Guest guest
My son is very proficient in computers, has CRAPPY handwriting. So we now have it in his official record that he IS to be allowed to use a computer for EVERYTHING. All his homework is done on computer. He has permission to use his cell phone as a task manager. Recently he had a homework assignment which involved a map of Latin America. He was to label each country and its capitol, then color it in. For some reason, he developed a horrendous mental block about that particular assignment. So in the future, we will scan the map into the computer, and he can edit it, label things, etc. on the computer. We aren't looking for ways for him to get out of doing his homework, just ways to make sure he DOES do his homework. I'm suspecting that Isaac will be one of the first kids at school to take a laptop to school with him, although that isn't yet necessary. Fortunately my husband is a programmer and we have just about every piece of hardware or software that Isaac could possibly need! Guest guest
it depends on what type problems your son has. I have an IEP for my son both Aspie and ADHD. One of the huge things we have is short home work assignments, extra time to turn in school project like up to 2-3 days to turn them in. I have had little help with social skills in school but I suppose it would depend on how old your child is. I also email teachers weekly to see if my son has missing assignments even in 10th grade I learned to never assume each teacher he has knows he has an IEP and what is in it. This past year one teacher did not know till almost Christmas so I learned now to tell each one. I also have sent web sites to teachers, and often will have to explain his rude comments which are not really rude but black and white answers. It also helps to have an extra set of books at home which can be placed in his IEP. It also has helped my son know what the classroom rules where on paper where he can refer to them when needed. If hand writing seems to be a problem you can request a word processer. Theresa StoopsCoordinator OfFlorida F.A.S.D. Guest guest
My son is ADHD and Aspie too. He is 15. He does have a support teacher help him to stay organized (bookbag is atrocious). He also used to use a DANA (data entry keyboard) since his handwriting is horrible, but he now uses a netbook instead. He types fast so taking notes this way helps him.Sent via DROID on Verizon Wireless ( ) Help with IEP meeting I have a meeting in a few weeks and would love to hear what kinds of modifications your Aspie kids get in school? Guest guest
Mostly behavioral but he does have trouble with a lot of writing. It's gotten better but sometimes he just quits when it's too much like in evals. He is in 1st grade right now. > > Is your son having any academic concerns or is behavior a problem or both? > > > ( ) Help with IEP meeting > > > > I have a meeting in a few weeks and would love to hear > what kinds of modifications your Aspie kids get in school? > I am trying to get an expert in the spectrum to come with me > but I want to make sure I have thought of everything before > the mtg so I can come in as prepared as possible! > > My son also has ADHD. > > Thanks in advance. > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG - www.avg.com > Version: 8.5.449 / Virus Database: 271.1.1/3532 - Release Date: 03/26/11 21:15:00 >
Guest guest
Okay - my son, also first grade, primarily behavior/social problems and writing. Besides the fact that writing is a totally unpreferred task and would often refuse to do it, when he does do it he doesn't put spaces inbetween letters, uses a mixture of uppercase and lowercase and letters float all over, above and below lines etc. It was questionable whether or not he needed pull out service to work on this - a lot of kids are still mastering this skill, he could improve on his own by next year - but they knew he could benefit simply as time to get out of the classroom, in a quiet room, working in a smaller group. So for this he got 30 minutes, 5 days a week. He also got 30 minutes 1x a week with OT to help with calming techniques and "how does your engine run" sort of thing. 30 minutes 1x a week with SLP to work with social stories and to recognize emotions and facial expressions. The classroom got a part time aide with special attention to be given to my son during recess and lunch.... but that didn't work out too well for us ... long story, I've posted about it before.... it's the reason we pulled my son out of school and are now homeschooling. The homeschool district still provides services and we just completed our 30 day review for the new IEP team at the homeschool district. He now gets 1 hour 2x a month for writing (they will also slowly incorporate some typing - at home we are starting to play with an online typing program called Dance Mat on the BBC website) 1 hour 1x a month with an O.T. but she actually work with fine motor skills and proper letter formations. (Learning without tears program) 1 hour a week with SLP for social skills. I hope this helps - let me know if I can more to help! Good luck!
