my son used to scream uncontrollably at the sound of hand-driers - very loud and

high pitched. Now he shrieks with delight and loves the feeling of the hot air

coming out of them!

does a lot of that delighted shrieking and always has. I'm not sure if

anything has scared him and later caused delighted shrieking, though.

overcame his fear of water slides last week when we vacationed at a resort with

an indoor water park. I was so happy. He went on the slide a lot after that.

Funny about the marshmallows! Our son likes the mini marshmallows but MUST mash them flat before putting them into his mouth (to get rid of the spongy texture).

My son has a love/hate relationship with a lot of sensory experiences. For

instance, it is very hard to get him started on an activity like fingerpainting,

but after doing it for a while, he will start to rub the paint all over his

body. He can be funny about the vacuum cleaner too - he covers his ears because

he hates the sound, but will also run circles around the machine shrieking and

playing a game. I gather that the combination of sensory avoidance/seeking is

very common, but it is funny to see it happen in stages during the same

activity.

My almost 17 year old son still has issues with the vacuum cleaner. He is

afraid of it... To this day, if I point it at him in his direction, he will jump

out of the way and leave the room. When he was little, I would have him come

help me vacuum, which did help a little, but usually he would freak out over it.

Yes he's Autistic as well, but has adapted as I have, I didn't recognize his

issues as being autistic at all. He was just quirky. But since his little

brother is diagnosed, we see the similarities in them both, except there is no

anger issue with him, as is with his little brother.
