Can you pick him up and drop him off yourself? That would be my first choice. I never put my son on a bus because I knew that environment (sensory and social) would not be good for him.Sent from my iPhoneOn Mar 9, 2011, at 8:38 PM, Deborah Gustlin <sycamorestudios@...> wrote:

2 hours. And then in the afternoon, school gets out at 2:30pm and he isn't due home until 4:15pm. I can not believe that they feel that almost 4 hours a day on a bus is good for these kids. When I take him to school it is only a 25 minute trip, each way. District transportation says

that they have 4 schools to deliver kids too and pine hill is the last one. So he is essentially picked up first and delivered last. I don't know what other schools are on the route, I was so stunned when she told

the more mad I get. So, my questions are: Do you know anything about busing requirements such as to the max length they can keep a kid on the bus? What if he has to go to the bathroom, or someone acts up or harasses him? I don't think there is anyone else on the bus but the driver and the kids. Is it worth fighting over when they are already paying for Pine Hill? Should I just drop it or fight for it? What would you do?Tomorrow I am going to call and ask them exactly the route and the schools and how many people are on and off the bus and when. Any advice would be grateful. I can, but it takes an hour round trip and then again in the afternoon. The bus is suppose to be for special ed only and is one of those small ones, but I still cant believe they make the kids ride for that long. I just think that nobody has challenged the school district yet. I am so happy that they transferred him, but... Deborah,

This does not sound right. I found this on-line doing a quick search.

B. Duration of Travel and Time on Learning

Authority: The term “school day†is defined in the regulations in 34 CFR §300.11©.Question B-1: If a child with a disability spends a significant amount of time being transported to and from school, as well as to and from another location to receive special education and related services, is the child entitled to receive additional school time to make up for the time lost in transportation?Answer: Neither Part B of the IDEA nor the regulations address the issue of the length of a school day. Determining the length of a school day is a decision left to the SEA. However, the IDEA defines school day as any day, including a partial day, that children are in attendance at school for instructional purposes. Additionally, school day has the same meaning for all children in school, including both those with and

without disabilities. In general, a school day for a child with a disability should not be longer or shorter than a school day for general education students. However, if a child’s IEP Team determines a child needs a shorter or extended school day in order to receive FAPE, then appropriate modifications should be incorporated into the IEP. However, these modifications must be based on the unique needs of the child, as determined by the IEP team, and not solely based on the child’s transportation time.

Here is the link if you want to read more. http://idea.ed.gov/explore/view/p/,root,dynamic,QaCorner,12,

I would request at an IEP meeting that he be provided a bus with a route that will minimize his transportation time to the maximum extent possible. I would request this in writing.

Just some quick thoughts...Good luck! Transportation is covered under 34 CFR 300.34. Hope this helps. :)ne

My son has special transportation to an out of zone school. He has only one other student on the bus and a bus aide. It can be done. I would fight for it. ne

So I'm super tired, but I don't see how this applies? Isn't it saying that you can't cut into a child's school day to transport? That's not happening in this case. It just makes for a very long day for her sonSent from my iPhoneOn Mar 9, 2011, at 10:27 PM, susanne hansen <s_hansen34@...> wrote:

A friend had a similar situation with her son being placed in an out of town

private school which is at least 1/2 hr away without rush hour traffic. She

complained about the amount of time her son spent on the bus. Initially he was

on a bus with other kids and was the last one dropped off so it made a very long

commute to school. When my friend complained the school ended up puting her son

on a small school van to get to/from school. He's the only one on the van

because he's the only one who goes to that school. They still pick him up fairly

early in the morning to avoid rush hour traffic but in the afternoons he can be

home @ 1/2 hr after school ends.

Maddie takes the spec ed bus and it's very good for her. They have a helper and the bus driver has some training on how to deal with her. I don't know what the situation is there, but here it's actually been a lifesaver. It can get exhausting driving back and forth, we did that in Hawaii and the regular bus was a disaster times ten. The bus driver here has been wonderful, it takes more time than normal because of his route, but all I have to do is motion him to get off the bus when she's having a meltdown and he works his magic and she's on the bus.

Re: ( ) busing concerns

Can you pick him up and drop him off yourself? That would be my first choice. I never put my son on a bus because I knew that environment (sensory and social) would not be good for him.

My 12 year old son was transferred to a school just for aspergers because the school district did not have a classroom for him. The school is a private school that costs over $40,000 a year and the district is paying the entire amount. They also included door to door transportation in the IEP. I am thrilled and grateful, but now I need to know if anyone has advice about the busing.

The IEP includes door to door

transport to pine hill, but I found out that they would pick him up at 6:25am and school doesn't start until 8:30am! He would be on the bus for

I don't know what other schools are on the route, I was so stunned when she told

me the times, that I told her I would call back. Now I am just pissed off! The more I think about it,

the more mad I get.

What would you do?

Tomorrow I am going to call and ask them exactly the route and the schools and how many people are on and off the bus and when. Any advice would be grateful.

( ) busing concerns

Maddie takes the spec ed bus and it's very good for her. They have a helper and the bus driver has some training on how to deal with her. I don't know what the situation is there, but here it's actually been a lifesaver. It can get exhausting driving back and forth, we did that in Hawaii and the regular bus was a disaster times ten. The bus driver here has been wonderful, it takes more time than normal because of his route, but all I have to do is motion him to get off the bus when she's having a meltdown and he works his magic and she's on the bus.

In NYC all special needs kids get busing -- with a matron and driver. You can

file medical accommodations to reduce the length of the ride.

Because I live so far from my son's school - there are only three kids on his

bus and he's the last to be picked up and the first to be dropped off. It's

about 90 min in the morning and 60 minutes in the afternoon. Even if I had

medical accommodations on his IEP requiring the shortest trip possible - it

really couldn't be shorter than this due to the distance and city traffic.

I don't get it. Is the child missing school time due to transportation? I think that is illegal. I thought all bussing had to be done before and after school time. I am nto expert in this area, but I would check out s law.com or Disability Rights in your area.

So I'm super tired, but I don't see how this applies? Isn't it saying that you can't cut into a child's school day to transport? That's not happening in this case. It just makes for a very long day for her sonSent from my iPhone

Additionally, school day has the same meaning for all children in school, including both those with

and without disabilities.

:)ne
