Guest guest
You probably will have to hire a behavioral expert to come in and assess her. If you can't redirect her, you will have to discourage it. They can come up with amazing ideas sometimes. Roxanna Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again. ( ) Ripping Hello everyone I work closely with a young lady with ASD, i support her in my place of work. Could anyone give me any suggestions on what i am going to explain. This lady has a compulsion with ripping her clothes, doesnt matter what type of clothing it is she just rips. I have tried buying different materials as regards to sensory issues, that has failed. Buying five or six of the same item even kept a time log, for example to see what time it happens, to see if patterns occur. I would be grateful if there are any ideas out there that can help me, i find this very frustrating from my point of view, as i will not give up until i have found the answer. Guest guest
I am new at all of this myself, so this is just an idea. Is it only her own clothes? Is it ever anything else? They have crafts that you rip fabric into strips for and then braid or sew it back together to make various items (bags, rugs, baskets, pillows, etc.). If she had a craft bag with her with fabric supplies maybe she could redirect the compulsion to that instead of her clothing. Does she have any say in picking out her own clothing? Maybe if she found clothing that she chose and/or personalized in some way (adding beads or special buttons or embroiderey or iron on embellishments - doesn't have to be gaudy just a little touch) she would feel a greater attachment to it and not want to destroy it. Just thoughts. ~ From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Ripping Date: Friday, August 20, 2010, 7:32 AM You probably will have to hire a behavioral expert to come in and assess her. Guest guest
You might be able to hang a piece of fabric on a belt for her to shred and try to limit her to just that piece of fabric - not sure if that would work or not.
