Guest guest
Does anyone here have any experience with Risperidone? And if so, can you share? I met with ’s Child Development Pediatrician today, to discuss my displeasure with Concerta… which has ramped up his anxiety SO high, and has actually made him MORE socially withdrawn (something she tells me can be quite common in children with Aspergers). SO we talked about the fact that, obviously, there are NO medications, persay, for Autism or Aspergers. BUT we can focus on the specific subset of “symptoms”. IF the primary concern is inattention, distractibility and hyperactivity, then an ADHD med, either stimulant or non-stimulant, may prove to be helpful. IF the primary concern is anxiety, then an SSRI (Lexapro, Celexa, etc) can be effective. IF the primary concern is irritability, rages, violent meltdowns, aggression (including the kind that doesn’t seem to have much of a reason to it) or, as she put it “0-60” type anger… then an atypical anti-psychotic can help. APPARENTLY, from what I’m told, Risperidone is the only drug approved by the FDA for assisting children with Autism (when it comes to irritability, etc). SO she recommended we keep up the Concerta for now, and slowly wean it over the next while… and we’ll start in on the Risperidone. She told me this should “take off the edge”… which would be really lovely with – who’s VERY rigid, and prone to verbal or physical aggression when things aren’t going his way. SIGH! If anyone has experience with Risperidone, good OR bad, please share Thanks all !!! =)

Guest guest
Was just typing and had an earthquake here in California as I was trying to respond to you! Risperidal is great, but has potential risks. It is FDA approved for autism. Abilify was just approved by the FDA for autism as well. I like it better than Risperidal because it theoretically has less risk of tardive dyskinesia. They say this is because of how it works chemically. There is much less weight gain with Abilify as well. My son has been on both alone and at one point a combo of both. Without them, he wouldn't be able to be in the home. ( ) Meds revisited... Guest guest
Thank you SO much. is currently taking Concerta, and I’m nervous about what will happen in a month when we pull him off the Concerta all together… but I’m REALLY hoping this Risperidone comes through for us. I like seeing these types of posts, so thank you for sharing your experience =) From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of a Ayotte Sent: Wednesday, December 09, 2009 7:48 AM Subject: Re: ( ) Meds revisited... My son started Risperidone last May.. we moved to this med to get rid of Zyprexa which I felt was just not working for him, it seemed somedays that he just wasnt there.. he was lost in the medication. Anyway.. the Risperidone is wonderful (for us).. we actually decreased his dosage by almost half of the Zyprexa (which was gone 2 weeks after he started) and were able to decrease his Vyvanse by 10 milligrams also. I had heard many different horror stories about this med just as we started using it but was reassured that the side affects that I was hearing about were seen by patients who were on high doses for long periods of time. DJ has done great! He is on 1.5mg and it really has decreased his irritability and increased his awareness. I would highly suggest trying it and see if it works for you. Prior to taking this I felt that I was losing my son... now I have him back and he is alive again! ----- Original Message ----- From: O'Brien Sent: Tuesday, December 08, 2009 8:27 PM Subject: ( ) Meds revisited... Guest guest
Well, I appreciate your dedication… LOL! Was there any damage at your place? I hope not !!!! Abilify isn’t available in Canada yet So I’ll have to settle for Risperdal for now… but will speak to our DR about Abilify, so she can let me know when it arrives. One thing though… isn’t abilify REALLY expensive?! =) From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Debra Balke Sent: Wednesday, December 09, 2009 1:13 AM Subject: Re: ( ) Meds revisited...
