrating and just so ..... beyond words. But, thank you for sharing and I pray the Omega kicks in for my first son, a boy who use to be so gentle and soft spoken and is now the complete opposite. If you see anything glittering on the ground, it's not tinsel, glass, or glitter just what is left of my shattered heart. Ahhh, I'm sorry I sound so pathetic. Anyway, thanks again. Guest guest
Hi ,There are pills and some are rather large and he would have to swallow quiet of few depending upon the EPA and DHA (Google Dr. Stoll, Harvard Study on Omega- 3 for Bipolar Disorder) and you will find the study and amounts. It also comes in a flavored powder form in various flavors which would require drinking the flavor and she might fuss if it is not to her liking. Guest guest
Hi and Shell, We are in the UK and use a product called Efalex. I have googled around and found a link in the States to the same product https://www.emersonecologics.com/Products/EmersonMain/PID-EFALE.aspx We started in liquid form with a dessert spoon each day and then Beth realised that she doesn’t get the flavour with the capsules and she now takes those. The liquid has a natural lemon/lime flavour which is not unpleasant. We showed Beth how if she softens the capsule in her mouth (without puncturing it!) it is easier to then swallow and that is how she does it. She takes three each morning. From memory they started to work within a few days – maybe up to a week. I know three weeks later when I was wondering if they were helping, she went for 2 days without taking them and had a massive meltdown where she lost the ability to be reasoned with or understand straightforward logic, she was shouting, no eye contact at all and extremely tearful – she basically completely shut down for about an hour. From that point we have all ensured she takes them and we have not had another such dramatic incident – she was very prone to them before we started on the Efalex. To help her with the initial idea, we explained that fish oil is great for helping intelligence and “being clever” – ie appealing to the brainbox part of Aspergers, which you can back up with studies if necessary, and this got us past the first taste hurdles. We also all took it for a little while to help encourage her too – that is one advantage over meds where only the patient can take it. Despite having said all the above, there is no way at all I am saying this is a cure, we still have massive nightmares with major communication issues, empathy, eye contact, co-ordination etc etc etc the Efalex just seems to have “helped” a bit overall. Hope this helps. a -----Original Message----- From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sent: 22 December 2009 13:11 To: Subject: Re: ( ) Omega-3 Anyone use this for AS? Guest guest
My 4yo son's developmental pediatrician recommended that we add more Omega-3 to his diet. I know that he can't swallow capsules. Are there any other ways of getting it? Thanks,
Guest guest
Oh! I know the answer to this one because I just asked the opposite question. Our psychiatrist recommended Cor-Omega which comes as a powder form to be put in drinks. (My daughter would drink it, but she would take pills.)
