Guest guest
The message is thoughtful. I wonder what age your targeting? Also, when you are a new, unpublished storybook writer, publishers like to partner you with a known, well recognized artist, to ensure greater success of book sales. I suggest you start by approaching the publishers first. Send in a synopsis of your storyline, the catalyst for it, and some sample pages. You may have to send to several publishers and get many rejections before you get a "hit", so try not to get discouraged by a pile of rejections. Good Luck! Guest guest
It's so hard for these kids to understand why they don't have friends. My son is 6 and an only child and when he sees another child anywhere we are, he runs up to them to make friends. Because of his behavior in school, no one wants to be his friend. He was just dx this month so before then, I didn't even know what aspergers was.I recently joined a local AS support group here in the Phila, PA area called ASCEND at http://www.ascendgroup.org/ which is a meetup group and every parent on the site is longing for friends for their kids and teens. They schedule outings at bowling alleys, tours at local businesses, e.g. at a candy factory, and provide info on AS and info on a Summer Camp Expo for special needs kids which is held tomorrow. If anyone local wants info on this expo, go to www.vfes.net I hope to find friends for my son through this group..One mom said her son met all his current friends through the meetup group and they have been his friends for years. So on the positive side, I think they accept each other easier than other kids accept them. Maybe you can use this as a happy ending example.I have read a book called "Do Unto Otters" to my son many times. It's about a rabbit who has otters moving in next to him and he is nervous how to treat them. The moral is to treat them as you would like otters to treat you. I think it's a good book for AS kids. My son loves it. I also rented "Ant Bully" from the library which is also a good movie for him. Maybe we all can give each other ideas for books and movies for our kids and books for the parents to read. Maybe we can also refer some nice, non violent web sites or computer games for AS kids. I'm new to this so would appreciate any info anyone has. Thanks,Gen in Phila, PA areaFrom: Dawn Falbe <dawn@...>Subject: RE: ( ) Ideas for a childrens book Date: Thursday, January 28, 2010, 10:25 PM Love this idea… Go for it Namaste Dawn in Tucson From: [mailto:AspergersSu pport@group s.com] On Behalf Of Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 7:16 PM Subject: ( ) Ideas for a childrens book I have been speaking to someone that is affiliated to a publisher. i had mentioned i would love to write a childrens book about children with aspergers or higher funtioning autism. i would like to call the book "i like freinds too" i would like to write it on the perspective (or at close as i can come) of a child with asperger that doesnt have many freinds because other children think he is different and dont want to be freinds. i wanted to make the point that, just because they look like other children doesnt mean they can act like other children. but the moral is, they still have feelings, and need good freinds that can understand. i feel if there were books out there like that, then maybe teachers could read them to younger classes to start them on the understanding that not everyone has to be the same to be freinds. i would like feedback on this idea. my brother is a fantastic artist and especially cartoonist, and would consider doing all of the illustrations. but i was actually toying with the idea of having other aspie children draw all of the pictures of them participating in the book , even including how it makes them sad if someone is unkind to them. does anyone have any comments ? Guest guest
Hi, I'm haven't read all the replies on this thread, are you writing a book for NT children to help them understand Aspie kids or writing a book for Aspie kids to help them understand NT kids? I watch my son try to make friends and just not click, but it can be really difficult to put into words exactly what goes wrong, it can be a mix of being inflexible,or too flexible, being too polite, being over supportive, whatever he seems to try it is just not right for the situation that he is in, older/dominant kids can spot that he is different from a mile and just make him the target. So I guess what I'm saying is it is a very complex issue that as a parent I can't always make sense of, and don't know the best approach, if you can put this into a book that children can understand good luck to you. Guest guest
If you are thinking about a children’s book, you might be interested in joining CBPublishing . It is full of great and experienced publishers many of whom are very new at this, as well as writer, illustrators and authors. They can answer a lot of questions about publishing…I think all in the group have done children’s books, some self-published, others by publishing company. In 2004, we did a coffee table book about & and sure wish I had known about some of the publishing groups, would not have made so many mistakes. Good luck, Sue in Tennessee www.chasinglewisandclark.com
Guest guest
My age range to target with this book would be possibly grade school (nursery through 3rd or 4th grade). after that. the kids minds are made up already on how they will treat others. > > > From: Dawn Falbe <dawn@...> > Subject: RE: ( ) Ideas for a childrens book > > Date: Thursday, January 28, 2010, 9:25 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Love this idea… Go for it >  > Namaste >  > Dawn in Tucson >  >  >  > > > From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of > Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 7:16 PM > > Subject: ( ) Ideas for a childrens book >  >  > > > > I have been speaking to someone that is affiliated to a publisher. > i had mentioned i would love to write a childrens book about children with aspergers or higher funtioning autism. > > i would like to call the book " i like freinds too " > > i would like to write it on the perspective (or at close as i can come) of a child with asperger that doesnt have many freinds because other children think he is differentand dont want to be freinds. > i wanted to make the point that, just because they look like other children doesnt mean they can act like other children. but the moral is, they still have feelings, and need good freinds that can understand. > > i feel if there were books out there like that, then maybe teachers could read them to younger classes to start them on the understanding that not everyone has to be the same to be freinds. > > i would like feedback on this idea. > my brother is a fantastic artist and especially cartoonist, and would consider doing all of the illustrations. > but i was actually toying with the idea of having other aspie children draw all of the pictures of them participating in the book , even including how it makes them sad if someone is unkind to them. > > does anyone have any comments ? >
Guest guest
thanks for the info Sue. i will deffinitely look into this. my thought are to target children that dont have asperger, or are a-typical " . maybe if we can teach them early enough that these children cnt help the way they arre and welcome the help of others, there might start to be a type of " tollerance " toward these children that (for lack of a better term) need and want freinds. i had just watched the movie about asperger adults recently called " mozart and the whale " . i have to tell you, it was hard fighting back the welling of tears when what i thought was the most powerfull line in the movie. the main woman character yells " whats the sense of being in this group? " . and before she walks away, the main male character states back " to not be alone ! " . if i can be a part of them not being alone at an earlier age, then i can die happy. > > If you are thinking about a children's book, you might be interested in > joining CBPublishing It is full of great and experienced > publishers many of whom are very new at this, as well as writer, > illustrators and authors. > > > > They can answer a lot of questions about publishing.I think all in the group > have done children's books, some self-published, others by publishing > company.
