Guest guest
My 7 year old boy was recently diagnosed and had been the target of bullies for months. Finally the bullies are leaving him alone (one stopped after I told him to - not really supposed to, but it worked). Unfortunately, my wee man hates school a lot for many reasons - is very resistant about going to school and sometimes seems quite down, but apparently when there, is fine most of the time. He is very sensitive to food chemicals and most outbursts etc are from being " drugged " . If I didn't watch diet carefully (no additives etc), he would be unable to function at all to attend school. I went along to a parents invite to watch the students doing some activities. Teacher asked what kind of community helpers there are. My boy said, " psychiatrist " - teachers wasn't sure how to spell that one. Good news is he now has 2 friends to play with. Miranda
Guest guest
hahahahah--Miranda, this is so funny about psychiatrists!!!! this weekend we were talking about our chihuahua--my husband said something is wrong with that dog! (He is a hoot) and my son came up from behind us and said, well he probably just has Aspergers. I thought I would die laughing! I said what does that mean having aspergers? He said oh it just means we are really smart and do things differently--but the good news is I will be succesful like that cattle lady when I grow up! yay! Guest guest
I tried teaching, but found it horrendously stressful - mainly the politics and too much people contact. I do remember feeling very disillusioned when I asked a reading recovery teacher for assistance with a student that seemed dyslexic - when she found out they were in the lowest streamed class, she said, " not wasting my time, can't fix a cracked pot " . I felt so angry and helpless. I recall a boy in a senior class who got laughed at because of his textbook answers and peculiar way. I didn't know about Aspergers then, but now believe he was. I remember telling the class off for attacking him. Guest guest
Not the best worded note that I've seen. I'm sure that Zack knows how much help he needs. The teacher needs to emphasize the positive aspects of what Zack is doing. Is he much improved since the beginning of school? Has he finally grasped a concept that he was struggling with? If she can't think of anything positive then she should be working with the counselor to see how she can do so. BTW, you shouldn't include her name or contact info in your note. You should see if you can edit it out of your note. > > I have a question for all of you if you dont mind my son greatly struggles in math has not yet been dx with aspergers but instead with adhd, his self esteem is very low and I feel that teachers is not making it any better These are some of the things she tells my son(well one ofthem other things like it. if you could read this and tell me what you think > > Zack, > With much support, use of a calculator, and 1:1 step-by-step instruction as how to do the concepts on the test you did receive 23.5 out of 30. Guest guest
I was looking at it more from a documentation angle so I didn't read it like that at first, but I can see what you're talking about. I would clarify with the teacher why she felt the need to add that detail. It sounds like she laid out the facts about supports he needed for the test and then gave his score, which was a 78. Are you concerned with the amount of support he needs to be successful or something else? Are those supports already included in his IEP? Guest guest
Hi , I was wondering if your son has an IEP? Or if the subject of getting your son some support and help has come up?This, to me, sounds like she is trying to praise him, but is getting a paper trail. What I mean is that it sounds like she may be trying to gather proof that your son needs help....and that WITH the help, he can succeed. Of course, you know her and your son. I'm wondering about the part of him actually being in school. Was he NOT going to be there? If you have been talking with teachers about getting help for him, the teacher may be actually helping by documenting what he used to succeed. Hope I understood your email correctly.Hugs. Guest guest
I don't see anything wrong with it. They are just using CYA techniques to show that they did use the prescribed accommodations. Guest guest
I agree that the overall tone of this is discouraging and not particularly supportive. Instead of complimenting him on his good score, and making him feel good about the result of his hard work, the emphasis of the message that he only got the result " with much support " , calculator, etc. ly, it seems sort of passive aggressive, as if the teacher is mad that he got that support but has to grudgingly admit he got a decent result. I think it'd be appropriate to talk to the teacher about: - whether she thinks your son should or should not have that support - does she have a problem with him using a calculator, getting 1 on 1 step by step instructions, etc We spent half a year with a teacher who really undermined and resisted the support my daughter needed. I wish that as soon as I saw it, I got the principal involved to make sure the teacher knew I wasn't going to tolerate that, AND that the principal knew what was going on. So maybe because of my experience and what I wish I'd done in retrospect, I think that if I were in your shoes now I'd ask for a meeting with the teacher AND the head of school to talk about this message, and raise the questions with the teacher. Does the teacher have a problem with providing extra support to your son? Does she think that he is not really earning his grade? If she's supportive, then why raise those things in that comment to him? If your son is entitled to support, and the message you get is that the teacher is NOT happy about providing it, then I think that's something you need to bring up right away.
