Sorry for the x post but trying to reach anyone who may have tried it.

Thanks so much for all the help on the straterra. It was especially

helpful to read that our doc is not the only 1 with a controversial

opinion that you can just cold turkey it. Also very helpful to hear

that others did have issues coming off and it only lasted about a week

as tomorrow will be our week and finally yesterday was a tolerable day

so, despite a starting bad but ending ok morning I am hoping today and

tomorrow will be even better.

However now I need more info on intuniv. Specifically anyone at all

who had a bad reaction??? I have googled and archive searched and the

worst I found was it not working, but most results were good to great.

However that is encouraging to hear but doesn't prepare me for the

what ifs. I want to know experiences, including good but especially

bad on intuniv.

Our emergency appt yesterday the psych decided that she can no longer

take straterra since it is overstimulating her. So he didn't want to

put her back on with even a dose change. But he also believed that

her behavior was mostly NOT withdrawal as he doesn't agree that there

is withdrawal that much. However I don't agree. He thinks a lot of

this is just her pre straterra behavior. And I am not deluded enough

to think some of that isn't that but this is much worse too so I'd

like to believe some is withdrawal. I mean she is also on mood

stabilizer so if this was just " her " I would think that would help

some.

Anyway, b/c of this he doesn't want her on nothing and wants to start

intuniv. The fine print isn't scary like it is on the straterra but

its also newer, even if it is based in tenex which is an older drug

(maybe I should also ask about bad reactions to tenex??) So maybe it

will change as it is used more.

It is supposed to be like straterra in that it will be a week before

it starts working so dh wanted to go ahead and start her today,

assuming bad reactions wouldn't be for a week+ out.

However, as I have said before, my grandma is in the hospital so we

(meaning me and the kids, dh isn't going but my mom is) are leaving in

the am for the 13+ hour drive in a minivan with her and 4 other kids,

3 of which are younger and half her size (and her rages scare to

death). So I NEED to be prepared in, if the intuniv can cause

behavior problems before the week mark or just in general. I know I'm

crazy and I will cancel if she has any major rages today but yesterday

we saw some improvement in she got upset at school but settled down so

she was able to get on the bus and she was only irritable in the

afternoon so not a single rage yesterday so my hope is, it may be hard

but it will be a survivable trip.

If it makes a difference, when she started straterra she didn't have a

" wait " period b/c it caused her such extreme drowsiness the first week

that she was too tired to rage or cause problems. By the time that

even started to wear off (day 3-4) I am not sure if it still effected

her in she was too tired to rage or if it had already started to help

since she was still really tired she just wasn't sleeping from the

moment she got off the school bus until the next morning. I am sure

though that it had kicked in, even at the starter dose by the time the

sleepiness completely wore off (the week mark). She actually was even

ok on the starter dose for a month before we moved it up.

My son has been trying intuniv for about a month now. We will not be continuing

for 2 reasons - 1. even with insurance it will be about $400 a month! 2. he has

gained weight

There aren't enough benefits. Plus, I don't like that this is so new and was

only tested to be used for 9-12 weeks at a time.

Tenex works great for my sons tics and has the added benefit of helping him fall

asleep at night. The intuniv keeps him awake if he takes it at night, even when

paired with meletonin!

Tenex has been on the market for 45 years - I'd rather give him that, it bothers

me to put something so new into a growing body - if he were an adult I might not

be so apprehensive.(but that's TOTALLY just me! Can't say how I'd feel if he

were raging or hurting himself)

But bottom line is, we haven't seen any bad effects other than not being able to

sleep (we moved it to a morning dose), it's way too expensive, there was a 6 lb.

gain in less than a month, and I have not seen any benefit to him worth it.

Hope this is of some help to you. Feel free to ask any questions.

Have a great day, B.

My son takes in intuniv and we haven't had any side effects...

The only think I could find was the possibility of low blood pressure and

tiredness -- so some people play with the time of day their child takes it ...

We haven't seen this issue so he takes 2mg in the morning.

Good luck,
