My 8 year old son has always struggled with motor skills. When he was first

evaluated @ 2, they said he was slightly behind, just not enough to qualify for

help. He did get a little help in preschool for fine motor skills and also in

OT when I took him a year or so ago. He seems ok with the fine motor skills,

but it is his major motor skills I am more concerned with. He loves playing

with our little tikes basketball hoop at home, which is about all he can handle

(and honestly, it looks kind of silly). If he plays anything to high, he hates

playing basketball. He can't seem to throw the ball very high at all. Same

with baseball or football. He will start to try to play with other kids, but

can't throw far and is really awkward. He is the same way on the playground.

Very cautious and slow. He has always been that way....never one of those kids

to jump all over the couch. Then, the other day he was trying to copy another

child doing a somersault. I never noticed he couldn't do one. In fact, he

can't even begin to. He is just so awkward, and can't even start in the right

position.

Do other AS kids have these problems? What kind of things can I do to help? My

son also has some vision issues (has to do the patching thing, no depth

perception, etc) which probably do not help. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

my 9 year old son has been the same way. always a little or a lot slower than

the other kids. never really jumping and climbing like the other kids. he

wants to do sports but knows his limitations. i think these developmental delays

are very common with aspie kids. he had poor motor planning. we had to teach

him how to crawl and he didn't walk until 22 months. it is hard because i wish

it didn't matter to him that he isn't as fast as the other kids but it does. a

doctor told me once the difference between autistic and asperger was the

autistic kid won't care what the other kids are doing where the asperger kid

will compare and be upset and anxious. it is so true with my son. well i guess

more p/t and o/t for my boy.

My son has horrible coordination and motor skills for everything but swimming. People are always commenting on his near flawless stroke. It's like he's a penquin wobbling on land, but graceful in the water. We pay big bucks so he can swim year round. His neurologist said that swimming is often a very good "sport fit" for aspie kids.

Hi,

I got my aspie girl enrolled in the Ride Program of the JCC of Longmedow and she got a trike. She is eleven and was embarrassed at the begining, now she loves the bike.

With the help of physical therapy she is doing very well. We have told her that the exercises are for ever and should be done very day like brushing her teeth.

I have been trying to improve posture and balance. She took yoga classes for six weeks and it was a big improvement.

This year Summer camp is going to be the test to check the problem with her motoskills.

So far, after two years of intense mental, physical and occupational therapy, she is coming alone very good.

She have found the world through music and now she is able to communicate more. Still she has the funny talk, but she can sings very nice.

I enrolled her in piano lessons and she is singing at the church chorus.

This has been incredible, things are getting much better...

I have been buying aspergers books for her to read and now she is more relax to know that she is not the only one.

Our occupational therapist years ago had said to keep up

with activities that are bilateral (strenghten both sides

of the body) such as biking and swimming. This improves

coordination, balance,strength and stamina.

There are some very specialized OT therapy for eyes and something

called prism glasses but my daughter was not cooperative and

I don't think this is an evidence based therapy that has

been proven to help.
